Hey everyone!  Here I am with the eighth ep of Oshi no Ko!!!!  It's time to get things in gear for the new B Komachi now that we've got MEM on board!!!!  It's not easy picking a front and center person, but dang, who knew Kana had so much singing experience?!  I really feel for Kana, she just keeps trying and trying even if she's not the biggest name in the business - she's always doing her best and moving forward!  Getting to know MEM's backstory was great too!  I'm all for the inclusion of "older" internet personalities hahaha!!!  Can't wait to see where this is all headed!  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Hi Hime :) Yes, a season 2 has been announced. As the manga is still in progress, there may be others. Akane can be helpful in finding Aqua and Ruby's father, I think it's really for her sense of profiling and the way she understands Ai that Aqua is interested in her. I felt bad for Kana who saw Aqua kiss Akane, but the good side of the story is that to find out if he was under Akane's spell, he spent time with Kana, to compare the two and the The result is that he doesn't see Akane like that, because he already has Kana in this position. At least that's how I interpreted the scene, Aqua says that it's thanks to Kana that he understood that he didn't see Akane that way. Kana constantly putting herself down is heartbreaking, but if it can reassure you, it will improve in the next episodes. For the reason that she demeans herself, as she said in the arc of the drama she was in, she learned not to play the diva and became a person who pleases everyone, she tries to let herself be carried away by the flow without making waves. She also had a really hard time not having a job anymore, while she was called a genius as a child. As a result, she came to doubt herself and her own talent, a talent that she has continually grown over the years and by working hard, it is her way of protecting herself, by playing second roles, she protects herself if it doesn't work. Kana is frightened by several things, the fear of disappointing, of being rejected or abandoned but above all, causing harm to others. That's probably why I love her, it's because I see myself a little in her, as an artist, I often belittle my own work, it's not mentally healthy, but it's hard to get rid of this habit after several years of being like that, even when you know it ^^'.

