Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 12 of The Bad Batch!  WHOA!!!!!!!!!  A Crosshair ep like no other...!!  We've seen it slowly being laid out before him that the Empire does NOT care - in fact, it would seem they're adversed to clones at this point.  And this episode was the cherry on top.  Working side by side with Mayday and realizing just how bad things had gotten, Crosshair finally makes what I would call a good choice!  But where did he end up?!  Are they trying to make him a "true believer"?!?!  I'm scared to find out...!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Straight from the off, we all want Lieutenant Nolan killed in the most brutal way. His utter disregard for clones gets our hackles up! So we meet Commander Mayday - Dee Bradley Baker's (and mine also) favourite new clone. Straight from the off you can tell he's been there and seen it all, and imbues authority and confidence in his command, unlike Lt. Nolan. Mayday technically outranks Nolan by at least two ranks, but with the clones now getting phased out he doesn't have any authority under the Empire, and so is left here on this iceball along with other clones. I love the introductory scene between Mayday and Crosshair. When Mayday gives his name and expects Crosshair to tell him his, he does, but after a long pause. Clones don't have names under the Empire, he's CT-9904 and has gone under that for a while now. When Mayday is fixing the mine and speaks with Crosshair about his former squad, and Crosshair mentions "they're gone...", there is almost a tinge of sadness in that line delivery. His brothers are on another path, and he is here... Best episode of the show, period. When Crosshair lifts up Mayday to carry him, it breaks me. All this time, from Clone Wars, he's been saying he'll leave behind his brothers; but in Mayday he saw not a reg, but himself, a grumpy but pragmatic clone hero, a good soldier who followed orders, and instead of dying like the hero he was, froze to death protecting equipment for his replacements, all for a regime that doesn't care and classes him as an expendable obsolete item. Second episode of TCW : "we are clones sir, we are meant to be expendable" | Plo Koon : "not, to me". This is the clones reward for ridding the galaxy of the Jedi and winning the war... They get back to the base and Nolan refuses Mayday help. After he passes and Nolan's message about all the clones being expendable, the message gets through to Crosshair. He looks up at the vulture overhead. Its coming for him, its coming for all clones now. Ahsoka's bird, Morai is a guardian angel for her and helps her; my interpretation is this thing is the opposite, its an omen of all the clones fates. Crosshair finally snaps and kills Nolan; he'll be a part of this no longer, his brothers were right and he finally sees this. Then when Crosshair now sees the error of his ways, the Empire doesn't despose him but brings him back in, to do god knows what nefarious thing to him, and sink him further into hell. This is his punishment for all the wrong decisions he's made. What an episode, its just so bleak, there is no hope at all here.

When you really want to use swear words but have an image to maintain! haha

I’m beginning to wonder what the screening process is for some of these people the Empire puts in positions of authority - “So, just how much of a jerk can you be? You’re prejudiced and stoic? You’re hired.” 😂 The bird circling in the episode is tagged as an ice vulture in the subtitles. So the deal is, raiders have been constantly attacking the outpost and the clones for the gear (that they could’ve been using all this time but didn’t know they had), by sneaking through a tunnel that went under the sensor perimeter (it’s where Crosshair and Mayday were chasing them back.) You were asking what happened to Crosshair at the beginning - well, the easy answer here is he was looking through a nightscope on his sniper rifle because it was dark and a blizzard, and then they blew up a tank or something right where he was looking. It’s the same effect as if you got night vision goggles on and someone unexpectedly suddenly turned on the bright room light where you were standing. All those cracks about dead weight… and then Crosshair ends up carrying Mayday all the way back anyway. Maybe there’s hope for him yet… but sheesh… we had to send in the most intolerant, insufferable individual we could fine and Crosshair had to watch him die to actually start getting the hint. Also where Crosshair woke up… it would seem he’s now in the same facility where Nala Se is being kept. So it appears a lot of threads are starting to come together… We all know it’s all Palpatine’s fault, but now that the Zillo Beast is in custody, how about we invite the Emperor over… FOR DINNER? 🤭

Ugh, that's their requirements alright!! Ice vulture, hmm. Right, I started to put together what the conflict was throughout the ep, thanks for clarifying. Ohhh, I thought Crosshair was having an adverse reaction to killing, your explanation makes more sense! The dead weight comment really came back to bite him didn't it! It took FOREVER but Crosshair might finally be coming around - but yeah, it took this to finally drive it home. Right, interesting that he should end up in the place we saw last ep. Those threads are definitely starting to weave! HAHAHAHAHA that might be the one context in which I'd agree to someone "having the Emperor for dinner".....!! LOL!

Oh absolutely, Nolan was just begging to get killed lol! I liked Mayday a lot!!! So cool that he's yours and Dee Bradley Baker's favorite new clone! That's insult to injury that he technically outranks Nolan too. The intro scene was great and very telling of the background situation. I know, I saw that twinge of sadness too when Crosshair mentioned his brothers. I think you might be right about this being the best ep, it was just absolutely gut-wrenching and beautifully done! I think that Crosshair really did get to see a reflection of this entire situation in Mayday. Oof, those lines of dialogue mean even more now! To think that this is what they face after all their service. Oof, that's a really dark but valid interpretation of the bird! Crosshair finally gets it and I've gotta say, I couldn't help cheer him on in shooting Nolan!! It's sad that it took this much for him to realize that his brothers were right. In a way, he's probably worse off living to see whatever plans the Empire has for him with their mad science experiments. It was so bleak!!!!!!!!!! Part of me was relieved that Crosshair finally gets it, but the other part is just sad lol.

