Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 3 of The Bad Batch!  OMG CODYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  No way!!!  Wow guys, this episode got my brain going SO much!!!  It was an excellent look at how folks are starting to realize that the Empire is not the "right" side to be on, despite it emerging out of the Republic.
Putting Cody with Crosshair was so cool - not only for the action scenes, but because Crosshair provides a perfect mirror of what a totally obedient Imperial clone looks like.  It was enough to send Cody packing, yay!!!  Wow!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The building we meet up with Rampart, Crosshair and Cody, was the very same facility used to imprison Ahsoka during her trial episodes at the end of season 5 of TCW. The clones who move away from Crosshair in the mess hall talk about the "defence recruitment bill" to be discussed in the Senate, for the phasing out of clones. So we find out that Crosshair was abandoned on Kamino for 32 rotations before being picked up, close to death. Rampart sounds so disinterested as he half-heartedly says "your loyalty is commendable". This ties in with a line in season one from Hunter: "Don't fool yourself Crosshair, all you'll be to the Empire, is a number..." On the battle memorial where Crosshair meets up with Cody, you can see all the names of fallen clones, who were from just the First Battle of Geonosis in Attack Of The Clones. It shows just how many of them were sacrficed in the first battle of the war, let alone throughout the next three years. There is so much in that short intro scene with Cody and Crosshair. Cody's armour is greyed out now to comply with the Empire, and he was the highest ranking clone in the entire Grand Army Of The Republic; now he's a mere commander tagged in with new imperial recruits. He mentions about the Bad Batch being more independent and abandoning the Empire, and Crosshair doesn't like that line as he wants to be a cog in the imperial machine so hits back that regs left too and that they are traitors like the Jedi. He's still buying into that, to fit his world view. Dooku is mentioned again by the ex-Separatist governor of this world. A lot of what she spoke about where he saw the republic corruption was true, even if she didn't know what he truly was at that point. Its good she brings up Mina Bonteri to highlight how some of the Separatists just wanted the war to end. We also have to remember that these people didn't know Dooku was a Sith either so are still loyal to him as well, even with him now gone. They were played by him just as the Republic side was being played by Palpatine. The battle droids and droideka's are really formidable this episode; they have been reprogrammed well by these inhabitants to try to fend off the Empire, and they have assassin droids as backup. Note however that the Empire doesn't send in their new shiny TK troopers to deal with this; no the clones are brought in as they are expendable and will also get the job done. This episode is like a dark, warped episode of Clone Wars where the clones are the baddies and the droids and separatists the goodies. As you say Mel, its a topsy-turvy world now. Crosshair shooting at that tank and not even moving as its firing back, awaiting the perfect shot, then his one shot taking out four droids with the puck, is so good. Such a shame he's on the wrong side. I have a confession. I've never liked Cody. I've always been biased against him since he nonchalantly shot at Obi-Wan right after getting Order 66 in Episode III. All this was of course before we knew about the inhibitor chips; but even with all that, and watching him throughout Clone Wars, as he tangles along with Rex, Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka; that scene in the film always trumped anything he did for me. Here though, we see that he thinks the Empire can be a force for good post-war if it can bring about order in a restless galaxy; as he mentions to the kid and her mother that they are there to help, and to the troublesome separatist governor. And he lays down his gun to bring her round; thats something he picked up from Obi-Wan who was called The Negotiator and always tried to find a peaceful solution to things. After he brings her round though, then the imperial governor acting like a despot and that Crosshair all too easily kills her; that he sees he's on the wrong side. And again as he's leaving, he looks to see his clones move off, and the TK troopers come in as the new regime he and his brothers have set up, get their nefarious claws into this place. Then in the final scene with him and Crosshair, he mentions about having to live with the things he's done; which one is a clear referral about shooting down Obi-Wan, his loyal general, and thinks he killed him. He makes a choice to get out now, before going further down this destructive path. And I have to say, I warmed to him with this episode. Crosshair wakes up early (or did he not sleep?) and it looks like he's dwelling on things. He's summoned by Rampart and once again he doesn't refer to Cody by his name, only his number. Crosshair seethes at the Admiral's dig about clones leaving when around him; but he follows orders and is off on another soulless solitary mission, a long way from his fellow Bad Batchers... What an episode.

