Hey everyone!  Here's my reaction and review of episode 18 of the final season of AoT!  Wow, so much going on here - Gabi's growth, Zeke showing up, Yelena's FACE, WHAT THE HECK, and a Sneak Pieck....!!!!  So Eren and Zeke are about to make contact, until Pieck takes one of the most important shots in history...!!!  We also see Gabi come to the same realization as Reiner here....none of us are devils, and we are all devils.  Also, I'm pretty sure Falco just proposed?!  There's still a matter of minutes left for Eren and Zeke to execute their plan, what on earth is gonna happen?!  I can't wait to find out!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Oh btw, enjoy Buffy's brief cameo in the intro :P I thought you couldn't see her, but I think there's a brief glimpse of her little face in there haha!!! ^_^

Pieck is honestly so smart, she's almost the Armin of the Marleyans. Maybe not quite as inspiring, but she has quite a brain in her. Her idea to pretend to be dead was pretty fantastic. Also, I don't think your inability to pick a side is rare. AOT doesn't seem to really encourage picking one side in its struggles lmao

Mikasa, leaving the scarf behind is truly heartbreaking, but I'm proud of her at the same time. Also, I love the juxtaposition of Nile's, willingness to dissect Eren, in season & then save Falco, in season 4. A lot of growth for supporting characters in this story:)

So, quick question here: when you finish an episode of this show, do you ever get the urge to exercise immediately after just to get the adrenaline rush down? XD Season description so far: Everyone’s mad about something, and nothing’s going according to plan. Reiner’s right in everything he’s saying, but it also seems like instead of looking for a solution, he just wants an end to everything. He’s not wrong about all the suffering, though, and we know it’s taken a toll on him. Eren DID look surprised when Zeke showed up: almost like he wasn’t actually expecting it to happen. Given that Levi was in charge, that could be genuine surprise that Zeke got away. Or was Zeke’s escape not part of his plan at all? More on that in a minute. Can we just appreciate the timing of Sasha’s family while all the cadets are just standing around trying to figure out what do and they’re like “um, can we go now?” 😂 Mood. Something occurred to me while Mikasa was wondering why Eren had told her he hates her and Armin was putting things together: could it possibly be that he’s pushing them away because he DOESN’T expect to survive and he’s trying to make the rift easier on himself and then in his own twisted logic? Pyxis’ comment on having a drinking problem I think means that he’s telling them he is one if the soldiers who drank the spinal fluid wine. Armin’s speech behind Yelena is him making his own play. He’s pretending to be on the same set of goals as she is, I think, since she’s standing right there. The others looked a little shocked when he said it, but I think they’ll catch on soon enough that he’s feigning an alliance while trying to figure out what to actually do. Okay, we gotta talk about Yelena’s face. XD First off, that’s thumbnail material, plain and simple. 😂 Second, my friends and I have been coming up with memes ever since we saw it. Here’s the three we like the most: “Mom when you ask if you can go to McDonald’s for dinner when there’s still food in the house.” “CRWBY when you ask any of them if Volume 9 has a release date yet.” “Melissa when she sees the “To Be Continued” screen on this show.” 😉 (If I clipped every episode you saw of this show together, it would be a very funny reel.) I’m glad someone picked up on Mikasa leaving her scarf behind. It’s a significant gesture, but does that mean she’s leaving Eren behind, too? Or maybe it’s just a temporary separation, cause she does have every right to be a little ticked off at him right now, even if part of what he told her was true. Gabi seems to finally start realizing the weight of what she’s done. But no matter what she does, she can’t undo it. She’s going to have to carry that deed with her the rest of her life, and who knows if she’ll ever atone for it, especially with the one sister who’s set to kill her without a second thought. I get the feeling that reckoning isn’t done yet. Also, I do like the symbolism of her ripping off Falco’s armband, especially since she’s been the most zealot-driven character up till now regarding “being a good Eldian.” Also, noticed there were a lot of empty bird cages in the room during that scene. Either it’s symbolism for what they’re talking about… or they ended up at Blake’s house somehow. 🤷‍♂️ Sneak Pieck…? Really? Yang would be proud. 😎 Here’s the one I’ve been chewing on the most: recall I said Eren looked surprised to see Zeke like he wasn’t part of the plan. And we know he’s limping towards him slowly. Yet, he’s strong enough to fend off Marley, the Armored and the Jaw Titan at the same time. I’m not sure that Eren wants to go through with this and he’s purposely walking toward him slowly and feigning his injury while trying to figure out his next move. Cause we know he’s making the other Titans attacking him look silly. So what’s he REALLY up to? To steal a now often-used quote: “I don’t know if I completely understand what’s going on, or if I have a million questions!”

