Oregon! All vote by mail. I vote while I’m sitting on the shitter.

Tangential to the marriage law discussion, I think church/canon law should be taken as legally seriously in a secular court as Mum took the 'No Gurlz Allowed' sign on my cubby house when it was time to pack me and my brothers off to bed.

Why should marriage require an officiant at all? Officiants are religious leaders. When I got married, we used a Pennsylvania license that only required our signatures (and two witnesses) - much like any other contract.

Emma Crawford

I'm a secular officiant in Arizona, and when I had the honour to marry my friend and her partner of several years, I ended with "I now pronounce you married as fuck" :) It was great <3

Naomi Meyer

I’m currently single, but I’d find someone random to get hitched with for Tom to be my officiant.

In Australia we have mandatory voting once you turn 18, all elections on a Saturday, a load of options to vote ahead of the election, and a sausage sizzle at a lot of polling places. We still appear to regularly elect a bunch of ****s but at least as many people as possible are allowed a say in the matter.

Diego Guzmán

Chile: you turn 18, you can vote. Our voting days are during the weekend (normally just one day). These days commerce is closed, except for aome exceptions. Wtf USA

Eyjafjallajökull The Icelandic volcanoe

I remember writing a paper about suicides for one of my college classes and I used this paper that talks about how British people in the 60s and 70s would use their gas ovens to commit suicide because for some reason there was carbon monoxide present in the gas, the gas companies changed the type of gas they use so that there wasn’t any CO1 in the gas and the rate of suicides dropped significantly. To quote the paper “in 1963 domestic gas accounted for more than 40% of all suicide deaths, by 1975 suicide by domestic gas was all but eliminated.” TLDR; the method used in suicide attempts matter. The US doesn’t have some disproportionate amount of suicide attempts, it just has an insane “success” rate due to the methods that are available to Americans https://www.jstor.org/stable/1147403?seq=1

Fix the Vote

Cecil, the "give 'em unions" argument is theirs and they use it to delegitimize non-traditional unions. The legal wrangling it would take to make "union" 100% equivalent to "marriage" would no doubt leave many people screwed. It's an impossible goal that makes logical sense and so it's an easy way for them to say "I want the gov out of marriage, but since it won't be I want it to be sacred". (Also Hollywood Upstairs Universal Life Church is an easy start to officiating)

Laughton Melmop

I’m a ordained minister in the Church of Dudeism. The church has certified me as a person of good standing, which means I can officiate weddings in about 40 states. Sadly, I live in the uk - but we hope to visit NYC when we are able to, so if anyone wants to get married, I’ll happily officiate...and abide.

Cognitive Dissonance Podcast

Maybe I wasn't clear. I'm not saying give them unions. I'm saying give everyone unions and take the idea of marriage out of government. You can get married - but it doesn't mean anything. Everyone has to get a union through the government. All old marriages confer a union. This way they can't use the "you can't get married here!" bullshit because it won't matter anymore.