First, nice timing releasing a Star Wars reaction on May the 4th. Was that on purpose or did you just fall into it by accident? 🙃 Wow, you really went on a shpiel here - lol, I say that when I wrote pages of comments in the RWBY Se room but you literally looked like your brain was doing the same thing mine does on that show. I do have a few thoughts, but it’s really a bold and fresh move to actually film an episode completely from the Imperial point of view and flip the script on its head. It’s definitely adding another layer to the story. Here’s what stood out to me during the episode, though: Remember that throwaway line about the Defense RecruitmentAct the regular clones were talking about at the start? The issues with the clones and their individuality are what is going to inevitably push that through and create more Stormtroooers. Obviously, being on S4 of Clone Wars I don’t know everything about Cody but I do know he’s a mainstay with the main cast’s group, so I can’t really speak as well to his complete character as of today. There’s one thing that gives the audience a bit of a leg up on the rest of the episode, and I’m not sure it was the best story choice to leave in after the fact: the initial scene where the Imperials try to take over the first time and are captured. If you recall, the rest of the episode whenever the clones are given a briefing the Imperial commanders refer to the opposition simply as “insurgents,” and provide no context whatsoever. It isn’t until they’re in the room with Ames at the end that Crosshair and Cody get the full scope of what’s happening. It does feel like a Clone Wars mission, and yet, it doesn’t… and that confusion you’re feeling is completely intentional. They want you to see things from the perspective Cody and Crosshair are - if you’re having mixed feelings about how to feel, imagine how confused those clones are in the same situation. The thing about the clones is they also have enough independent function and well, they have eyes. When Cody told that pair “we’re here to help,” I don’t think that was the reaction he was expecting. And after the whole exchange with Groton, Ames and Crosshair in the tower, I think that’s the first time he started to understand what was really going on. Crosshair has a condition I like to call “tunnel vision,” which means he’s laser focused on what he’s told. The clone has no empathy but it also seems he lacks a bit in the logical department. As Cody said, “we have to live with the choices we make,” something I don’t think Crosshair has ever bothered to consider - what will the result of the actions produce? That’s probably why Cody went AWOL. It’s like that one Freelancer flashback in RvB when one of them asks the other, “we’re the good guys. Right?” Even in the Empire, “good” is a matter of perspective. It’s easy to knee jerk react to the Empire as bad because we know it’s rotten at the core - but at the end of the day not everyone who serves it is, and it’s up to them to make their own decisions with the information they’re presented with.

I could honestly talk about this episode forever and still never do it justice. This is my favorite episode of this series. Until this episode we didn't know what happened to Cody after Order 66. In Legends he became a Drill Sargent and trained new Stormtroopers on Kamino and hated his life. And we never saw him in Rebels. And now he's AWOL. I love that he takes certain qualities from Obi-Wan, like negotiating, similar to how Rex kinda takes after Anakin with thinking outside the box. It's so interesting to have an episode like this because Cody and Crosshair are a fresh perspective of Clones who executed Order 66 and what their mindset is after that. Crosshair is all in on it partially because he believes, but also maybe he's scared of what will happen to him if he leaves. While we see that the Batch and Cody are kinda getting to him. I genuinely believe that he shot Ames, not because he believes in what the Empire is doing, but so that Cody wouldn't die. And you can tell that Crosshair is so fed up with Rampart. This dude won't even let him eat lol

Manny

Yeah this one was good but definitely conflicting

kamenriderhime

Me too lol! Wow! That's true that he's employing some Obi-Wan skills here. That's true that a lot of this is starting to get to Crosshair....also great point that he might have actually been saving Cody here! Wow. Can this poor dude finish a meal please lol?!?! What a great ep!

kamenriderhime

No kidding about the building!! Yeah, that's what I figured about the bill they were discussing, too. It makes me sick to think that Crosshair is still here after being abandoned!!! Hunter was right. I didn't even notice the names, but that's a nice touch, and proves a point about how many have been lost. It was interesting to here Dooku's name again as well as Mina Bonteri's. It's sad to think that both sides really got manipulated. Good point about the droids, and about the fact that the Empire is sending "expendable" old clone troopers to handle this :( I know, I wanted to root for Crosshair SOOOO bad during that scene haha. Oh I can see how that would color your perception of Cody! I think they've done a lot to flesh out his story since, but first impressions are hard to shake off for sure! I love that he was channeling Obi-Wan here! It's sad but eye opening to watch Cody realize the way things are really headed here. Awww I can see how you warmed up to him here....he clearly has a LOT of regret for what he did to Obi-Wan (especially since he thinks he killed him). Crosshair doing the same stuff, different day, watching the clones getting disregarded more and more...it's gotta be getting to him!!! This was such an ep indeed!!!

kamenriderhime

As a matter of fact it was an accident haha, but a happy one! Thanks! Hahahaha I mean you know how it is when you have a lot to say about something you care about!!! So true about the clones' individuality making them a target to eliminate when it comes to the Empire. Wow you've really made your way in Clone Wars, nice!! I'd say you probably know a lot about him already then. Oh that's an interesting point about the first attempt and capture of the Imperials. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that conflict on how this episode felt lol. I can't imagine how confused the clones are :/ It was sad to watch Cody start to realize the writing on the wall, wasn't it. I think that's exactly why Cody went AWOL and it's a great point that Crosshair probably isn't considering the long term ramifications of his actions right now. It does seem like he's not fully processing the whole picture. OMG it's totally like that line from RvB!! So true about the individuals in the Empire and their reasons/motivations all being different - some good, some bad. It's a huge statement on war in general isn't it!

