Tankard

Christ. Sagan's editor should have cut this book 4 chapters ago. It started strong, but has quickly devoled into rambling Boomer screed.

Oh Carl! I love this chapter but I fear he over estimates us all. Open, curious, and imaginative inquiry is a wonderful thing of course. But, again but, I wonder that he didn't see the horror of it's weaponization into propaganda. There may not be stupid questions. There are questions asked in bad faith and designed only to spread doubt. And by this I mean questions about which there may have been doubt once but not any more. 'Experimental' vaccines. Climate science. 78 god damn court cases looking exhaustively into electoral fraud, not a one of which sways a Trumpkin who refuses to have their 'question' answered because they don't like the answer. When the questions have been asked, have been answered and can and will be eagerly explained in detail and from all angles by experts. While a respected in society response to that and after all of that can still be 'Well, I dunno...'. Then, well, there are many unkind adjectives that can and should be used about, oh lets say every 2nd question I see posed on my FB page. Manipulative, fear inducing, mistrust peddling, double speak stigmata nonsense perhaps. I wish all questions were in fact asked with the kind of naive wonder Carl describes seeing in kindergarteners. I, too, wish those sort were more encouraged. But they aint and it makes me sad.

I don’t know which book you’re reading but this might be the best chapter yet. I don’t know what content you’re looking for but I’ve listen to this chapter three times now and I pick up new information each time. Ask the questions, or perhaps write your own book that’s better
