Which thumbnail do you think looks better? They're exactly the same except the colors are reversed. Both are attached.

Jon

I am looking forward to your video. I used to eat at Chick-fil-A frequently throughout their previous controversies a few years ago but I quit eat eating there at all this past June when Dan Cathy essentially told all white people we needed to “repent for racism”. I prefer my chicken without a side order of guilt for the color of my skin.

As someone who lives minutes from CFA HQ and the original location (still open) in Hapeville, GA, I eat a ton of chick fil a including have eaten at the original Chick-fil-A multiple times. I actually pass by more Chick-fil-As than McDonald's in my daily life. Both logos really are the same. I like the white on red for readability, however red on white is more of their trademark. Red letters white background. But again for readability I prefer white letters with a red background. But no matter what you go with the branding is definitely still there.

PS as someone who has toured Chick-fil-A headquarters, I can't wait to see the history that is included in your video. I hope to see something about the Ford manufacturing plant in there (which is now a Porsche headquarters) or the story about how a football team bought an airline ticket just to get in the airport secure side, just to get Chick-fil-A because there were no other locations around but inside the airport.

Red BG + White font is more "on brand" for them. Look at their various logos. :) PLUS, red being the primary color will stand out more in YT search. :)

Very cool Christopher, had no idea I was putting that question out to some who's so close to the brand. I assume you're talking about that Dwarf House location and after learning about it, it's definitely a place I'd like to visit one day. I'd value the colors that are more on brand, by you say you find the white background hard to read? Is there something I could do with the pictures or layout to make it more readable or is it just the colors themselves?

companyman

Good point about the red one standing out but I kind of felt the white one was more on brand for them. That's what I've seen more commonly anyway.

Look at all their social. Its all red BG + white text/icons/logo etc. their Instagram makes it especially apparent with their top icons. :) Plus all their employees shirts are red primary. Cant post pictures here otherwise I'd save you the trouble of searching. I screenshot them all. haha. Voting is close!

This kind of makes me take back my stance, the design firm that just did their logo redesign (I was looking for their brand style guide) :https://rbmm.com/work/chick-fil-a-logo-update/

Thanks Company Man! I am indeed talking about the original Dwarf House location. It has such a unique atmosphere compared to even other dwarf houses. I just love being able to order a steak or a hamburger at a chicken restaurant... Lol. Also, I hope to see a small segment about "Truett's Chick-fil-A", "Truett's Grill", and "Truett's Luau" locations. It's essentially brands within a brand. And every single one you can get a simple Chick-fil-A sandwich at heh. I've been to every single "style" of location, recently... (And every single one is ALWAYS insanely busy) https://www.chick-fil-a.com/about/s-truett-cathy-brand-restaurants To answer your question though, it's really just the color white, I often find that a lot of white in a picture can sometimes " bleach out" the actual subject text. To put it another way, the white drowns out the red. Thickening the text may help, but doing so affects the image branding and may not look true to the brand anymore. Someone else definitely makes a good point, t-shirts are red, bags are white, outside the building the text is red, but in the mobile app I see white text on a red background. Really you can't go wrong with either one in the end.

Either could work. This one may be to personal preference.

Unfortunately, those other Truett's probably won't be talked about much, if at all. There's already so much stuff I want to talk about in the video so I've been leaving out almost everything that's not directly related to their foundation or success and it's looking like it may still come in a little long. But because you mentioned it I'm making sure to include a brief mention of that Ford plant. As far as the branding, I agree with you about the white background. Plus when you combine it with YouTube's white themes, it never turns out well. I even suspect some of my white thumbnails of the past have performed poorly because of that. So right now I'm leaning toward the red one if it seems to be just as strong in conveying their branding.

companyman

I'm thinking either one would probably do fine in conveying the brand. Red seems to be more clear and eye catching so that's the one I'm leaning toward at the moment.

companyman

It has become a pretty controversial place. I'm doing my best to treat it with care in the video.

That's okay! Hopefully a part 2 may be warranted in the future! Including the controversies and such. I'll even write the Ford section for you hehe: I'm sure the original Chick-fil-A location played a monumental part in the success of the business. It was directly across the street from a Ford assembly plant, and minutes away from the Delta hub and other businesses at Atlanta airport. It provided breakfast, lunch, or dinner for many employees in the area, no matter what shift they worked, except on the infamous Sunday. Feel free to use any or all of that! On a personal note, I can't tell you how many times my family or friends or even myself decide we want Chick-fil-A, only to realize it's Sunday. It happens several times a year to be honest. And yes I agree both are just as strong and conveying branding! My vote is for the red background!
