Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 4, episode 13 of REBELS!!!!  OMG!!!!!!!!!!  NO FREAKIN WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  You guys, you did SO WELL to keep this from me....I really honestly did not know how she was gonna come back!!!  AHSOKA!!!!!!!!  The world between worlds was so intense and awesome, and WOW, that is a LOT of power for one person to have.  Hate to say it, but the temple did the right thing vanishing at the end!!  Also, Ezra's so strong to have to watch Kanan and not do anything....but that's what he would have wanted!  He made a careful, thoughtful decision there.  Dang guys, this episode blew my mind!!  So THAT'S how she made it out!!!!  :O  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Good idea Nick, and the finale was amazing!!! Saltire - yeah it must have been before I got to the Mortis arc! I just got back from a trip and can't wait to dig into what you guys thought of my reaction to the finale!!!!! XD

kamenriderhime

Saltire - good point on the ministers, they don't pop up much. It would be SO bad if the Emperor got his hands on this world between worlds!!! I didn't realize Ezra had been here before, hmmm??? Maybe he does have some kind of connection! Also good call that the lines referenced what was about to happen. I'm not sure about Morai, it does raise a lot of questions doesn't it?? And wow, I had no idea just how special Ezra was!!! That's gutwrenching that Ahsoka is willing to sacrifice herself to try and save any remaining shred of Anakin. Also WOW talk about a weird day haha!! Poor Ahsoka! That's actually an excellent point about Ahsoka being able to decipher things that "higher up" Jedi could not; I think the Morai explanation suffices but I kind of like the digging-deeper explanation of Ahsoka having a clearer perspective than those on the council who had become so blinded to what was going on around them. It's heartbreaking to watch, but Ezra learns a good lesson here for sure. It's so similar to what happened with Padme, but we know how that ended. Ahsoka, too, is learning to let go. Well you know how I feel about Palpatine but I will say he is wildly entertaining and a great villain!!! The music is phenomenal and the "Goodbye Kanan" line is so simple yet so powerful. OMG Chopper's mowing moment hahaha!! Also I couldn't agree more about the hug from Zeb. Nick and Saltire - I can see how this is a controversial topic in the fandom that needs to be handled very carefully! I need to check out that link, thanks! I hear you two on the sequels; I know they had some problems but also a lot of good things too. A rewatch sounds like a great idea, oooh especially an Easter one!!! Thanks for all the info!!

Amy Payne

I'm a bit late to this, but if you watch the fight between Ahsoka and Vader, Ahsoka sacrifices herself to save him at the end, She notices the ceiling was about to collapse and crush him, but she breaks the floor out from under him as the expense of her own life, but was saved from her sacrifice.

kamenriderhime

Wow!!! I didn't notice that. That adds so much!! Even under these circumstances, she still cares! :')

I love how much you catch in this series on a rewatch. If you go back to the Season One and Season Two episodes where Ezra speaks with Yoda in the Jedi Temple, you can see hints of the sort of 'architecture' that makes up the World Between Worlds wherever Ezra is in his scenes with Yoda. Very nice and subtle bit of foreshadowing. I also like how the temple itself has a sort of similar attitude to Hera when it comes to itself as a work of living art: this belongs to us, and we'd rather destroy it than let it fall into the wrong hands. And one last thing... In the pilot episode, when Ezra is in a cell, he threatens the guards that they'll be sorry when they hear from his uncle, the Emperor. Well, Ezra, Uncle Palps finally showed up, and you definitely seem to have his attention. So... Yay?

kamenriderhime

It's so true, I've actually been dying to rewatch this one too! I do know what you mean from having editing those eps for YouTube not too long ago. Good call about the similar attitude that the temple has to Hera, I hadn't thought of that. Hahahaha Uncle Palps!!! Who knew back then we'd get this scene of the two of them :P

Brian Settles

You might vaguely remember me as that one guy who posted on your Vinland Saga reactions. Came back because the new season is airing and I figured you would get around to it eventually. But of course I love Rebels and caught up pretty quickly haha. Also digging into the Jojo stuff cause I love that show too. Love this episode, it perfectly encapsulates what makes the more mystical elements of Star Wars so compelling.