It’s unusual to see blood in Star Wars - especially from being shot by blaster bolts, but also more generally. And “F” their cargo indeed. Clones dying to protect stuff like this! Yes, I think the negative attitude towards the clones was probably already there with the Republic and this maybe made it easier to develop the attitude we see towards them in the Bad Batch. I have to say that watching and listening to Nolan prompted some choice short 4 letter words in my head; and I’m impressed that you avoided swearing out loud Mel, although I felt you were close this time ;-). Actually, I’ve always been impressed that you have many times managed to turn what deservedly in context might be swear words into something far more benign. Still, it would make you seem more human if you succumbed just once 😁😁 Crosshair goes up a bit in my estimation this episode both trying to save Mayday (who was very likeable) and shooting Nolan (who was utterly loathsome). The Republic wasn’t perfect, of course, and neither were the Jedi, but given the way the Empire is portrayed in the Bad Batch (and elsewhere) the expression ‘you should be careful what you wish for’ springs to mind! Love the dark electronic/ ambient music used in this episode to help create atmosphere. It reminds me a bit of the electronic music in the Tales of the Jedi episode where we see Dooku erase the planet Kamino in the Jedi archives.

There are many other interpretations of the vulture that I have been reading about that may flesh out more of the general story with Crosshair and the clones, that you may be interested in. One theory is it represents the circle of life and death, the physical death of Mayday but also a different kind of death for Crosshair. He has killed the part of him devoted to the Empire by killing the lieutenant. In this act he cleanses himself, has been reborn, and his soul has been purified. I can largely see this though he will still need to undergo penitence for some of his evil deeds he has done. Theory two : Crosshair is the vulture. "We’re soldiers — we do what needs to be done" - he's shown to be motivated by his own self-preservation. He was an elite soldier, but at this point he's nothing more than a glorified scavenger cleaning up the empire’s messes and living off whatever scraps they toss to him. He's often also portrayed a lot in the background, or perched up high as he snipes away, like a vulture awaiting an opportunity. Theory three : the Empire is the vulture, awaiting the clones to be decommissioned or killed off, for its own benefit so that it can become bigger and fatter as it can then feed on the misery it spreads across the galaxy. Theory four : Crosshair was never really the vulture, but is made to think that he is. His journey throughout this is him learning to reject this lie and discover his true nature. He captures the rest of the Bad Batch in season one but then begs them to stay with him. He saves Omega from drowning when he didn't have to. He tries to save Mayday when being told they are all cogs in the machine and expendable. In those moments, perhaps a part of his true nature is breaking through to show who he really is deep down (and I think you make that point in the episode reaction Mel). He's shown he has had no love for the Empire through all this too, despite him trying to believe its for his own good. He kills the squad member who wouldn't act out Tarkin's orders; he kills the remainder of the squad who have the Bad Batch surrounded on Kamino; he kills Nolan here. This shows how lost and twisted the Empire has made him, both through the influence of the chip and in their subsequent missions given to him. When he pauses to recall his name to Mayday, he has been hammered down into thinking he is a droid by always being referred to by his birth number. With the events that happen here, he finds his breaking point, who he is deep down is finally rejecting this. As we have said, Crosshair may not be likeable, but his journey and story is as profound as someone like Cassian Andor in his series so far, who was a parasitic worm looking out only for himself; but with everything that happens to him, he wants to 'rebel' against all that and the Empire.

Like a spit in the face! The empire would throw away anyone without a second thought and a flick of the wrist 👌

kamenriderhime

That's a good point! Seriously, I'm so done with them! I think you're right - there were signs of attitudes like this brewing in the Republic, now those sentiments are just much more accepted and touted. Hahaha I was pretty darn close to letting loose this time.....!!! I had to maintain my Jedi-like composure :P Haha I appreciate that you notice my attempt to keep the language clean, trust me I've come close!! It's something I'm working on in general to try and keep my language clean, although I have no problem with others swearing and even find it quite entertaining when done right on shows! Who knows, one day it might just be too much for me :P Yeah this definitely upped my respect for Crosshair as well. I think he always had it in him, but didn't realize the severity of the situation until this one. I hear you about the Empire! Certainly there were lots of downfalls in the Jedi and Republic, but wow, the Empire is just the worst! The music was really amazing right??? It stood out! I can definitely see how it resembled the music from that scene in Tales of the Jedi!

Nick

Actually, swearing reminds me of this. Have you seen/ heard the comedian Eddie Izzard’s skit about the Death Star Canteen? It was originally performed to a live audience but some content creator has used stop motion with Lego figures (including one of Darth Vader with his red light sabre) with Eddie Izzard’s voiceover. It’s absolutely hilarious 😀. This is a link to it (about 3 min. long) https://youtu.be/Sv5iEK-IEzw

kamenriderhime

Oooh, those are some interesting theories!!! The death/rebirth one makes quite a bit of sense. It also kinda makes sense that it would be symbolic for Crosshair. Oooh, the Empire being the vulture definitely carries some weight!! Oof, I think that fourth theory hits the hardest though!! Wow! I totally agree - he might not be a character to root for but they have done an excellent job making his character interesting with tons of depth. I'm really curious to see where they go from here!!

kamenriderhime

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Omg!!!! That was amazing!!! Thanks for the laughs!!! It kinda reminds me of Robot Chicken Star Wars, some of favorite content of all time, which I rewatch from time to time!!!! XD

Nick

Glad you liked it 😁Also thanks for the Robot Chicken Star Wars suggestion: I think Ive heard of it before but never seen any: I’ll check it out!

kamenriderhime

It was great haha! Oh yes I think you'd enjoy it if you enjoy some over the top, irreverent but also very Star Wars-themed humor!!! I believe you can find compilation videos on YouTube!!! For reference, my favorite is the one with Jar Jar and Vader, it gets me every time XD XD XD
