Hey everyone! I'm back with the second ep in this four-part miniseries!!  OMG!!!!  This one was even better than the last one!  WOW was it creepy, suspenseful, messed up, and just absolutely impossible to take my eyes away from!  Again, twists upon twists in this one.  And I love that so far, all the focus is on the supernatural and not on Stands at all (with the exception of Heaven's Door, of course).  This might have been my fave of the bunch and that's really saying something!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

Hi Hime :) How to start Spooky season well indeed. Koichi asking to learn Italian is something that will come up later, you will see for yourself. Curiosity kills the cat, but in Jojo he comes back as a plant lol The style of this first OAV is quite close to the style of part 5, it will give you a taste like that. The twist is one of Araki's specialties, don't forget it. That Rohan's ghost stories have them is quite normal. Small detail, Gunpei's T-shirt in the second OAV has "SBR" on it, it's a nod to part 7, Steel Ball Run. This second OAV is also one of my favorites among the 4, with the last one, for a certain reason that you will see for yourself.

My favorite thing about Rohan might be how much of a self aware commentary he is on Araki and his own obsessive tendencies.

2023-10-02 20:51:53 Hello Melissa, you finally got around to the Rohan OVA's. They fit very well with the Halloween season to follow. Episode 16 is really quite creepy and also disturbed me a bit at first. I'm not going to lie, when I first watched the 2021 OVA's, I didn't really like this episode. I don't know where my head was at the time, but I didn't quite get the plot twist and for some reason I wasn't ready to go with it, but rewatching it now, it was sick and I love the ending. The artstyle in it always fascinates me too. It reminds me more and more of Araki's current style which really looks absolutely fantastic. No wonder some of his work has been exhibited at the Louvre. Rohan looks simply beautiful in his new outfits in this series. Just for your information: Almost all OVA`s take place in a different year. Episode 16 takes place about 2 years after DiU (2001) and Episode 2 takes place in 2006. Rohan was really 20 years old in Part 4. Only for some reason, in the series, the outward appearance of the characters is not changed so that they still look like students. Only Rohan looks a bit older. This also confused me a lot in the beginning. Episode 2 is even a bit creepier than the episode before it. I also can never watch it while eating or having already eaten something. The fact that the woman drinks her boyfriend's blood is simply repugnant to me. In this episode, we also see a lot of familiar faces again. Even Akira and Tanami. There's a joke in the fandom that they don't show Josuke's face because this is Rohan's story and he hates Josuke, but in reality, according to Toshiyuki Kato, one of the directors of the OVAs, Araki believes that "two protagonists can't coexist in the same work." And that's why both the manga and the OVAs don't show his face even in the original scenes. I'm curious how you'll find the other two episodes.

Araki must’ve felt he wanted a new challenge or something. “My anime isn’t crazy enough? Let’s tell some scary stories, then, I’m sure I can come up with something.” I forgot to say this in the last one, but while we’re on the subject of Heaven’s Door, mind writing in I can speak Japanese? 👀 When Rohan said he was bankrupt and staying with Koichi I started to wonder if this is was after his house got burned or not. It’s clearly a different day than the previous episode, as Koichi wasn’t there from the start. The horror trope here is kind of some innocent mistakes lead to a tragedy. First Naoko has to get Gunpei to leave, and also break up with him, but she really doesn’t want to - then he thinks she’s just teasing her and playing hard to get. Without previous context, it’s hard to know if this was a regular dynamic or not. Either way, she does hit him first, and yes, he absolutely shouldn’t have hit back either, but neither one is in the right here. People do stuff all the time they don’t intend to when they get emotional, and this escalated quickly. So they’re both making errors they won’t be able to reverse. But I think the specter was probably already manipulating the situation at that point, right up to the golf club. Never really did like golf, I’d rather play video games. You know, i was wondering if you were going to survive the blood gush that is this episode - you doing all right, over there? I think the specter caused Shuichi (the fiancé) to hallucinate because he couldn’t see what the room really looked like - and Naoko had to keep her mouth there so he wouldn’t see the blood pouring into the floorboards. As for what happened later, here’s my understanding - and this is already weird enough - Gunpei fathered a child with Naoko as a corpse after being possessed by the specter. The specter went from Gunpei’s body into the body of the child Rohan meant. The specter than tried to possess Rohan by killing the girl in front of him - because that was what gave it the ultimate pleasure. But Rohan was fast enough with the pen to undo that and erase all memory of himself. And the kid just wanted to know if she would marry a handsome man… in other words the specter is looking to reproduce and commit suicide in front of somebody again. You know, maybe this area isn’t the best place for a mountain resort after all… 😅 …boy Naoko disposes a lot of corn syrup doesn’t she? 😬

Uh that was so disturbed. That’s the type of gore that’ll have you thinking about it for days. Man Rohan has seen some stuff. It’s no wonder his works are so good. 📖 🖊

kamenriderhime

You know what, I'd never even thought of that, but I've heard he's possibly Araki's self-insert character and I can totally see it lol.

kamenriderhime

Right?!!?! That was soooo messed up, definitely not getting over that one any time soon! He really has! Talk about fuel for the imagination!!!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) Yay spooky season! Oh interesting about Koichi! HAHAHAHA on this show, curiosity merely helps the cat to evolve :P Ohhhhh wow, I'm excited that's the style for Part 5!! So true about the twists! Ohhhh I was wondering if SBR was a reference to anything, that's awesome! Interesting about your rankings, I'll be curious to hear why you love the last part (aside from the obvious that it was so good lol)!!!!

kamenriderhime

Hi Bellana!! :) They're so perfect for Halloween, right?! I can see why it freaked you out a whole lot at first, it was really disturbing alright! The art style is fantastic and I can't wait to see more of this style in later parts! Ohhh thanks for clearing that up about the timeline! I'm glad I'm not the only one who wondered why everyone else was still in high school but Rohan was older lol. Oh well! Ohhh the second episode, with the blood scene, is really REALLY intense! It truly is disgusting! Yes, more familiar faces! Ohhhh is that why we never saw Josuke? That's so interesting, especially since many parts have protagonists from other parts in them too lol. I really liked the other two eps as well, and I can't wait to share my reactions to them tomorrow!!! ^_^

kamenriderhime

Hahahaha like seriously, was he trying to top himself on the craziness??? Oh heck yes, I'm next in line after you to get the Japanese language Heaven's Doored onto me :P Right, I was wondering if the house had something to do with it too. According to other comments, this one actually takes place in 2006! That's true, the trope here is accidents I guess? I mean, he probably should have let her go if he didn't wanna get smacked, but yeah, I can see how she's not perfect since technically she's sort of two-timing the fiancee (although that doesn't sound like the happiest situation either). True, I think it was fated by the specter at that point! I've never tried golf but I wonder if I'd be as bad at it as I am at video games??? :P OMG the blood gush was sooooooo gross, it definitely had me feeling queasy! That sounds like a pretty accurate way to sum up what happened, wow! Yeah, the specter's just going on and on doing its thing....!!! Hahahaha yeah let's not mess with these mountains!!! Oh man, I really hope they never have a plumbing issue because that is one surprise I don't think their handyman would be ready for....!!!!