Nick

Ahsoka coming back has been the most top secret information ever since the end of season 2 😁😁😎😎 More later, but this is an awesome episode, and not just because of Ahsoka’s return. I really love this episode in so many ways. This is where the Narnia influence comes in. The “Wood between the Worlds” in The Magician’s Nephew (chronologically the first Narnia story) is apparently the influence for the World Between Worlds in this episode. The parallels are certainly there even if the association is accidental, which I don’t think it is.

Nick

Yes I love the mystical - fantasy even - elements that are so strong in this.

Saltire

Haha, great reaction to what is a bonkers, and much talked about episode!! The Minister interrogating Sabine suggests Ezra isn't safe entering the World Between Worlds; I wonder since he is investigating force lore, that he must know that Palpatine is a force user, something the galaxy at large doesn't. Of course we saw his conversation with the Emperor in the previous episode about the gateways into this place, and we have only met one other Minister in Star Wars I believe, one who woke up Vader in Rogue One. Perhaps these are allies of the Sith, like the Sith Eternal on Exegol we saw in Rise Of Skywalker. I did say when the Empire got their hands on the Jedi Temple that it was bad news, and now we see why. If Sidious can get into the World Between Worlds, he has control over the entire universe, since he can manipulate any event. If anything this is even worse than what the Death Star will bring! Speaking of the sequels, Ezra hears all sorts of voices in all sorts of periods, some from the future. You can hear Jyn Erso give her call to arms to those at Yavin, to go to Scarif and the start Of A New Hope, which is only about a month away now, and we hear some sequel characters like Rey, Kylo Ren (whom I can never work out what he is saying on each rewatch!), Poe Dameron and Maz Kanata. The two lines that affect me the most however, are "This is our most desperate hour" from Leia and as Ezra walks towards Morai's portal, where we hear Anakin from The Clone Wars Movie when he tells Ahsoka - hinting about what we are about to see - "you would never have made it as Obi-Wan's Padawan... but you might make it as mine." Ezra doesn't know it, but he has been in this place several times now. The first is when he got his first lightsabre crystal, and the second when again he met Yoda before they went to Malachor. Does Ezra have a special connection to this place? Is he master of it? Questions for another time. Another thing to think on, is what exactly is Morai? Obviously we know its part of the Daughter that is connected to Ahsoka, but is it part of the cosmic force made corporeal? Vader saw it in the finale of Clone Wars as he picked up Ahsoka's lightsabre, and Ahsoka wasn't there. Of course to me that always said to him that she was very much alive to give him conformation of this; but does it also act independently of her too? It should also be noted that at the end of season 2 at the end when we see Vader limping away from the temple, Morai was there above him, then it immediately came here and perhaps waited on the time when Ezra would come. It helps Ezra here hinting at him to help her, so I'm wondering what its overall purpose is. Just to help Ahsoka when she needs, if so, why? Does it have a larger plan for her to fulfil over time we've yet to see? So many questions! Anyway as great as the end of season 2 was, we saw Ahsoka somehow get out after the temple explodes, but we never came back to it for a resolution, until now. I remember when you met Ezra in the pilot Mel, and all the characters at the start ask "who is that kid?" and on your reaction you mention someone who might be important. Well now you see one of the reasons why; if not for Ezra, Ahsoka dies at the temple. I've had so many debates and arguments about her fight with Vader, but one thing I note, is that when the temple is about to explode, she tries to open the floor to save Anakin, her master, and its only then that Vader has an opening chance to slay her. She is willing to sacrifice herself to save what remains of her