Guys like the LGBTQ "hunter" are the reason "the younger generation" doesn't give me hope for the future. It isn't just a matter of waiting for the Mitch McConnells and Donald Trumps to die off. There are plenty of people just as bad waiting to take over.

FYI as far as I understand it (I could be wrong but here's what I gather) Onlysky is a thing because the old host of places like Hemant Metahs Friendly Atheist got a new CEO or something that says you're not allowed to be mean or negative to religions on their blogging service anymore, so a bunch of atheist blogs went "We can't do that without betraying the entire point of our blogs" and started OnlySky. Basically, if you see Onlysky, think Patheos Friendly Atheist. Also it's adorable that you think your childhood experience is some wild wild west mad Max but everyone after you is kid gloves coddled blankets. Every generation thinks that. As a kid we used to make explosives from sparklers and go spider hunting in the Australian bushland (we'd laugh if a friend got bit by one of the worlds most venemous spiders and put them in a trolley tied to our bikes to get them to the local doctors) and tip over drug addict hovels before we were 10, occasionally needing to fend off the barely conscious drug addicts with our bikes and skateboards as a millennial (thinking back on that I feel bad about them, but as a kid you don't think that they're just people who have had the world crush them) Everyone does dumb shit as kids and you'll always think the next generation is softer than you because you don't see the kids off risking their lives or we'd all stop that. Any idiot stuff we see kids do we stop because adults know better, so pretending kids don't do dangerous stuff now is just precious and naieve. Kids are really good at doing dumb stuff in private. You're looking at the public stuff and thinking that's all that's going on.

If you want to know why so many politicians (mostly Rs) refuse to do anything about gun violence, just look at who gets money from the NRA, who gets their campaign support/votes from the cult-like NRA members, and there's your answer. And afaia, the current knowledge on gun violence and mental illness is that people with mental illnesses are far more likely to end up as VICTIMS (not perpetrators), usually at the hands of police. The recent shooter was possibly mentally ill but we NEED to remember: this is overwhelmingly an issue about ease of access by otherwise SANE people who've been radicalized and whipped into a frenzy. Don't pin that on mental health.

The real reason the NRA banned guns at Trump speech??? I'm currently in a nursing class where the instructor works at the major shock/trauma emergency room closest to NRA HQ. Apparently, most to their accidental shootings COME FROM THE NRA HQ GUN RANGE!!! They are accidentally shooting themselves at the supposed mecca of safe gun ownership!

I’ve got a joke…. And the only way I can explain it? Is with more cowbell!

To the people that say it's too soon to nake this shooting about politics, I say fine. Let's politicize Dandy Hook or Parkland. Has enough time passed since those children were murdered to make it about politics? Fucking asshats.

In their Buck Rogers/Battlestar Galatica discussion, Tom said there was some show from that era with a robot with spinning blades that face forward and a triangular head. The one that jumped into my head was Maximillian from the Black Hole. https://64.media.tumblr.com/3fad9d05d1c3bad5623118195436e653/tumblr_pzcaesHS1Q1ruf44ao1_640.gifv

Hey guys! A couple quick comments. First, Cecil, THANK YOU for that fucking rage. I sometimes feel, especially last week, like I’m the only one whose rage is white hot, and I’m so glad that you brought that same level of authentic rage to your soliloquy (I’d call it a diatribe but I don’t want Noah to sue me). Sincerely, thank you. Also, regarding your discussion about forgiveness. There is absolutely a time and a place to forgive. We wouldn’t be human if we didn’t make mistakes, and that requires us to seek forgiveness from our friends and family. The reason that christian forgiveness is such bullshit is that christians (like that preacher you talked about) aren’t seeking forgiveness from those whom they offended or hurt; they’re seeking forgiveness from their imaginary sky friend. And OF FUCKING COURSE their imaginary sky friend is going to forgive them, because it’s imaginary. They don’t care about those who they wronged, because humans can’t get them into heaven. Anyway, thanks for doing what you do. Love you guys (not in a weird semi-sexy way like Eli). Keep up the good work, you are truly appreciated.

Thanks guys for your comments on the shootings. I work just a half-mile from the Tops shooting in Buffalo and it has really fucked up our community. White folks are quick to point out the shooter drove hours here, but the sentiment exists locally in abundance. I had friends intentionally run over by cars during BLM protests. Last summer I found National Justice Party propaganda outside Walmart a few miles from the Tops labeling Black people “animals” “coming for your families” and calling for a genocide before it was too late. My partner’s disgusting Trumpist uncle told his brother he wished the shooter had used a machine gun. Our region (not the city, but the surrounding burbs and villages) is overrepresented in the number of people arrested for violence on Jan. 6. The knowledge that literally nothing is changing despite voting and canvassing and donating and protesting has me feeling pretty hopeless atm, but your show - the humor mixed with the anger - is helping get me through it. Thanks for all you do, and although I painted a shitty picture of the extreme (100% suburban) minority here, give Buffalo a chance next time you take the show on the road. We’re a fun city filled with wonderful people ($3 million donated to local food pantries in a week!).

