***HEADPHONE WARNING LOL***

Hey everyone! I'm back with season 2, episode 4 of Legend of Vox Machina!  WHAT?!?!!?!?!  Ok I literally had to replay that whole scene because WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?!?!  At first I honestly thought Vax had succeeded in trading his life for Vex's......but now he's like a Raven avatar?!  And he had to battle to unlock the full Raven powers?!?!?  Also, our new friends may not have started out that way, but I'm glad we were able to part amicably.  And we got a new little pocket for Trinket the Bear!!!  Also BABY TRINKET, AHHHHHHH!!!!  Could you hear my heart and brain exploding at once in the reaction lol???  Cannot wait for more!  Great ep - enjoy!  ~ MH

Hi Hime :) Believe me, people will be waiting for your reaction to Episode 3 and Vex's death. You absolutely have to see the campaign version of Vex's death scene, Vax's voice actor, Liam O'Brien, did a great job shooting that scene knowing that if I remember correctly what I heard, he had lost a loved one shortly before and he is really very close to Laura Bailey the voice actress of Vex (it's not for nothing that they play a brother and a sister). Now for the explanation, by asking to take the place of Vex, Vax intrigued the matron of ravens, so she broke their twin connection to offer him the opportunity to become her champion. Which he becomes by defeating Purvan later. Wearing the vestige gave him visions showing him the way (when he sees the other sphinx), but also dating from a more distant time and a certain connection with the kingdom of the dead. What we see at the end, for me, is surely a moment from the past of the little house, which also serves to reinforce for Vax his new role as champion of the matron of ravens but also surely the role of the matron as goddess of death. Now for the little additional explanation. If Kiki is so sensitive to Kash, it's because Marisha Ray, her voice actress, is a bit of a fan of Will Friedle from what I heard. So it's more Marisha who is embarrassed by her meeting with Will than Kiki by Kash lol. Grog's race can't normally have facial hair, which is why he's so happy to have a beard. The person watching them at the end is Dr. Ripley who was in season 1, she had tortured Percy before being imprisoned by the Briarwoods couple and losing a hand. We heard about her again when Percy bought some powder, now you know she's watching them. And just for more personal information, MY favorite film of all time is The Crow with Brandon Lee, so the crow is also my favorite animal, I often associate it with my protagonists in my stories. So having Vax as the champion of the death goddess symbolized by ravens, with a pretty classy armor makes me like him even more ^^.

So, the thing is it looked like the Matron of Ravens was about to take Vex but Vax yelled at her to take him instead, so it kind of seems like an “exchange” was made. Vax just isn’t clear on what exactly the parameters were. Meanwhile, the two troublemakers decided to turn this into a quite literal version of Squid Game (see what I did there?) and then act like they just stepped out to the local McDonald’s because the Filet-O-Fish was on sale. Wait, Friday’s tomorrow. As far as what happened to Vax in the scene, I don’t know if you quote heard it, but after he “defeated” Purvan he was told by the knight, “hail the new champion.” And it looks like the thread that once connected him and Vex is now connected to the Matron instead. Oh, by the way, I thought the headphone warning was for your incessant Trinket fawning session until I saw you jump out of your chair - we don’t see you get that got too often. Hang on… how do I make this into a GIF, cause this needs to be saved for posterity. 👀😁 I obviously have already seen the season so I have to be a little bit coy about what I can and can’t say. But hope you’re having fun so far! Where will the dice roll next time?

Manny

You guys weren’t kidding about this season. We got Vex back but I for sure don’t know what all this means. Poor Vax haven’t to go through all this now. I feel for him right now.

