Hey guys, just have to point out that you got the Soma thing wrong. You were just talking about people relying too much on meaningless metaphor, and then did it. I still take the general point, people free associate meaning into far too many things. But the real drug Soma that exists is not an antidepressant that is meant to make people compliant. It's a muscle relaxer. It does have some slightly euphoric effects, if you can stay awake through the powerful sedation it brings. It's really just used for muscle relaxing purposes though, and wasn't named for Soma from A Brave New World. The name shares a root with "somatic," roughly meaning "of the body," probably because it relaxes the fuck out of your body. Soma from the book also didn't make people sleepy, it was much more like something like a blend of ketamine and MDMA that didn't cause erectile dysfunction. It tended to be used during orgies and seemed energizing and relaxing like MDMA, but also seemed to have a dissociative quality to it, like ketamine. Soma from the book is probably named for the mythical drug Soma from a religious tradition that I don't quite recall, that lots of wackadoos in the psychedelic community like to think was probably fly agaric mushrooms and may have been responsible for giving rise to consciousness, according to Terence McKenna. There's a lot of woo there

I contract for Comcast, engineering their infrastructure. Knowing them they probably left some kind of filter on the line or they built out to another customer off of the same line that feeds you and forgot to check that your signal still worked after splitting off. If you ever feel useless, just remember there is someone out there, working tirelessly to get every little detail right, just so corporate can go choke their chicken and not send a god damned lineman out. Also, you want to talk dystopia? In what world does such an entity as Comcast, reviled inside and out, get to keep making money?
