Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 15 of REBELS!!!!  OMG purrgils!!!!!!!!  I love them!!!!!  I like how we had a whole arc with Hera coming to accept them, Ezra having to work to figure out what they were trying to communicate, etc.  They weren't vicious beasties, they just hadn't found someone they could communicate with yet!!!  And, it looks like the jump to hyperspace was totally ripped off from their natural ability, wow!!!  Great ep! Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

In the words of Blind Wave : SPACE WHALES! This is such weird episode compared to others up to this point but it’s so interesting. These animals that can just naturally travel through hyperspace, seeing more of Ezra’s affinity for animals, and it’s another Star Trek-y sorta episode. That’s a funny trend with these shows, when it gets REALLY weird, it’s more like you’re watching Star Trek instead of Star Wars lol.

LOL yes!!! It's definitely a very Trek-ish concept, and I totally get what you mean about them taking a Trek route when things get really fantastical on this show haha.

Hyperdriving space whales, gotta love Rebels! The hyperspace lanes that were established, were originally purgil routes to traverse the stars, hence Hera's lines about them messing up the lanes, it was theirs to begin with. Ezra is beginning to show he has a talent for communicating with animals, so much so that even Kanan can't pick up on the purgil. And that purgil was telling Ezra it was needing the fuel for hyperspace. Some Jedi have unique abilities, and this maybe Ezra's. Kanan's ability is insane force jumps. Some others like Quinlan Vos are able to touch an object and recall a force moment with it. Some other have healing abilities too which we've seen. They were dealing with a mining guild I think, who had a contract to supply fuel to the Empire.

I believe the ability to control beasts with the Force is called Beast Control/Animal Bond. Some Jedi, like Ezra are really uniquely gifted at it.

It seems when we meet up with everyone at the start of this episode, they’ve been out WAY longer and farther than they were intending to go, so they probably weren’t counting on being so low on fuel. What is it with science fiction and whale like creatures by the way, if you don’t mind the subtle Star Trek reference while we’re on that topic. 😉 It definitely seems like Hera is especially trigger happy until Ezra talks her down - I suppose if you lost a friend to one of these things, you’d hold a bit of a grudge. Also, I am not sure what Ezra’s connection with the purrgil is but maybe it’s just something he’s more attuned to? All Jedi have different strengths and weaknesses, we know they aren’t just carbon copies… or, clones… of each other. Everyone has specialties. Everyone has this look when Kanan and Hera start arguing on the com or in the cockpit of “Mom and Dad are fighting again!” You get used to it. There seemed to be a bit of a misunderstanding - the people on the Refinery were part of the Mining Guild and were contracted to supply the Empure, but they themselves weren’t actually Imperial troops. Ezra was able to breathe until he got pulled into the gas. While the purrgil were stocking up, it’s toxic to humans. Also, am I the only one who noticed the Wilhelm scream when he knocked the initial trooper off the gun? 😄 Seems like a lot of “fairy tales” actually are based on facts, aren’t they… even hyperdrive shakes. They’re not hostile but they aren’t non lethal either… but it’s definitely better to try and make friends than enemies. Kanan… we get it you were right, you probably should stop poking the bear though… before Hera gets… irritated… Also you talked over the best line when Zeb said to Hera during the raid, “Next time we come up with a plan, let’s just plan on the plan changing!” 😂

Oh that was cool. I wondered where hyperspace originated. 🐋 🦑 🪐

Hahaha yes!! And that's so funny that the lanes were actually theirs to mess up in the first place. Go figure! So cool that Ezra can establish that kind of communication. That's true about Quinlan Vos! I'd never really thought about it but that makes sense. Ohhhhh a mining guild, that's why they didn't look like the Empire, got it. Thanks!

kamenriderhime

Makes sense about the fuel! Hahahaha I was kind of thinking of Star Trek honestly! Yeah, I get why Hera feels the way she does, but it was nice that she learned to overcome it a bit. I'd never really thought about Jedi specialties but perhaps this is Ezra's! Got it, makes sense about the mining guild, sorry for the mixup! Hahaha I did not notice the Wilhelm! Yeah, all stories came from somewhere I guess! It's for sure better to be friends with them! HAHAHA yeah I would NOT push Hera's buttons that way! Oops, good line from Zeb, sounds like we both had something to say at that moment, oh well :P

Another one of my favourite episodes in this series, not least because it is an example of one of the episodes that ventures a little away from ‘sci- fi’ and introduces some fantasy/ mystical elements of sorts. This episode is also interesting because we see a particular attitude that makes Hera a good leader: a practical, unromantic focus on the now: I am thinking of her attitude towards the purgil. On this occasion that clashed with Kanan and Ezras perhaps more Jedi like approach to the Purgil, although it was mum and dad that did the bickering about this, and not Ezra :-D

kamenriderhime

Yes, I loved the mystical elements!! Good point about Hera. Lol gotta love the family dynamic!!
