I fucking loved the book club. My degrees are in English lit and creative writing. Tom, you have a sonorous and perfect reading voice. Please keep doing the book club!

Tracy & her cats

I appreciated the chapter recaps. I have trouble concentrating nowadays and felt guilty that I didn't read it. I was able to enjoy the content that way.

Jabbles

Loved the book club. I would even like to spend more time on the book club segment. Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations for the next book.

Bob Cobourn

I'm concerned about the legality of Tom reading the book for us Patrons. I'd hate to see it come back on him in a negative way. I'd suggest to play it safe and just link to the work being discussed.

Asymetra

I love it. I think we (and by we, I mean you) should do the SGU's book. ;)

Jabbles

I was wondering about that. Nice to hear the boys did at least try to get permission.

Jabbles

Please pick something that has an audiobook version.

Cory Schoelzel

I will relisten to Tom reading demon haunted world before I ever think about reading it myself. I have a playlist of a couple better chapters that I will subject my family to in the car.

CarrieBoo

I loooooved listening to Tom read. He's got a magical voice. And he should definitely read us your book next.

Lucky McChancey

I loved this! I'd never read Demon Haunted World before and although I bought my own copy, I still listened to Tom read it. Like Bob mentioned before me, I'm concerned about the legality of reading the book for patrons. Maybe the next book could be something that's either public domain (I'm actually not sure if The Demon Haunted World is public domain) or available as an audiobook.

Michael

Thanks Tom and Cecil for doing this book club. I really enjoyed listening to Tom read the book, and love your discussions on the main show. Can't wait for the next one! (sorry no recommendations)

That Julia Person

I love it! And I really appreciate Tom reading the chapters for patrons. I'm looking forward to more of this type of analysis in the future. Thank you, guys.

It is definitely worthwhile picking another book, I enjoyed the one just completed. I had already read DHW years ago so it was a good refresh. Whether I would have the time to read a different book along with you is another matter but I'm sure I would get something out of your conversations about the book regardless. I'll read the other comments and maybe make a recommendation. Cheers!

Asymetra

It is a fantastic book, but it's also a "rival" podcast. Plus, their tech guy doesn't have any problems ... with the podcasters. :)

badgertide

Thank you so much for doing this. I read along and greatly enjoyed this book. I appreciate the breakdown after each chapter. It gives me a chance to digest the chapter before hearing an outside take on the text. It made me realize that I am probably a lot less critical than I think I am. As for the next book, I would second reading Manufacturing Consent by Herman/Chomsky. Or The Wretched Of the Earth by Frantz Fanon if you want to read about civil rights and anti-colonialism.

I vote for doing more modern books. On the one hand, Tom can't read them. Okay, that's what libraries are for. On the other hand, you might actually be able to talk to the author afterwards, which would be amazing. My votes are for either Boys Will Be Boys: Power, Patriarchy and the Toxic Bonds of Mateship by Clementine Ford; or Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma Oluo. Both cover toxic masculinity, but the latter also covers race and other points of privilege. I really think the next book should be something sociological.

Let’s do fun! The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. This book made me an atheist at 12!

Ray A Croc was the founder of McDonald's. Ray Comfort is from New Zealand.

I like how Alison and Dana have been doing the MSW book club. They don't read the book aloud for the show, they just do a recap and discussion of whatever chapters they covered that week. Basically, just the part you've been putting in the main show, but it works

The Beautiful Thumb

I loved the fuck out of the Book Club, and I enjoyed Tom's reading, but it isn't a requirement. I can find audio books for myself, or read the book. The discussion was the real gem and I got into listening to that. I have a long list of books I would enjoy hearing you discuss, some of which I have sent in email previously. Nonfiction is great, but I'd enjoy fiction as well, especially drawn from my favorite genre of classic SF.

Hemant Mehta is already reading the bible on youtube chapter by chapter. Currently on Leviticus

The Jungle is in the public domain.

Here’s the Goodreads list of public domain books. https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/public-domain

You mentioned more recent books about critical thinking. Here's one I liked The Scout Mindset, by Julia Galef https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/42041926-the-scout-mindset

Robbi Prior

I have no preference for which book, but i would prefer one Tom can read rather than one he cannot.

Brian [I'll add something witty when the amount of caffine in my system reaches critical mass]

I second Illumi-Llama. "Knowing What is Real in a World Increasingly Full of Fake" by SGU is a great book. There is an audio version already so there won't be a read aloud component but it's a good primer on modern day critical thinking. The rogues have promoted it as a Demon Haunted World for the 21st century. Other (recent) books that have given me a lot to think about are "How to Talk to a Science Denier" by Lee McIntyre and "The Rightous Mind" by Jonathan Haidt

I want Tom to read it.

Matt in L.A.

When y'all mentioned "White Fragility", it hit like a lightning bolt. As a middle-aged white man, that is the subject I most want explored and torn apart. I know that means the loss of hearing Tom read the book, :( bummer but I am willing to accept that, in order to hear this book.

Matt in L.A.

Note that the current audiobook version is horrible, sounds like a robot. Maybe they would enjoy a white-male voice-refresher? Maybe Tom should be the authoritative voice of 'White Fragility'?

Matt in L.A.

I mean, it's worth checking. All corporations stick with their status quo, unless challenged. Maybe it's worth challenging the weaksauce voice-over that now propels "White Fragility". Perhaps your heresy can actually be a business opportunity?

Matt in L.A.

Seriously, the further I listen, the more obvious it is that Tom should be reading the audiobook version. "White Fragility" is begging to be narrated by white men.

I loved the book club. I work in a library, but I've never been in a book club before. Tom reading DHW is the whole reason I made a Patreon account. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this patron bonus. There are so many books I'd love to hear in the future. "The Family" and "C Street", "The Power Worshippers", anything by David Fitzgerald... the list goes on. Maybe Andrew will give you permission to read "The Founding Myth" if you use it to promote his new book.