Manny

I gonna say xD That was a small delight to see her 😊

kamenriderhime

Hehehe!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!!!!!!! ^_^ I'm hoping as she settles out of her puppy phase a bit more, she'll eventually be content with just chilling on the couch while I react. She's already claimed the couch as hers :P

kamenriderhime

Oh good comparison, that's so true about Pieck!!! Glad I'm not alone in my feelings, too!!!!!! :P

kamenriderhime

I know!!! It's really sad and empowering at the same time. Oh such a good point about Nile!!! So much character growth going on right now!!!

kamenriderhime

Hahahaha I'm so AMPED UP after these reactions, omg!!! It would be the perfect time for a workout!!! :P I'd say that's an accurate description! So true about Reiner, he just wants to end it all....not totally unlike the plan to just end the whole Eldian race, really. We're all broken at this point and just want relief as opposed to resolution, I think. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed Eren's look!!!! And I think that's a great theory that perhaps Eren is limping to buy time.....not unlike Armin buying time with "teaming up" with Yelena and crew!! HAHAHA the "can we go now" line added some much needed levity to the scene! Great point that perhaps Eren was trying to lessen the severity of his friends losing him. OHHH that's what the drinking comment was about! I don't know if I fully realized that Armin was just buying time with that play, good call!! Also, THE FACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's gotta be the face of 1000 memes by now!!! Yours were pretty funny, I gotta say hahaha!!! OMG that's totally me at every TBC screen!!! I would love to see a mashup of me getting angry at the ep being cut off!!! XD Yeah, the scarf was so impactful!!! Hmm, I think it could be her detaching from Eren or just temporary like you said. I like to think that for the first time, she is really actively choosing herself first, and if she's helping Eren, that's a conscious decision of her own (from her perspective; I still somewhat call BS on that whole Ackermann thing). Yes, now Gabi has that awful regret that Reiner is all too familiar with. Ripping off the armband was so significant. Gotta be honest, if I had to put money down, I don't see Gabi making it out alive....so who knows if she'll get to atone :/ Also I'm glad I got the Yang "Gold Star of Jokes" for my Sneak Pieck joke!!! XD Oh, that quote has NEVER been so applicable!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, it's kinda where I live in AoT!!!! :P Thanks for the insights!