Liam did a fantastic job in the episode. I felt every emotion. Thank you for sharing. 😮‍💨

Thanks, that reminds me that it would be easier if I shared the video link for Melissa to watch ^^'. https://youtu.be/0AuHfXwTY1M

That's what I thought too, I just thought he'd die in her place though! HAHAHAH Squid Game? Fish monster? I see what you did there :P Now I want a filet o fish, dang it!! Right, that's what it seemed like - he's the new champ. Hahahaha I realized after I probably should have been more specific about where the headphone warning was at :P And if you didn't think I was gonna fawn over Trinket, I don't know what to tell you :P I know right, that REALLY got me!!! Hahahaha I'm gonna get memed!!!! I'm having a lot of fun and am really invested!!! Talk about a roll of the dice...literally!!!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas :) OH MAN!!! I'm crying all over again over that clip :O Thanks for sharing it! I agree, Manny, that Liam did an awesome job! Laura's reaction though....!! That's so sweet that they're close in real life! Gotcha, so that was their twin connection being cut, that's what I thought! So he's the new champion. Ok cool, thanks for explaining that all for me! That's crazy about the visions. Ohhhh that's what that vision was! Hahaha well I cannot blame Marisha for that, I have loved Will Friedle for a long, long time! Ohhhhh that's even better about the beard then! Oh thanks for clearing that up about Ripley, I totally missed that, sorry! Oh that's such a great film!!! And a great animal to have as a fave!! Yeah he was pretty classy already, but now that he's ravened up, he's even better!!!

Again, I haven't watched Critical Role, but in Game mechanics terms, what Vax did is often how a character becomes a sorcerer in-game. Sorcerers differ from Wizards in that they have a powerful otherworldly Patron who grants them magical powers but basically you sell your soul and are the servant of that Patron in the material realm. You can still pursue your own interests but if the Patron needs a favor, you're at their beck & call if you want to maintain access to your powers. Vax feels like a Rogue who is multiclassing and taking a level of Sorcerer on top of his Rogue levels. The Sorcerer adventurers I've played with are cursed and tortured souls who bear a heavy burden. Vax agreed, in essence, to sell his soul to this Death Goddess in exchange for letting Vex live....and thus was "gifted" the mysterious armor.

As someone who's played Rangers before, animal companions can be quite helpful but keeping them alive and out of harms way is like half your job as a Ranger.

kamenriderhime

Interesting! Come to think of it, I feel like maybe I've seen that once or twice as well back when I played D&D. So it was an exchange, thanks for clarifying! Oof, sounds tough to keep those animals safe, I'm glad they got the little pocket for Trinket!!!

Cody

I think you mixed up Sorcerer and Warlock. Warlocks have a Patron that gives them their magic, Sorcerers are born with the ability to use magic.

kamenriderhime

Ohhh interesting! I was still learning when I stopped playing, so I'm not good at sorting these details out! Thanks :D

So some more changes from the campaign, in the game I’m pretty sure that the monster fight happened before the Vestige, and it was just a random monster in the temple. I’m very much okay with this change cause Vax against the monster was awesome! That shot when he flew into the air and the Raven Mother was in the ceiling behind him gave me chills! I believe the monster itself was changed for copyright reasons, in the game it was a Beholder, a giant floating eyeball with several eyestalks on top of it that each do different things when they look at you. How Vex died is the same though, they didn’t detect the trap cause they didn’t roll high enough, Percy touched the armor and it instakilled Vex. I believe Vax offering himself to the Raven Queen was also the deciding factor in saving Vex in the game. The way Critical Role does resurrection in game is that they’ll have three party members make some kind of offering or perform some kind of skill check as part of the ritual, and depending on what they do it’ll lower the dice roll required for the ritual to work. So yeah, offering yourself in place of your twin probably had a big impact on that. I believe Zahra did give the amulet to Vex in game, which the whole party called a Pokéball cause that’s basically what it was XD it was basically to keep Trinket safe during combat, cause otherwise it was really hard to keep him up.

kamenriderhime

Oh that's interesting! Yeah I think the change up was well done! They do such a great job translating this stuff into drama/visual storytelling. No kidding about the copyright issues. I saw the clip of Vex "dying" during the game, wow! That makes sense about the offering then. Hahahah it's totally a Pokeball for Trinket!!! I'm glad we can keep him safe now :D
