Hey everyone!  Here I am with the eighth ep of Oshi no Ko!!!!  Wow, so we went ahead and wrapped up the reality dating show, complete with a happy ending for Aqua and Akane!  But their real life relationship is more complicated, what with Aqua wanting to keep her around to help with his investigation and all.  Her detective skills are AMAZING by the way!  Dang!  We also get a little more info from the producer, but sadly nothing all that concrete.  It is interesting that she went to the same theater as Akane though.  And now we have a new candidate for our idol group!  Will MEM be our third member??  Guess we'll find out!  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Now that we spent last week basically holding an in session class discussion, the show decided to pull back the reins and return to a bit more of a quirky and lighter theme - it already said what it needed to. Kana’s observations on Akane are interesting, as she comments she’s already the top star for her company, and puts a lot of time, effort and thought into each role she’s researching. Obviously, Ai in this case, is no exception to the rule for her - this is just how she works. She’s even able to replicate AI’s “magnetism,” the way the original was able to draw in an audience - in some ways, you could call her a very good mimic. But she’s SO good that even Yuki and MEM have noticed - she’s thrown Aqua completely for a loop. That’s not something that happens. When they try to get the two to confront it in front of the camera - Yuki immediately realizes that Aqua has stopped acting. After he leaves, they ask Akane how she feels about this turn of events, and would she return his feelings if they turn out to be serious. She is honest enough to say she really is interested in pursuing a relationship with him if the opportunity presents itself. Naturally, this all gets caught on tape, and Kana is having none of it - she’s an expert at lying to others but she can’t notice that she’s also in the process of lying to herself about how she feels as she tries to slander the show and its genre. Aqua is trying to come to terms with what Ai IS - first, she was his idol - and then his mother. It’s been said that when males are looking for a potential interest, they are attracted to qualities in a woman that might be similar to those of their mother - so Akane’s portrayal of Ai is probably taking a teenage boy who’s already confused enough about his relationships and adding a whole new layer of complexity to the situation. Lana, of course, is now subtly hearing everyone around her talk about the show and can’t get away from it… until Aqua shows up and asks her to skip school - her reaction’s a little bit uh… well, it’s kind of amazing just how much Aqua doesn’t read into it. The strange thing is they end up playing baseball, but I kind of like the metaphor - it’s kind of like trying to bounce thoughts or ideas back and forth by catching a ball. Although Kana’s quite a rookie - I mean she does use the words “it’s my first time doing this with you!” Boy it’s a good thing the gossip magazines didn’t get that one and run with it out of context. Part of me was asking if they were rehearsing a certain scene from Attack on Titan, though. 😉 Aqua admits he sees his co stars as co workers and they get along just fine - but he doesn’t have to care about what he’s doing with Kana - which equally ticks her off and pleases her at the same time. (This is why guys have a hard time reading women sometimes… there can be a lot of competing emotions going on in their head 😂) She is forward enough to ask what kind of girl Aqua’s type IS: (Hey, Todo, is that you?) He isn’t too sure himself. He has all the memories from his previous life as Gorou - and now he’s gone through the stages of growing again, so he’s not sure if he identifies more with his previous life or his current one. Which persona is he? He does admit that he does seem to be attracted somewhat to girls slightly older than him - which gets Kana’s hopes up - until she realizes that Akane also fits that description. Akane is actually grateful for Aqua’s help (not just the obvious things, of course), but the idea to create a fake persona to help shield herself. Aqua asks her how she’s managed to interpret the role so we’ll, and this is when Akane reveals her knack for deducting things about people. Mind you, she does not actually KNOW that Ai had a child in secret and that he’s standing right next to her - it’s an inference she made to connect the dots to her behavior. Nevertheless, she might’ve gotten Aqua’s admiration for her portrayal… but now she has his attention. The show wraps up and Akane and Aqua are the only two who “get together” on screen - Aqua feels like while he’s not “falling” for her because of her portrayal, she is too valuable to him to let go… so she accepts his on screen courtship, much to a certain redhead’s disgust. Everyone at the wrap party wants to know if they’ll stay together after the show - they don’t know, themselves - in fact, Yuki speaks for a lot of them when she says as young entertainers there hasn’t been much opportunity for a social or personal life, much less any relationships. The show is for a lot of them, their first “interaction” with a potential love interest, even though it’s a show. The producer tells them what happens from here is their choice. Some couples will stay together, some will break up. It depends totally on their decisions, just like real life. It’s ironic that he’s the one who says “rotten grown ups will toss you aside” but then again, he just proved his point last episode. Speaking of rotten grownups, Aqua meets with Kaburagi (the producer) because he held up his end of the bargain. He lets Aqua know about the stir his video caused, and how close his mother’s company came to being sued - and more than likely put out of business. Corporations don’t care about one girl’s livelihood - they only care about their profit margins and the bottom line. Aqua, fortunately, was shrewd enough that he did everything inside the contract stipulations so they can’t legally touch him. He’s invited out the following week for his “reward.” Akane wants to know what she is to Aqua and Aqua plays it straight with her - at this time he doesn’t see her as a romantic interest, which actually kind of hurts her initially - but then when he tells her he’s very interested in her acting that helps her deal with the initial rejection and makes her happy. At least he’s honest enough to tell her what he’s feeling. Either way they’ll need to keep up appearances - and Skane notes that Yuki and Nobu started dating for real even though she rejected him on set. More fuel to the “things aren’t always what they seem” crowd. Akane agrees to the cover, to help both of their jobs, at least for the time being. As the party breaks up, Aqua walks home with MEM - it starts out with her trying to pry about his level if interest in Akane but when she lets it slip she wanted to be an idol - it so happens Aqua might actually be just the person she’s looking for to forward that idea…

