I would offer a modification to your 'Yelling fire in a theater' thing. This is more like the theater being on fire, but with some of the theater goers not only denying the fire exists, but also restraining and gagging the people shouting about it. On top of that also blaming the clearly obvious fire on the people they are restraining and gagging. AND shoving people into the fire while denying it's existence too.

Wow a lot to chew on this week. In terms of scientists doing their thing in terms of interrogating itself, I have 1 small real world example. My younger brother finished off an honors maths degree a few years back. To be clear, that is 3 years at university then a competitive to get into 4th year. I know a little bit of maths, maybe enough to sorta kinda follow along the reasoning if he holds my hand. Anyway. in that last year he had to do a thesis, he chose the Rubik's cube. He had to write a program to solve them and prove various things about it. Like what is the maximum scrambled it can be (18 moves if solved as efficiently as possible). Or how many moves his program would make at a maximum. He got it down to 24 I think, No one has ever written one to get down to 18 reliably and provably btw. That might have something to do with the 43 quintillion (43 x 10^18) odd possible combinations. So not particularly important or even original research, but tricky enough! I went along with him when he had to defend his thesis. It was ferocious. He gave a 30 minute presentation to go along with a 2 week before submitted paper of maybe 100 pages. And about 30 minutes of questions after that. And believe you me they were detailed. Not scornful, not rude, but any gaps in reasoning or what have you were deeply interrogated. Him and 4 panelists at a whiteboard doing some seriously (to me) arcane stuff. For a freaking kids toy. It was instructive to me as a bystander to actually watch peer review in action. Highly recommended if you ever get the chance to do something like it. Sorry for the long post, but yeah, Go Carl Sagan and go the actual nitty gritty of the scientific method in action! Oh, and bro got 1st class honors, one of 2 out of 8 people examined that day...

Y'all gotta think about collecting the Sagan book club segments. Like a "Reading Sagan During Rona" or some such. It's phenomenal stuff

Here’s what’s nuts about christian anti-vaccine insanity —- if heaven is their predominate aspiration and ultimate destination, why the hell are they worried about the potential fatalism of the Covid vaccine?!? If they get the vaccine and it kills them, then they will just be at the right hand of their skydaddy that much faster. If it doesn’t kill them, they will be safer from Covid and/or could simple become better humans after their DNA is altered. It should not be a difficult decision because it’s a win-win, either way. So what’s their fucking problem? Incidentally, that scenario is a win-win for the rest of us, too. Whether they die, stem the contagion, or become better humans, we all benefit in some way! ☺️

Yeah, sometimes I get the same feeling. Even so, normally I just can't avoid thinking about misguided people that are affected. Sometimes they are just well meaning and/or ignorant people that haven't acquired the skills and knowledge to understand the world through a skeptical or scientific lens. And being able to "google", with a critical thinking take on the search results, is a skill that it may not be that easy to acquire or develop. Also, I have to remind myself that, even without taking herd immunity on account, these people sometimes have children, and those children have to suffer the consequences of their parents' actions.

I'm pretty sure the "ghost medium" with a heavy Italian accent was featured as one on Nathan for You during the Ghost Real Estate agent episode. The episode is actually hilarious and does the right things in highlighting the relative ridiculousness of the ghost industry. All should give it a watch of you want some levity during the Big Depresh.

Any links to where the evangelical was saying they are like isis or al qaeda??