master, even if as she states later, she can't 'save' him from what he became. Ahsoka had one hell of a last few hours, running around a Sith Temple, chasing and fighting Inquisitors, Maul, her old master, then being thrown into a time two years on in seconds, see young Ezra - who she just pushed out not 10 seconds ago with his longer hair - now grown up, finds out Kanan is dead, when she just saw him minutes ago, and then has to fight off Darth freakin' Sidious!! I'd like to note an observation Ahsoka makes about DUME, especially since you know Clone Wars quite well Melissa. In the Yoda arc, when he is being tested by the High Council when he tells them he hears a voice beyond in Qui-Gon (though he doesn't state its him), some of the council members dismiss it out of hand and act as though thats impossible. Ki-Adi Mundi and Mace Windu being some who don't believe that. Its interesting to see that Ahsoka, who never became a Jedi Knight, is able to see that those that have passed, may still be able to guide others along. Again, how does she surmise this? Is it because of Morai containing the spirit of The Daughter; or does Ahsoka see more clearly through the force that some of those other well-regarded Jedi Masters, were not? Its saddening hearing the desperation in Ezra's voice, as he thinks he can also save Kanan. This is exactly what Anakin believed about Padme too as he went down a dark path to try to prevent her own death. Ezra eventually sees through the vision of Kanan on top of the fuel pods as he passes, that it was Kanan's moment, and he must accept his sacrifice and let him go, as all padawans eventually must. Its a harsh way for him to learn this, but a necessary one for him to become a Jedi Knight. Ahsoka too realises this when she tells Ezra about letting go; she has to do the same with Anakin. I always think of her introduction in The Mandalorian as she says there about seeing what anger and fear can do 'to the best of us'. By then she has been through this here, accepted it; but a sadness will always remain for her fallen master. You may not like him Mel, but Palpatine's cackle as he thinks he is about to gain access to this gateway, is a hoot! He may be the devil, but he is a great fun villain! He shows a new ability here as he delves into Sith Alchemy, a blue force fire that wounds Ahsoka and causes Ezra's trooper armour to become ashen. They barely get away from him, and Ahsoka goes back to Malachor (as it will possibly affect other things by going elsewhere) whilst Ezra gets back to the Spectres and seals the door to stop Sidious from gaining true unlimited power. The music in the final 5 minutes is tremendous, as Ezra closes the 'door' and then also in the final moments of the episode. Its stunning stuff and brings tears to the eyes as its a final take on Kanan's Theme, as his remaining spirit moves on into the beyond. "Goodbye Kanan" gets me every time; Ezra says it simply and in acceptance, but we as the audience know the finality of that line. Caleb Dume is gone. Ezra now has all the knowledge needed to realise his own destiny. A couple of quick notes to end with for this episode. Chopper using a land excavator to happily mow down stormtroopers is legendary! And Hera's body language at the end is painful to watch. She still has her hand on her shoulder where Kanan touched it, and you can feel her grief, pain and vulnerability as she has to accept that he is gone once and for all now. She needs a big warming hug from Zeb! This is a divisive episode amongst the fanbase, some love it, some say its their favourite episode of Rebels; and some hate it because they think its about time travel (its not as Filoni confirmed) which has always been seen to be a no-no throughout the fanbase and supposed Star Wars lore. For my own part, I love it; its a new concept that brings about interesting ideas to further extend the mystery of the force, which has always been my biggest love with Star Wars, about how it ties everything together. This corresponds with my own ideas and beliefs about the universe at large, that we are all connected, and the World Between Worlds, for me, is a concept all about that.

