As a rape survivor myself, this was an incredible episode. Tom and Cecil hit all the right notes. Tom said: "Why should the women stay home to 'stay safe', keep the men at home to keep women safe". Cecil said: "We shouldn't be telling women how not to get raped, but men not to rape women." This really struck me as exactly the right words, said at the right time, and need to be echoed far and wide. Thank you for this. Also: "Blond-coiffed dummy" is my new favourite phrase for Trump.

The recent shooting was an absolute tragedy, and the reasons that the shooter had are very difficult to pick apart. The thing that I find frustrating is that so many people are rushing to call this hate against Asians. While it's true that instances of hate against Asians over the last year have certainly risen, I don't think that is the case this time. I believe that the shooter chose his targets because they were sex workers, not because they were Asian. Of course this then brings the issue of women being trafficked for sex work and we need to have a conversation about that, but we don't need to label this as a hate crime against people of Asian descent. This is violence against women and that needs to be addressed as well.

I’m listening to you lose your minds about men causing most of the violence right now. Saying we need to tell our men to not rape, etc... We do tell them not to rape Tom. Some people are just fucked up. And while I understand your broader point of needing to improve? It’s so goofy to me how confused you seem as to why most violence is perpetrated by men. You have pointed out biology countless times over the years. And the differences between men and women. Men are biologically built for violence, warfare, and combat. Man, as a species? Is just another animal. The world is violent. Don’t delude yourselves into thinking that the laws of the land are not, as they have always been, kill or be killed. While we are certainly fortunate enough to live in a time and place where violence is at an all time low? Violence is always going to be just around the corner. And you need to prepare for violence, and have a plan. Man, is physically built to be able to fight, and to inflict violence upon those who would come to take what is his, harm his loved ones, and to protect his clan. Violence is a reality of life. Pretending otherwise is dangerous. We are wired and built in order to inflict violence upon other human beings. And while most of us understand that we are now fortunate enough that having to become violent is more rare than throughout our history? It still happens. But men were the ones built for the hard work and violence. Not women. Does that mean women can’t do hard work or become violent? Of course not. And I would hope everyone reading this would understand that is not what I’m saying. I guess I’m just confused as to why a couple of guys with such a solid grip on reality, seem to be so shocked at the fact that the stronger, more aggressively programmed sex out of two options? Is the one that is overwhelmingly more violent. Can the world improve? Always... But what is it that we aren’t doing exactly that you feel will have some massive impact on billions of years of Earthly biology?

The single greatest human ability is to grow beyond our own animalistic biology. In fact, society and civilisation itself is a manifestation of that growth at a speed that outpaces the messiness of biological evolution by several orders of magnitude. To write off violence against women as the mere result of being biologically hairless monkey-men is wholly reductionist and ignores large swaths of civilised human experience, from foregoing hunting and gathering in lieu of agriculture to wholly anti-survival pursuits such as art and music. Violence against women is a huge problem in western culture and beyond. A large part of that is the result of a civilisation that does not adequately address it... and even some aspects of society that actively reinforces it. That is what is referred to when people talk about "rape culture": The objectification of women and trivialisation of violence against women that makes rape and other violence against women far too common. I have been raped. Although I was technically the victim of a grave crime, the culture I grew up in was systematically built to make me feel dirty for being a victim. Being a rape victim became my "dirty secret" because society said that I was the one to blame for my own violation. I must have said the wrong thing. I must have worn the wrong thing. I must have 'led him on'. I shouldn't have been where I was. I was 15. What Tom and Cecil were referring to was addressing these shortcomings at a sociological level, not a biological one, because we ARE capable of doing better.

Thank you Niamh! Your attempt at trying to explain to a filthy monkey man who apparently has a missing link in his own evolution was accurate and eloquent, although I fear it won’t hit its mark. This guy seems to be perfectly okay with his own flawed evolutionary shortcomings in emotional and sociological intelligence as well as those of other males who aren’t willing or able to stop falling victim to their base Neanderthalic instincts. I’ve listened to this particular episode three times now, and each time my initial thought only grew stronger, that thought being that Tom should be brought to testify in front of Congress to his astute observations that male dominated violence is in fact THE critical common denominator of violent crime, and it’s been right in front of us all this time, staring us arrogantly in the face, as it continues to be blatantly ignored by the ruling misogynistic patriarchy, and trivialized by the citizenry!

There was nothing nuanced about it. It's the same "boys will be boys" rhetoric that's been used by rape apologists for time immemorial, with this version simply wrapped in an inane primary school biology lesson. It has the intellectual depth of a saucer. The unstated "quiet part" of his whole screed was because male violence is inevitable and biological, they aren't really responsible for their actions.... not really. The logical extension of this is that if violence is inevitable and biologically motivated, then it is solely the responsibility of women to prevent being raped and abused. The failure of that prevention is therefore the fault of the victim. The nuance, if there is one, is that men biologically can't control themselves. From my point of view, this is as damaging to men as it is to women. However, this is based on a false premise. There are societies where rape and violence against women is nearly unheard of, such as some subcultures in Indonesia, that was accomplished through strictly societal constructs of mutual respect and elimination of toxic masculinity. There is no reason why these successes can't be duplicated in Western culture.

Hi Folks - Cecil here. I just want to point out that there are two negative reactions to this episode where Tom and I talk about male violence. Not all men and Boys will be boys. Both of these comments admit that this is an actual problem, neither of these dispute the issue. Instead they diffuse the blame and responsibility. We should be better, teach people better, recognize this as in issue and work towards solutions. Not just shrug our shoulders and say oh well. We plan on reading some of these negative comments and responding to them at the end of the next episode so listen in if you want a full response to your message.

I think you missed the point. My entire post really could have just been summed up as, “Why are you confused as to why men commit most of the violence?” I do regret the kill or be killed thing. Because that isn’t exactly what I meant. Admittedly that was a horrible example. I simply meant that there are a lot of predators out there. I agree with everything Tom and Cecil said. I was just confused as to why they seemed so surprised? I’m not a misogynist, red-neck, douchebag, sister nor gun humper. I lost my job last February, and I do get lazy with the shaving since COVID. So, I will give you neck-beard. I did not ever say anything about their broader points being incorrect. I’m confused as to why you feel what I said is misogynistic? I’m sincerely asking you. Because that wasn’t my intention at all. And to sit here and say I should be banned for simply commenting on a topic? On a podcast I’ve supported for years? That’s pretty fucked up. Especially given you don’t seem to understand what I am saying. I found CogDis when I was homeless. They put a smile on my face and cracked me up when I had nothing. (I’ve literally spit water out my nose in line at a bank as everyone surely assumed I was listening to music, and thought I was a crazy person after that) And when I started to do well and got back on my feet? I wanted to return the favor and show some love and support for what they do. And that is exactly what I have done for roughly five or six years now. So maybe chill out on the banning people talk. Because you clearly don’t understand me at all. And I don’t need to be banned because of someones misunderstanding. I just heard Tom and Cecil reply to this on the new show and it cleared some things up. And, it also showed me that I was misunderstood on a few points. Sometimes, what we see in the written word, especially by people we do not know, can be easily misconstrued. I’m writing a reply to what I heard on the show that I’ll put up later. I only just now saw any of these comments. Maybe don’t be so quick to judge people.

Ah... Niamh, I see what happened here. When I was talking about biology? I was not referring to sexuality or anything having to do with sex. Please re-read my post only thinking about why men are more violent. I had nothing regarding sex even cross my mind when writing that. It was all just about not understanding why the guys seemed so confused as to why men were the more violent sex. That’s all. I can see how you got there now though.