Miyako is starting to realize Aqua’s got an eye for talent, as he got MEM’s attention on her idol project without even really trying too hard. Obviously getting her numbers means an almost immediate popularity boost - it’s like when a popular YouTuber tells their followers, please go give this person a look-see. MEM is hiding one thing about her, and that’s her actual age. I actually kind of relate to this because just today someone said they thought I looked over twenty years under what I actually am. XD But unfortunately in the industry, there’s a hard cap on that and there’s almost no way to get around it regardless of the circumstances. MEM was put in a place where her choices were either to follow her dream or support her family, and because of who she is, she sacrificed the former in favor of the latter. Neither Ruby or Kana have any problem accepting MEM, as she’s already quite popular. Kana relates quite personally to the process of being “aged out,” as a similar thing happened to her career. Kans is still upset at Aqua because she’s still lying to herself and fulfilling the role known as “tsundere” quite well. Ruby is asked about her feelings about her brother’s dating show - she’s honest enough to say they’re mixed up and all over the place. It’s like “so how do you feel about your brother dating this super cute actress?” What’s the answer? For any sibling, talking about another relationship with the other sibling is complicated. Oh by the way they mentioned they saw a super awkward siblings tv series where they were kissing… aren’t these kids a little young to be watching Game of Thrones? 👀 Minami points out maybe Ruby will eventually meet Akane. Frill shows up to point out the whole hypocrisy of the show and what it’s real intentions are. ( I should point out Frill’s VA is Raphtalia’s btw). Both of the other girls begin to put together that what they see on TV is not the same as the person in real life… you know this in the back of your head but seeing it in person adds a new understanding to it. Apparently she is actually familiar with Aqua and that’s why she was watching the show, but his role got her interested. In fact, Aqua is getting noticed by quite a few girls… but he’s not really interested, which probably makes him that more appealing to them. It’s kind of sad that he’s got another lease on life and he can’t really enjoy himself - he’s so hung up on his own emotions he can’t appreciate interest from any of the girls his age. Two in particular come to mind, I’ll let you use your powers of deduction on that. 👀 MEM’s video making know how is an instant boon to B Komachi, and they realize that they don’t have to wait for new music to be created - there’s an entire library of archived songs they already have the rights to. So they have to start practicing their dance moves. Lana is beginning to self doubt herself and her reasoning for joining this group - she can’t match the sheer dedication of the others. When Aqua offers her a bottle of water, she refuses, still upset about the way the dating show went. At this point Aqua has even gotten to the point he’s getting a little cheesed off at her. She starts to realize she’s getting upset over something silly, but it’s too late. He’s already gone. I should point this out - Aqua has not made any promises to Kana at this point - she’s acting like he should be interested but we all know he’s hyper focused on other things. While her emotion is somewhat understandable, it’s also showing a degree of her previously established selfishness, considering there’s never been a hint of interest coming from Aqua’s side towards her at this time, either. It’s one of her personality flaws - but at the same time, no one can help how they really feel. Kaburagi reveals that Ai worked in the same company Akane is currently in, and he noticed changes to her personality during his time there - he doesn’t provide a direct answer, but he shares the little amount he does know. The scene also points out the hypocrisy of the industry in that the sushi they’re having is ridiculously expensive while other people are scraping by to get enough food (see Kana and the cans of beans from a few episodes ago). The producer is concerned that digging up AI’s pats will darken Aqua’s perception of her - but he already knows more than could be imagined. He’s more interested in indebting Aqua to him now so he can call in a favor later, should his career skyrocket - because the right casting can make a world of difference. (Look what happened with the lead actor for Kamen Rider Den-O, for example.) Here’s what we do know: she was definitely seeing a man. You don’t produce children if that’s not the case. We just don’t know who, but odds are he’s connected to Akane’s company - all the more reason to keep that relationship going. The producer offers to introduce Aqua to the leader of the company if he is interested. Koburagi is also interested in the revived B Komachi project, and gives them an opening to perform at the Japan Idol Festival, the stories are starting to intersect, but Ruby has no idea they’re even related. But that’s moved up their timetable and they have to get better in a month. That’s not much time. Jana is worried about what might go wrong, but Ruby rightly points out this is a golden opportunity and they should seize it. It’s time to decide on the center of their group - the main face, the one the rest of the group takes its cues from - for the original idol group it was Ai. Just as a movie needs a headline actor in most cases, an idol group needs to have a center. The two otaku both really want to do it, Kana is less interested. All three of them have strengths in different areas: Ruby has passion, dancing ability, and athleticism, MEM has experience, maturity, and know how. Lana then gets teased about her child singing “Bell Pepper Exercises” act. Is it any wonder she’s a little hesitant? On top of that singing puts you in a extremely vulnerable position. Even if you’re good at it, it takes a lot of confidence and self belief to do it in front of a large audience. Kana’s also putting herself down constantly because, as she’s said before, she’s hated how she was as a child actor (she was a little snot to everyone) and her “teenage/adult” years are paying for all the bridges she burned. It’s almost like she wants to punish herself and doesn’t feel like she deserves a second chance. It’s why she keeps putting herself down about all her past experiences. Ruby’s starting to put together that Aqua is having a specific kind of charm over a certain type of girl, and while his intentions are purely on instincts and not intended moves, Ruby finds the discovery a bit off putting to her own feelings. The karaoke test for both MEM and Ruby is a disaster, as they can’t even crack a 50 score, and that’s when they discover Kana kept working at her singing career out of the limelight. (I do believe that is her actual seiyuu performing). Meanwhile, Kana is in a private booth and her score has blown both of theirs out of the water… As you asked earlier, Oshi No Ko is green lighted for S2, as of this point there are 13 manga volumes of the series in print in Japan. Considering the immense popularity and traction the show has gotten, it’s unlikely to slow down any point in the near future. One last thing: I believe it’s been reported that AI’s seiyuu is about to do her own cover of the opening theme, “Idol.” Wonder if that’ll get any views? 👀

Another bit of real life intersecting with art.....Japanese Seiyuu (voice actors) are much more tightly connected with Japan's music industry than our Anime dub voice actors are. So Kana's seiyuu IRL is using this role in Oshi No Ko as a vehicle of self-promotion...all of them are, it's part of the game over there. The music video segment gave her a solo part to sing. But yes, Kana is a very talented singer, she's just wracked with self-doubt. Artists are often their own worst critics. And yeah, she's (still) in love with Aqua but feels jilted right now and they definitely need to talk this out eventually. Also, if you look at the group dynamics, we have Ruby and MEM, two tall Blondes....Kana is the short, fiery redhead....put her between them and an audiences' eyes are naturally drawn to her because of the contrasts! Really, she's the only logical choice for Center, she's just afraid of failure. Kana's singing can cover for Ruby & MEM's shortcomings in that area...all they have to do is be back-up singers and Ruby can shine with her dancing skills which MEM can develop as well. Kana's singing can carry the group. Sidebar, I think this entertaining AMV using Oshi No Ko captures Kana's intense feelings right about now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCzWV7Buung