Nick

And that is the most exquisitely, movingly, beautiful ending, with the music, the imagery, Hera’s emotions (her voice again!), and Ezra looking at the Wolf and saying goodbye to Kanan. It kills me every time.

Ravi Naik

Awesome reaction! This is one of my favorite TV episodes ever, and I never get tired of seeing it. It is a daring fantastical foray and an emotional gut punch. Ahsoka's line: "You can't save your master and I can't save mine" destroys me every time. Looking forward to the finale reaction!

Saltire

Oh its just gorgeous and painfully sad. I have it there in my music files (along with many pieces from the show), and listen to it a fair bit.

Saltire

Haha yeah and keeping that secret worked a treat seeing how shocked Mel was by seeing and finding out what happened to Ahsoka! Awesome! :D

Tyler Stobbe

Hey, it’s been a while since we made everyone turn into a glass case of emotion, so let’s really punch them in the feels today! -Dave Filoni, probably It’s interesting that they didn’t just pick random lines to put in the echoes, but they’re reflecting key points in the series for the most part. Basically, the impression I got from all of this is Ezra has somehow stumbled into the middle of a dormant TARDIS and is now going to travel the space-time continuum… wait I’m getting series crossed up. The way Ezra saves Ahsohka certainly makes for some timey-wimey questions, but the biggest one would be if Ahsohka returned to a time before all this happened or after her fight with Vader. That’s confusing. I think the biggest point being made here is the similarity between Ahsohka and Ezra - they both lost their masters. Obviously under different circumstances, but perhaps the lesson that was being given was you need to accept the fate of another - there might be something at work you don’t see. If Ezra saves Kanan, everyone else dies, himself included. Ahsohka, of course has no way of knowing this, but Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side is what would eventually overthrow the Emperor himself (annnd I just realized how much of a pun that was right after I typed it. 😆) People are set on certain paths and gates because the Force wants them there, even if it’s hard to see why at the time. There was an interesting whisper when Ezra shut the gate (this is why I personally prefer the subtitles on so I don’t miss anything). It said “the future can be changed,” or something to that affect. There’s other scenes in this episode of course, but they’re not quite as needed for analysis and plus… you think I’m gonna keep typing here while Chopper has control of a large moving vehicle? 😳

Nick

Yes very much so: I’m not sure whether Mel was wanting to laugh or cry when Ezra saved Ahsoka by pulling her through the portal 🙂 Interesting question: to me it looked like Vader should have died when he fell through the floor, and yet he didn’t. So, not sure how he survived? Also, did Vader see Ezra pull Ahsoka through the portal? Is this how Palpatine came to know that this World between Worlds existed?

Nick

Having to watch Ezra let Kanan die when he desperately wanted to save him is tough to watch. I love that Ahsoka doesn’t try and force him away from saving Kanan but asks him and reasons with him, so that it’s his own decision. She does this despite surely knowing that if Ezra pulled Kanan through the portal then the whole Ghost crew die in the fuel pod explosion, including Ezra, which in turn means that Ahsoka would die as Ahsoka would then not have been pulled away from Vader through the portal. Mind bending stuff, which is why Filoni has taken a risk including the World Between Worlds in the Star Wars universe: if such a place is not handled carefully in the future then it could lead to contradictions and unhappy fans. Personally I love this new element, as I do all the fantasy/ mystical stuff in Rebels. I suspect that Filoni will use this place sparingly in the future. And I love the way Ezra says ‘Goodbye Kanan’. The lesson about letting go has been well learned by Ezra: something that Anakin never mastered, to his and many other peoples detriment. Ezra says it quietly and simply (which makes it all the more moving), but having watched the whole series to this point we all know how big a thing it was for Ezra to be able to do that.

Nick

This was the ending I was hinting at without giving too much away a while back. Also, as Mel pointed out, the music right after the end of this episode is really gorgeous (and fitting) too.

Saltire

Yes it was a great emotional reaction from Melissa. I just rewatched it and she doesn't know what to do, she is that much in shock! As for Vader surviving, perhaps the upper floor took most of the blast and even if he fell a great way, his cybernetic legs would have took the brunt (hence him limping out the temple at the end of season 2) and also we know what Sith are like, they come back from the dead all the time! :D No Vader doesn't see Ahsoka getting pulled through the portal, as the floor gives way he briefly looks back up and she is gone, so he concludes she died there. As for Palps knowing about the World Between Worlds, I think he would have an inkling about that place when they captured the temple earlier in that season. Kanan in season 1 when trying to find the temple, says to Ezra that the Empire sought out most of the Jedi Temples and Outposts and 'destroyed' many of them, suggesting maybe they weren't so notable as the one on Lothal, which may be a hub itself to gain access to it. I'd like to go into this more after the finale, as we can speculate about what we'll see in the Ahsoka series more then; but I do have a lot of questions about that place.