Saltire

Well we spoke about Crosshair and his choice at the end of last season so I don't want to go over old ground, but he's seeing it now for himself just what being an imperial - especially a clone imperial - will entail. I will be interested to see your thoughts on the next episode with him, as its my favourite episode in all of Bad Batch so far; and it has Dee Bradley Baker's favourite new clone in it too. Can't wait for you to get to that one!!! Though Crosshair isn't likeable, he's the most interesting of Clone Force 99 for me, as a lot of his thoughts aren't spoken aloud, so its up to us to think of what he must be feeling in these moments, or otherwise like when he shot the separatist here in cold blood. That and he's like Superman with a rifle so is endlessly cool! I kind of want to see Cody meet Obi-Wan just to give him a bit of peace now (though at this time Obi-Wan is going through it himself as he settles into life on Tatooine). It kind of makes me think about Rex thinking about Anakin, when we first see him later in Rebels.

kamenriderhime

That's so true! We're seeing the results of his choice. Wow, I have a lot to look forward too! I agree, he is very interesting and fascinating to analyze. Hahaha Superman with a rifle is a great way to put it!!! Aww, that would be nice actually, I'd love to see Cody get that closure. I know....the Rex/Anakin thing is just devastating!

2023-05-10 03:08:50 This is top Bad Batch for me. Such a deep episode that really successfully pulls so many threads together of the rich history already built into this universe. Seeing the place where Ahsoka was imprisoned, just before she left the Jedi order, is cool but at the same time brings back all the negative emotions of those episodes. The music at the end was spot on for adding just the right tone. Some of the visuals added wonderfully to that atmosphere too. Cody’s return and seeing the conflicts within him was quite something to behold, especially the hints that one of the things he has to live with might be his belief that he was involved in killing ObiWan. It’s awesome to find out he went AWOL after this. Will he be seen again in later episodes, or the last season? Seeing a separatist stronghold now being screwed by the Empire is a reminder of how everyone was played/ used, as is the mention of The Defence Recruitment Bill. I have never had much time for Crosshair, and his actions this episode have not raised him in my estimation. Still, it was interesting that at the end of the episode he seemed to want to work with Cody again. The bottom line is that he clearly feels isolated and also knew Cody from before Bad Batch. Despite wanting to fit in with the empire, he presumably still feels out of place: even the other Clones still around avoid him - even moving away when he sits at a dining table next to them. And of course the empire is not exactly giving out a warm, welcoming vibe to him. One of the interesting things about Bad Batch is how it reveals there was clearly no shortage of people in the Republic that were very willing to serve the newly formed Empire, and clearly many are all pretty callous, arrogant and ruthless. Still, that’s maybe a reflection of ‘human nature’ than specifically the Republic. Anyway, a fantastic episode, but as you said, Mel, for much more than the fighting.

Interesting question about Clones who were directly involved in order 66: did the effect of the chips eventually wear off, and if so did the Clones then question the correctness and morality of the act they participated in? Or perhaps the Clones generally remained unquestioning of this act? It's awesome! And wow, I didn't even connect that that was the same place, but that's such a callback. The music and visuals were right on point here. I really, really hope we see Cody again! Clearly he is dealing with a lot here, the Obi-Wan issue included like you said. That's what I'm wondering about the effects of Order 66! It's all still a bit vague so I guess you can infer what makes sense. I do like the idea that those who were more directly involved were more affected, and so they questioned it more afterwards. I hear you about Crosshair, he can be so frustrating! But this episode definitely stirred some feelings about him in many ways. He really doesn't belong at all here. That's a great point about how many in the Republic fit so well with the Empire. And sadly, it is a poignant comment on human nature, as is much of the saga in general! Yes, such a great one!!! Glad you agree!!

Cody

This is one of my favorite episodes. The action is top notch, Crosshair shooting down the barrel of the tank is one of the coldest things I’ve seen in Star Wars, the team up with Cody is awesome, and the story is just amazing. Cody’s journey this episode is just perfect. The slight way he reacts when Crosshair mentions the Jedi, how he reacts to Crosshair killing the governor, seeing their replacements march in as they leave, and then talking about living with their decisions. It’s just perfect. You can really feel without him saying anything towards it how much pain he probably feels having fired on Obi-Wan, despite him immediately turning without a struggle like Rex did during Order 66. And you can see even though he followed orders without question how Crosshair was affected a bit by Cody leaving at the end. Cody’s one of the few regs that he seems to respect a bit, so him leaving means something. All that on top of being left behind on Kamino for a *month*, you can see that very subtly Crosshair is maybe reconsidering everything as well.

kamenriderhime

It was fantastic right?! I love Cody's journey! They played it all so well in terms of his reactions, feelings, etc. It was a great way to flesh things out for him since he did turn so quickly. They also did a great job showing Crosshair's feelings here too! I can definitely see the wheels turning here for him!!