Saying that having a pistol for self-defense is a stupid argument? Is the most privileged position I’ve ever heard you present. I live in the middle of Compton, California. Three blocks from where they shot those deputies in the face. You saying that myself or anyone else who lives in a dangerous area should not have the right to defend ourselves against people willing to shoot sheriff deputies and police? That’s BS to me. And completely ignores the reality on the ground. And I get that we need a change. But again, the reality on the ground is very different from what we would like. And guns just aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. So if you want to revisit that a couple generations down the road? Fair enough. But right now? You would only say something like that if you live in a nice, safe neighborhood. And living in the broader Chicago area? Is not the same as living in the more dangerous and gang infested areas of Chicago. I’m not trying to sound like a dick. I love you guys. But I adamantly disagree with you on self-defense not being a reason to have a handgun. And this comes from a guy with almost thirty years of Jiu-Jitsu. So it’s not about not being able to defend myself some other way. But arm bars don’t stop bullets.

Glory hole,!! Been listening for a while, but I'm a tightarse and only pay when I've caught up with the podcast episodes, but hey at least I'm now patron.  On the subject of latch door kids, I was one,  in Dublin, Ireland . I am now 44, and had the best time!!@ Woke up one morning, and our road was completely dug up, from the footpath  (kerb) to the other side to of the street.  Every adult thought oh fuck!!!! Every kid thought YESssssssss!!!! It was there for what seemed like 6 months to us kids, wad actually about a month, as they replaced all the water pipes to the houses.  We almost wiped our an entire generation with the shenanigans that ensued. !! We regularly had rock fights which consisted of us literally gathering rocks churned up by the building works and chucking them at each other, till someone got seriously hurt, then we would hide, cause nothing is scarier than an Irish Mammy who's precious child has been injured, whe they weren't paying attention.  I'll never know how we survived our childhoods, but it was great craic, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.  This barely covers the mad shite used to get up to. Someday when I have another 2 bottles of sauvignon blanc in me, I'll tell you about being cornered by a an angry sheep!! Ciara, pronounced Kira cause, Irish, sure why the feck not!!🤣🤣

Yes, people need the ability to able to defend themselves, and yes, it's a privilege to not need a gun. Let's consider the following: Which is better? a) Needing a gun for self-defense b) Not needing a gun for self-defense The stupidity isn't getting a gun to defend yourself, the stupidity is living in a society that requires the gun for self-defense in the first place. I think we would both prefer to live in a society that doesn't require us to carry guns to protect ourselves from each other. That's a privilege that needs to be more ubiquitous. When wild animals attack people, we don't say, "You deal with it," or "Just don't go outside." or "If you don't like being attacked by wild animals, then move." Society deals with the animals to prevent the attacks so people can interact safely. When those "animals" are human, society throws up its hands and says, "We can't do anything." If a bear was ripping through citizens in an downtown area, and a politician said, "Well, that's your problem, you deal with it," he's be roasted alive. The fucked up privilege is when people who don't and never will suffer from mass/school shootings, i.e. the wealthy, politicians, the elite, etc., tell us "elect me, I'll solve all of society's ills" tells us, "that's your problem." Prior to Columbine, there were an average of 26 school shootings a year, but they were in places were we (white people) expected it, so we did nothing. When us white people became affected, it's a crisis. And we do nothing about it, or more likely, misdiagnose the problem and apply the worst solutions. Only when the affluent are affected the gov't will then step in. "And guns just aren’t going anywhere anytime soon." That's not a reason to not do anything. Every problem we solved was "not going anywhere anytime soon."

Asymetra

The thing about the "the shooter was mentally ill" argument used by people (to dismiss the problem as unsolvable) is that actually mentally ill people are incapable of comprehending the consequences of their action (harming others), while mass shooters who are "not in their right mind" (not your words, but I've heard elsewhere) are actively seeking the consequences, they know what they are doing. They also try to avoid being held responsible for their actions.; that's why many of them either shoot themselves or ensure they die by cop in a "blaze of glory."

Asymetra

lol I grew up riding in the back of trucks on the freeway. I could say, "It didn't harm me." Yeah, one accident would put me on the opposite side of that statement. We did a massive amount of stupid stuff growing up. While we shouldn't swaddle our kids in cotton wool, we should protect them from the avoidable stupid things we did. Not being harmed isn't the same as not harmful.

Asymetra

Will we arm teachers after the first teacher who's private life ends up in the hands of cruel students solves the problem with the state-sanctioned gun?

"Adultery" aka sexual assault: "It involved one person, and there’s been no other, nor any other situation of unbecoming conduct for the last 20 years. " Raping one person, but not 10,000 other women, doesn't make the one rape okay. Rape is not a percentage game. “It’s been 20 years… I guess it doesn’t count for anything." No. No it doesn't.