Saltire

I watched an interview about this episode with Filoni on Rebels Recon (which I really should watch since I've seen the show so many times now, and I did so watching behind the scenes stuff with Clone Wars, so dunno why I've never done it with my fave Star Wars show), and here is the link to it so you can hear from yourself what the great man has to say on it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbSLauUibsk I love what he says at the end, that they have to keep being original and creative, taking chances whilst trying to stay on board with George Lucas's vision. And I think thats why some have an issue with this, its something new and they are unsure about it; but if the fanbase goes after the creators too much, then chances will stop being taken, so we would end up with another Force Awakens (which is fun in its own right, but is essentially A New Hope remade), where we've seen it all before and then Disney gets moaned at for going stale. I'd rather they did take chances on things that might not work, than just go over the same things again and again; because people will stop watching and Star Wars will disappear. These late episodes of Rebels help it step out from Clone Wars even more. The scope of the latter show was incredible, but Rebels, to do what they did with the budget they got given, is quite remarkable, and if anything shows new stuff that helps push Star Wars forward even more than its illustrious predecessor. And yes, the final step for any Padawan, is to honour the teachings of their masters, but abandon their attachments to them. Fondness and friendship can remain, but the need to stay tethered to their master, must be dropped if a Padawan is to become a true and wise Jedi Knight. Ezra is becoming this.

Saltire

On music, I'm going to request to Melissa to keep an ear out for the outro music in the finale and to check out the full credits, as you know why! Also it just helps emotionally to put a nice little bow on the show at the finish, to round out this mini-masterpiece of a series.

Saltire

Yes Ahsoka, like Ezra with Kanan here, has to finally let Anakin go. They are on different paths now.

Nick

Yes Mel did momentarily seem in a state of genuine shock :-) I should go back and watch that bit where Ezra pulls Ahsoka through the portal to see where Vader is looking, although I have already looked and find it hard to tell. There is one hint that maybe Palpatine already knew in season 2 episode 1, The Siege if Lothal. Minister Tua contacts the Rebels wanting to defect in exchange for information. She mysteriously says that there was something other than the new TIE factory she had information on but of course she is killed before she gets to tell the rebels this mysterious secret. Of course it could just be that she was hinting that they knew of the Jedi temple only, or maybe it was something else completely. But yes the new Ahsoka series discussion is close to possible now - now that we are sadly almost at the end of Rebels.

Nick

Thanks I’ll take a look at that link. And yes I agree about adding new elements and taking risks. Of all the sequel movies it is the Force Awakens that I have the most problems with: I see the other two movies as good attempts to dig Star Wars out of the mess that the Force Awakens was. I could start to rant about how bad Force Awakens was but I’ll be good. Having said that, perhaps I should go back and watch it again to see if another viewing helps me appreciate it a bit more :-)

Manny

Wow that’s one way to bring a character back ⏳⏱ 😯

Saltire

I got that info about Vader's pov from the Star Wars website (which isn't perfect in itself, but is the official take), and here is the link to what it says about that bit with Ahsoka : https://www.starwars.com/series/star-wars-rebels/a-world-between-worlds-trivia-gallery?image_id=5a8ca8457f5431004994bc29 Yes what Minister Tua says at the start of season 2 before she is killed, she does mention about the Emperor having a specific interest in Lothal. Its a very subtle line that's easily missed and only becomes more paramount on further rewatches; but I do remember telling Melissa about that line when we see Vader and the Inquisitors take over the temple. So yes you could be right, that the Emperor knew that an access to the World Between Worlds had to be in or around Lothal; or knew that there was a hitherto unknown temple there that could be very important for his plans (as if he needed anymore power!).

Saltire

Ha yes, now is not the time for sequel bashing (though I do enjoy them in the main and they are far more fun for me to watch than the prequels except for the last hour of Episode III); but they brought in JJ Abrams to reboot Star Wars, as he did Star Trek, and with him being a bigger fan of the latter, he didn't know so much about Star Wars, hence went with what he knew. I have no idea why he didn't bring the likes of Filoni or Henry Gilroy who worked on Rebels here and TCW in a lot of of the bigger arcs; but we can all see now it was the start of the mess with that trilogy. I do have no issue with them bringing Rey and co back post-sequels however, but yes again a discussion for another time because I have thoughts on all that, that could tie in with all sorts of Star Wars media now seen under Disney, including here with Rebels.

kamenriderhime

Thank you so much!!!! OMG, such an ep!!! That line was fantastic, it hit me in my soul. It's hard letting go no matter the circumstances, but it has to be done...like you said Saltire!

