[How to add your Besties/Resties subscription to your podcast app and/or Spotify]

We wanted to do something special for our first episode of The Resties on Patreon. So, we took a stroll down memory lane, retrieving the indie games that, over the years, have changed our lives for the better.

Thank you so much for supporting the show and providing us the opportunity to keep the Besties and Resties alive. We hope you enjoy!

I want to hear lots more Chris and Russ unhinged! Stick it to the Man! No more being beholden to big Ads 😂

Cam

I feel sooooo seen by this episode. Peanut butter pickle sandwiches rule!!!

Matthew Vinkler

Ah, I don't know where the fuck they're from.

Stephen Taubner

I love how y’all rebelling against advertising is just getting waaaaaaay more obscure with the references

Jacob Vosper

Jokey song games reminded me of I Made A Game With Zombies In It!

Brian Haworth

Thank you for mentioning Aquaria. I helped beta test the Mac version which was published by Ambrosia Software, who published a number of indie titles in the 90s and early 00s, including the indie series that changed my life and defined my teen gaming years, the space trading/combat sim Escape Velocity and its two sequels. I am still Facebook friends today with many people I met on ASW’s forums.

Chris

Wow, we totally forgot about Escape Velocity. That would be worth revisiting! Thanks for sharing this!

Directional Joy

I absolutely LOVED Everyday Shooter. Thank you so much for the shout out (wish this was more accessible). The PS3 had a troubled trek but it had a number of special indies.

2024-02-19 05:13:18 I hadn't played Plants vs. Zombies in so long. Bought it on Steam and put it 7 hrs last night/today. PopCap really mastered pick up and play.

Kentucky Route Zero is downloadable on the Netflix app. Anyone play it there? How would the experience be on my phone?

Chris

We've played a bit on the phone! It benefits from a slightly larger screen, but if you have an iPad that should be big enough!

Brian Haworth

There is currently a project in progress by the original scenario developer of EV: Override to modernize the engine, support classic community-made mods, and bring the game back to life on current hardware with the new title Cosmic Frontier: Override.

Cam

I like just a regular ol hamburger dill chip. Anything too fancy and the flavors can start to get weird

Alex Russell

Kentucky Route Zero is so special and so amazing. I know it’s gotten a lot of play on the podcast over the years but it really is something anyone who has even mild interest in a narrative game should play. I love to hear y’all talk about it.

Colin Archer

Chris is right about peanut butter sandwiches with pickles as long as they’re dill pickles. I recommend you also try putting some cheddar cheese in there. Curious what you think of this combo.

I immediately subscribed to this patreon, my first one. I thought Christopher Thomas Plante and I shared a moment when he noticed my Lone Wolf & Cub movie recommendation. After this peanut butter/pickle fiasco…..I just don’t know where to go from here. Peanut butter is my favorite food. Pickles are cucumbers dipped in sin. I’ve got some thinking to do….

What's a metroidvania? I'm only familiar with search-action games

Hearing you recount your experiences with Edmund McMillen reminded me of watching my friend create his puzzle fighting game Xross Dreams. It felt like he had been working on that game forever but his idea of mashing together several puzzle games together in a vs style way was very cool. I loved how the "Ryu" type character played like puzzle fighter and the dinosaur played like puzzle bobble and that their respective damage translated to their puzzle pieces. Looking at the whole game it was a love letter to everything we enjoyed as teenagers. Since his release on steam in December 22 he's been updating the game based on feedback. I'm always at awe that he did everything in the game save the music and still supports it to this day.

The new TMNT did well at the box office once you consider it's budget. More than enough to justify another for the studio, and I could not be more excited. Truly fantastic

You guys should do a Resties episode on the best old movies to watch to get into watching older movies. I always want to, but have a hard time getting into them

Matthew Parsons

Sometime in early lockdown, Sam Sifton from NYT Cooking posted a recipe for an open-face sandwich with peanut butter, pickles, sriracha and soy sauce. It sounds awful, tastes fantastic, and reminds me so deeply of the worst time in recent history that I've come to refer to it as the "Sad Sifton"

Jon

Ask me to name my favorite game of all time and I'll tell you it's Towerfall. I didn't know Plante and Russ had a podcast until they appeared on the Vergecast late last year, but I never forgot that they turned me onto my favorite game ten years ago. https://youtu.be/qCopHATjrmM?si=2xtvbesjT5O5BjbX Have you played the six player mode on the Switch version?

Katie Jewel

You guys should do a Resties or a Rank episode on the best games to watch others play, like as a spectator. Like watching a movie. There are plenty of games I have no interest in playing but I love watching others play, either as a Let's Play or just hanging out. For instance, I got a kick out of watching my friend play through all of the first Silent Hill but it's not a game whose core gameplay personally interests me.

Grant Cameron

Thanks guys this is my first and only patreon subscription. I think you should have done this ages ago! Keep up the good work!

I love The Besties. It's such a fun show and all four are great to hear from. The Resties makes learning fun. Cliched I know but I have learnt so much from the tangents the two of you go on that I am now passing onto my kids. Thank you for continuing to find a way to make The Resties.