2023-01-17 00:45:03 I think this was a great episode. It didn’t bother me at all but I know some people didn’t like the relatively long recap by AOT standards but compared to other shows the recap is nothing. Also they used different music at the start which gave a different tone to the repeated scenes. I love the little much needed comedy of Sasha’s family asking to leave. It’s so interesting to think about that yes Jean has been saying that Eren is crazy and dangerous since the beginning and even if it was understandable and him pushing characters forward was necessary a lot of aspects of Eren were crazy and it’s scary to think that Jean might be right. It’s so nice to see that no matter how angry they are at him they still care about Eren. I love the little detail that Mr. Braun waits to make sure the kids are following. I really think it’s obvious that Eren did such hurtful things to his friends to push them away to protect them and it seems like Armin does too but when he remembers that powerful moment on the beach I think he is realizing something about what Eren is doing and if my theories are correct it’s nothing good and notice that Armin deflects from answering. There’s something so powerful about the symbolism/metaphor or just the imagery of the attack Titan’s head resting on the islands armored Titan’s even if it’s only for a second. And now we have Reiner asking the under question what is Eren fighting for so desperately because we don’t know thanks to a genius writing decision in my opinion to not show us his thoughts mostly at all. Although seeing his determination and resolve with this crazy reverberating roar/scream is the most life we have seen from Eren in the present for most if not all of season 4. I know it’s weird to say but I love the brutal attack towards Reiner’s jaw because it may be gory but it’s great animation. The feelings towards him are complicated to say the least but I love how when Zeke appears everyone looks towards him it’s honestly cool although it is a little strange that Eren is surprised to see Zeke. It’s actually just impressive how easily and well Zeke deals with Marley’s forces this episode including the Titans. I think the tension is increased so well to have Eren’s mobility be so handicapped and Zeke having to stay on the wall to defend him. I love seeing the changes in Gabi and how much she wants to help Falco after everything he has done for her. It's crazy that Nile has been part of the story since season one and is important being a friend of Erwin and being a big part of the coup d’état in season 3 but has only simple characterizations like being a family man and his loyalty to humanity. I love how the author takes such simple characterizations to create really powerful moments like Nile coming to terms with what might happen to him and how much he wishes to talk to his family one more time which connects to what he does later in the episode. Jean coming right up to the cadet with the gun giving no fucks whatsoever is so cool. The sad thing about Shadis is that him saying he fought with a bear was very likely to protect the cadets who did this to protect the cadets that did this to him and the 1st place. I love how even in this situation Pixis is still able to rally everyone together. Mikasa leaving her scarf behind is so meaningful considering how much it means especially for what it means for her. Whether or not Eren is telling the truth, lying or something in the middle about the Ackerman bloodline this is important because for Mikasa this is truly an action she is making of her own free will. The slow walking up the stairs of what remains of the 104th is so cool. Also while Mikasa is carrying almost double because her strength is ridiculous Jean is carrying a full set of thunder spears as well which is impressive. I think the image of Yelena with her hands outstretched as the zeppelins are falling is an iconic shot also the animation for the explosions is really good. It’s interesting for Armin to be playing the part of being completely on Zeke’s side since lying has been a big part of his character. It makes sense that Yelena would see through this and while her face is terrifying it’s also amazing and apparently the anime made it better. I definitely agree that it was her testing Armin’s intentions and luckily he may not be truthful but does intend to help because who knows what Yelena is capable. Also it’s scary but you have to find humor in it and that’s Yelena scaring Mikasa the goddess of death enough to draw her sword LOL. I love seeing Nile showing such humanity by bringing Falco to his brother because if he can’t have closure with his family he wants to give closure to Falco. Humanity in dark situations is a theme in the show after all. It’s great to see the start of the culmination of Gabi’s character development stopping Colt from shooting. I love the culmination of Gabi’s character development in this episode. It’s so heartbreaking and heartwarming to see her reactions to the different opinions on her from the Braus family. It’s fascinating to see this microcosm of the cycle of violence here which is what helps Gabi fully understands it. It’s really tragic to see her internalize the fact she killed just a normal person in Sasha and the trauma that comes with understanding all of this including there being no such thing as devils. Also the symbolism/imagery of all the bird cages some of which are broken, still closed and open. The open one representing Gabi’s now open mind. Falco’s love confession is adorable, sad and surprisingly funny especially the look between Gabi and his brother and her being cutely flustered. There is such beautiful symbolism and it means so much for Gabi to rip off his armband like he did for her. Also even if it made him hesitate the idea that Zeke would not scream if necessary is laughable because even if he cares about Falco Zeke very much believes the ends justify the means. I think his brother was just trying to give him hope. Pieck’s trick is so impressive and amazing. Also there is something darkly comical about what happens. The shot of the sunlight behind Zeke and the hole is just art. Finally I love that what Reiner is saying at the end is exactly what he was saying about Eren at the end of season 2. Great reaction to 1 of my favorite shows. Keep up the great work. :-) <3

Hey, sorry it took me so long to get back to you!! Sasha's family was like a cool breeze in hell in this ep haha. And seeing all the caring our crew still has for Eren is great. Yeah the animation is really working here! And the little hint of surprise from Eren to see Zeke was interesting for sure. Seeing the changes in Gabi is really interesting as well....she and Falco are so sweet together haha. Watching her realize the reality of what's going on has been a journey. And Falco's love confession is everything!! The stuff with Nile is great as well. Pixis has still got it for sure! And the scarf stuff with Mikasa is so sad but meaningful. The scene with Yelena is great! And yeah it really says something that she even affected Mikasa that way!! Pieck was so clever! I know, it comes full circle so well with Eren and Reiner!!!! Thank you so much for all your encouragement and support!!!!!!!!!
