Athletes have been sold as "heros" in so many ways for almost 100 years, it's been an insane marketing campaign.

Family has to come first Tom. I hope Haley (not sure of spelling, sorry) gets well soon. I'm sorry your family is going through all this. Love, Dan. Liverpool, UK.

Tom, please look after your family. Of course and always and best of luck to Haley (sp?) too. I still think that Carl got it wrong with his NOMA stance. But there is a certain amount of merit to picking your battles and your venue too. Whilst I take slight issue with your take on the first, I take no issue with the second. So, well, this aint either I agree. I do have a major problem with your stance on the performers at Astro World. I write a blog that I freely admit no one reads, well 3 people as I write this have, but there I laid out some mathematics about the amount of COVID deaths as a direct result of having this concert at all. Whilst I am not an expert I tried to be as generous as I could with my assumptions to the anti-vax side of things. Still I came up with 52 dead and 263 people severely and long term injured. At least, inevitably, and at the low end. That this event happened at all is literally murderous in my opinion and I would open the moral culpability bidding at 26,250 counts of attempted murder. By my figures and assumptions. Legally, no idea. 10 (now) deaths and I don't know how many injured from crushing is awful and should be mourned. But calculated and known same should be punished harshly with said punishment landing on anyone who could have impeded this but chose to benefit instead. Very much including the performers. Here's the maths: 50,000 attendees. Assume a 50% vaccination rate plus 5% of the vaccinated also being vulnerable. It was 53% in Texas 4 days after this so fairly close. 26,250 people. 10% either already had it or contracted it there, a low estimate. 2625 people. These people are almost all young, so we'll say the death rate is only 2%. Another low estimate, 52 people dead rounding down. Number 53? You are 50/50 one way or the other. Oh, plus another 10% with long COVID. Long term organ damage, that sort of thing. 262 people. 263 is another 50/50.

I've been here in the Albuquerque area and they held the Balloon Fiesta because of course they did. There were at least 750k guests counted at the event (how many of those unique people I don't know) but for the last month the local news has been all "wow our covid numbers are mysteriously higher than they have been". Oh please give me a guess as to why? So people likely died because of the festival and I am guessing everyone is fine in the name of economy or normalcy. Meanwhile everyone has gone home and we are in one of the poorer states in the country with eight open ICU beds. Luckily one of the higher vaccination rates in the US but still. Argh.

I want Cecil to do a citation needed episode on Attack on Titan in the same way as Heath when he did Atlas Shrugged.

I want to state that I am not clinical. I am however a Certified Medical Biller and I hope for universal healthcare every day. A single payer system and national healthcare is more than just cutting out insurance or appointments and waiting rooms. This would allow for physicians and healthcare providers to have access to other specialists across the country, your health records would be under one system and the care you need would be attainable without sending people on their own dime to another fucking time-zone, taking time off work and risking losing the insurance that comes with that work for nothing. This is bigger than inconvenience and I get so mad at people that spout off about how Universal Health Care is evil and pointless like they know what it means to lose your parent to a cancer that went too long before being diagnosed because the only coverage they had was through the VA, then seeing that parent waste away and die a month before they would have qualified for Medicare and been able to see a specialist in time for them to survive more than a bullshit war in Vietnam...
