You have it right Steph. It's one of two possibilities. The former emperor had a child with the former empress and that would be Jinshi and Ah Duo lost her child which would make Jinshi the current emperor's brother if that is true. If the story that the baby was switched is true, then Jinshi would actually be the current emperor's son. Either way whether he is the brother or son of the emperor he is very important as he would in essence be second in line to the empire seeing as the current emperor has no male heir officially. Which is why Jinshi was saying hurry and get a male child.

And just some terms to help you better understand the story. Eunuch-man without balls Empress Dowager- the former empress. That's her title Courtesan- high end prostitute Concubine- high end common law wife but not the empress. It's likely whoever produces a boy will be made empress. My speculation Apothecary- herbalist/doctor

So my understanding, from the material presented, is that Jinshi is the current Emperor's son. Ah-Do and the current Emperor were childhood friends. Mao Mao mentioned something about it being odd that he only had one concubine before his father passed. If he and his father both had children at the same time that were switched, that would mean Jinshi was brought up as the Emperor's brother, rather than his son. When they found out, they probably kept him hidden away, which is why they talk about him having a sickly brother. His real brother died from the honey.

Jinshi the eunuch is “24 years old” (he is in the rare palace in disguise as a eunuch) but Jinshi the prince is actually 19 (his real age). Also, the current Emperor and Ah Duo’s son is Jinshi which makes him the crown prince. He is next in line to the throne. He is officially known as the brother of the emperor because of the switched at birth situation from the last arc