I love how MEM speaks wistfully of her youthful dream of becoming an Idol and then Aqua just offers her a chance to actually realize her dream out of the blue....MEM is so overwhelmed & happy she's at a loss for words...as if asking herself "is this REAL right now!?"

Did feel bad for Kana....it really hurt having to see the man she's in love with kiss another girl, even if it was just a professional thing. Her pain & pangs of jealousy are still real.

Even though playing catch in the park was an odd choice, Kana was happy just to spend time with Aqua and talk. She did throw her pitches harder when she was irritated with him.

Aqua for his part is doing this entirely for his sister Ruby, helping her realize her Idol dreams.

I know, it's so sweet! Even though Aqua's doing it all for Ruby, he's having a big effect on people like Kana and MEM, too.

kamenriderhime

I know, poor Kana!!! I'd be upset too. LOL catch was a little different but yeah, I think she was happy to spend time with him. Hahaha she put a little bit of frustration into her arm at times too haha!

Yeah, we really get to see just how good Akane is here - both on paper and in her performance. Aqua being affected REALLY says something!! Yeah this has to be really confusing for Aqua, seeing as how the maternal influence plays a part in many males choosing a partner, and in this case it's made even more complex by the whole former life thing. Hahah yeah Aqua can read a lot of things, but he's not looking too hard past the surface with Kana, is he? Hahaha the "first time" line would be so wrong out of context right!? OMG do not bring Zeke into this lol, that's all I need!!! Yeah Aqua really doesn't read women too well sometimes does he?? HAHAHAHA Todo would be proud! Exactly, the fact that Akane doesn't know about the kids, but is able to deduce that all from observation, is very striking to Aqua. Right, this is more of a relationship of convenience since Aqua needs something from Akane. Makes sense that being an entertainer wouldn't leave much time for actual romance. Aqua was so smart to keep everything legal about what he did!!! I'm glad Aqua was honest with Akane and he's not trying to straight out manipulate her. It's also funny to me about the couple who did get together but didn't on the show - if you want your relationship to work, that's probably actually a good call! Aqua was the perfect person to mention the whole idol dream to, huh!!!!