kamenriderhime

OMG yes the ending!!! :'D Oh, good request Saltire, I'm watching it today so I'll let it fully play through! Thanks!

kamenriderhime

HAHAHAHAH I'm sure that was the motto for this ep :P That's so true, they're not random. Hahahaha oops wrong series :P Yeah I wasn't sure where she returned to, and it's definitely wibbly wobbly, but I can't complain either! Ohhhh yeah that was a huge lesson, their similarities are definitely there. HAHAHAHA overthrow!!!!!!!!!!! :P But yeah, I couldn't agree more about the difficulty in seeing, but importance of knowing, how events were set up just how they were supposed to be. Oooh, that is a chilling line. I did my best with the subs, but I can see why it's beneficial to have them on for this one! HAHAHAHA yeah I'd get to safety while Chopper is operating heavy machinery :P

kamenriderhime

Hey Brian!!!! Welcome back!!! I do need to get back to Vinland Saga at some point! Yay, so glad you are watching along with some other shows I'm doing though! It's amazing! So true about the mystical / fantasy elements.

kamenriderhime

Ahhhh you guys were so clever keeping it from me! I didn't have a clue!! WHOA, I need to go back and see that ep, I totally missed that! Ohhhh okay thanks for clarifying that she is put back at the scene of the fight, but AFTER the events....I always wondered why the owl was there, I took it as a sign that she was still alive! So cool!! Oh yeah I can totally see the Narnia influence now! Hahahah I think I was about to both laugh and cry at that moment :P Also that's a great point about Vader, that would explain how Palpatine knew! Ohh interesting about the hint too though. Oh yes the line, I think I do remember it being pointed out! I can't wait for us to be able to chat about the Ahsoka series! I'm watching the last Rebels today....it's bittersweet :'D (I have to film a bit early because I have plans this weekend.) Can't wait!

Nick

Yes, Morai goes back through the portal to Malachor with Ahsoka, which is why we see Morai at the end of the last episode of season 2. However, the more interesting thing is that Morai just happened to be waiting in the World between Worlds at the Malachor portal for Ezra, which suggests she somehow had this all planned. What is Morai’s role in all this? Mel, when you watched the Episode in the Mandalorian when Ahsoka first turns up, did you notice Morai was there too? I ask, as I am not sure if you knew about Morai then? Gosh, Mel: I had mentally prepared myself for you watching the last episode this Friday not today! 🤯

Nick

In fact I should watch all the sequels again - this Easter or summer, when I have more time. They should have had Dave Filoni involved from the start! I actually liked Rey as a character.

Saltire

Enjoy it Melissa, its a good finale! :) And yes Nick, we do see Morai above Ahsoka in Mando as well. I remember watching another reactor on that shot say "oh there's an owl" before it clicked and she got excited! :D

Saltire

Yes I think I need to revisit them soon too once more. Seen them through two or three times now, but always eager to watch more Star Wars, even stuff I've seen multiple times (like Rebels here lol!). I had no issue really with Rey as well (though I can agree about how quickly she was able to use her powers, especially that Mind Trick in TFA on James Bond at that!), and the acting in the sequels, is the best in all the films; the actors did superbly - especially Adam Driver - with the material given; even Mark Hamill, who was grumpy about Luke's arc in The Last Jedi.

kamenriderhime

Yeah that is interesting about Morai, hmmmm!! Oh no I didn't notice Morai then, pretty sure I hadn't seen the Mortis eps by that point! I really need to give those eps a rewatch! OMG I know, I usually do them Friday, but had to do them earlier this week because of my weekend plans. WOW is all I have to say :'D Saltire - it was amazing! Hahahaha that's so fun about the other reactor!!!!

Nick

Yes I need to rewatch the first two seasons of the Mandalorian before the next season starts. Glad you liked the finale, Mel: I think it’s awesome!

Saltire

Just watched your reaction to that Mando episode, you do notice a bird in it, but obviously you were unaware of the story with it. Its really cool to see Morai in live action. I wonder if we will see it in Ahsoka's series (I presume so). Yeah the finale is great, can't wait to see your reaction and then discuss everything about it and the future series on Monday. :)
