Is this the magpie video Cecil was talking about? https://youtu.be/YGGTcYfrEZU

I'm not a tall man, but I am a disaster

You may consider that admitting how much taxes you pay on patreon may turn off international patrons who don't wish to contribute to the US war industry.

Is the Tyler that was inspired to start his own podcast Tyler of Tuckered Out, a Knowledge Fight type show that fact corrects Cucker Tarlson. If so, you guys should have them on your show. Growing audience, and doing a good job already with a limited amount of shows under their belt.

I was born and raised in West Virginia, it may suck but at least we have good pizza.

As someone who both inherited enough money to start seeing how money makes money and someone who would move modified viruses around Boston while doing cancer research, we should chat

Niamh Coghlan

I'm sorry James, but if you didn't think that Tom and Cecil paid taxes based on the income we provided them, then you are incredibly naive. Second, if you think you can exist in a modern society and never have any of the money you spend land in the US government's coffers, you are mad. I have absolutely no illusions that some of the money I spend in our global economy goes not only to other EU nations, but to America and Asia as well. Third, the implied threat that you (or others) would or should pull support from Tom and Cecil simply because they pay taxes is beyond petty.

I work in medical records. I'm one of maybe three professions that still uses a fax machine.

Super stoked for the Friday streams! Streams start at 11pm here so I'm glad I can actually stay up for them

Londyn

I can relate! Worked in a medical office and then just more offices who refuse to let go of faxing

Ryan Parker

He’s not from here. He may not be as readily familiar with our system. Cut him a little slack. He’s not necessarily wrong. I actually admire that he cares enough to think that much about it. However, I do agree with you on that we shouldn’t punish Tom and Cecil simply for doing what they are legally required to do.

Ryan Parker

What makes you think that the mob isn’t heavily involved in online gambling? They didn’t get where they are and survive this long by failing to adapt. 😉

Cecil mentioned his dad gambling with pinball. That's correct. Pinball was considered gambling in its first incarnations, and many towns still have laws on their books banning pinball to this day. To get around state and federal gambling laws, pinball makers added the innovation of...flippers. That's right. Originally pinball was just the player launching the ball and watching points rack up (like Pachinko- which was inspired by the early incarnations of pinball and Japan's enormous surplus of ball bearings after WWII). In the eyes of state and federal law, flippers transformed pinball from a game of chance into a game of skill so it was as legal as any carnival game- except in towns that explicitly banned "pinball".

Wow. That seemed to escalate unnecessarily. I’m in the US, and a ginormous fan of Tom & Cecil, and upon reading Dr. Devine’s comment, my first thought was, “Hm, that could be a valid point.” That was my first thought because, even as an American, and in Texas at that 👎🏻, I don’t want to contribute to the US war industry! I absolutely hate that I do, through any such irresponsible use of my portion of the federal government’s tax collections via any means of money exchanging. I honestly cannot begin to give adequate emphasis to just how much I hate it, but perhaps the following analogy will offer a slight understanding of the depths of my war-hatred: I hate to contribute to the American Military Industrial Complex in any way whatsoever, including through the taxation of my earned compensation, as well as the secondary taxation of those earnings, which I’ve chosen to gift to others, with the same white-hot, enraged intensity as felt by Republicans who don’t want their tax dollars going toward the feeding and healthcare for children in poverty, nor toward any hypothetical concept of being used to fund abortions for poverty stricken women in no financial position to care for a child. THAT much! So I totally get it. If only we had a tax system in place which allowed us to directly assign allocations of our tax contributions to the Fed which would in turn require the Fed to issue quarterly financial statements to taxpayers in order to verify and validate the allocations of tax receipts …. But I digress. Sorry …. Sometimes I allow myself a moment or two of wistful idealism, wasteful as I know it to be. Also, at no time did I perceive any implied threat, nor any implied encouragement, to cease support of CD.

Chad from Cincinnati

I’m only 32, but I remember being 8 or 10 recording songs from the radio right before cassettes went out of fashion and CD’s really hit it off.

Niamh Coghlan

Cheryl -- The reason why tax systems don't work that way was well explained by you a mere two paragraphs before you said you wished it did. A fiscal policy built upon a foundation of the tragedy of the commons is doomed to failure and chaos.

Cheryl

I do understand that, Niamh. And I understand that in my version of a direct taxpayer allocation system, I did not account for those Americans who don’t possess the same kind of heart that I do, and wouldn’t be willing to allocate their taxes to altruistic services. Sigh ….As I said, my wistful idealism sometimes runs wild and overtakes my cynical realism …. “You’ll always be disappointed if you expect people to act as you do. Not everyone has the same heart as you do.” -Unknown