Hi Melissa, that was another two very good episodes of Oshi no ko. I found it very exciting to see how Aqua reacted to Akane being able to imitate Ai so well. I think Akane's acting skills are really amazing and I'm not surprised that she's so good since she's at one of the best theatrical schools. I really love Mem. She is one of my favorite characters in this anime. I think it's really funny that she lied about her age. You can't tell she's 24 years old at all. Aqua allowing her to become an idol after all is pretty sweet of him. I feel very sorry for Kana. She is really in love with Aqua or at least has a crush on him. And I can really understand what it's like to see your crush with someone else. Akane and Aqua have agreed that they only have a relationship in the show, but Kana doesn't know that. Kana really has a hidden talent for singing. I loved her song and the music video for it. In the next episode, you'll also find out why Kana doesn't want to be the center of the band. And that has so much realism in it again. I'm already looking forward to next week's finale.

Not “old”. Classic! ✨ Interesting questions. Could you make it work without a front person. I remember taking a music history class in college. We talked about a time where groups, mainly quartets ruled the world. And even though they performed, everyone knew it was the producers and songwriters that were the real geniuses behind great songs. Solo acts weren’t a thing yet. Back then you have a group of people entertaining and as things progressed people wondered how can a crowd be entertained with just one person. And now know it’s the normal thing with having idols. With a group like the Supremes you had the same idea of performing members but obviously Diana was the one people looked to during their performances, making it an obvious that front and center was the thing that sold. So it shifted from songwriters and producers getting the credit to more the singers getting acknowledgment and credit for making the sales. We’re long passed that now so I’ll say no it can’t be done. And I should be the one front and center 🧑‍🎤👩‍🎤👨‍🎤 🎶

There you go, I like the way you think Manny!!!!! :D Ohhh that's so interesting! So at one time, the idea of individualizing the concept of a group act was so strange. The Supremes are a great example, and I think that idea is just so engrained into the concept of a group/band now that it wouldn't be possible to not have a front and center person. OMG you have my vote for sure Manny!!!!!!!!!

Hey Leonie!! :D I know, it really showed just how authentic Akane's performance was!! Akane definitely has the training and skills for serious acting. Mem is so fun!!! I can't tell she's 24 either! Aqua allowing her to follow her dream is really sweet! Awwww I know, it's heartbreaking to see the person you like with someone else! (I've been there too.) That's what I thought, Kana doesn't know it's strictly professional. Her song was sooo good right! Aww I can't wait to see what we find out about her but it sounds like it's gonna be sad too! Next week is the finale, can you believe it?!

kamenriderhime

That's interesting about the connections between VAs and music in Japan! That's actually a great idea to use this show as a form of self promotion lol! I totally get the self doubt aspect, I feel so bad for her. Poor Kana, it's awful having to see her be heartbroken over Aqua! That's actually a great point about how Kana fits as the front and center visually too! That's actually a great point, Kana being a strong singer can carry the group while MEM and Ruby make up in other areas. OMG I love that song by Avril Lavigne lol, guilty pleasure of being a 2000s teen!!! The video is so fun and perfect!!!

kamenriderhime

Hi Spadeas! :) YAY!!! That's great news! Akane is a great person to have helping with this mystery. That's a good point about how Aqua spent time with Kana afterwards and realized how he feels about Kana. I think he definitely feels closest to Kana in terms of confiding and being himself, so that's a great start in terms of some sort of relationship! Kana's self doubts are totally understandable but so sad to watch knowing how awesome and talented she is. I can totally see myself in her too, isn't she so relatable?! It can be so easy to be overly critical of ourselves and let fear keep us from good opportunities!!! I totally get it!!

kamenriderhime

Aqua's got recruiting skills for sure, and MEM bringing her audience will be a big help! I hear you about age! I look/act younger too and am just starting to get to that point that I'm a bit self conscious about my real age lol. OHHHH was it Game of Thrones they were talking about?? Hahaha! For all I knew, they meant this week's ep of JJK :O :O :O It is kinda too bad that he can't quite enjoy his new life, isn't it? I'm sure Aqua's aloofness makes him all the more attractive. That's so cool about the VAs! MEM's insight into videos is gonna be a huge help! I know, I feel bad for Kana....that scene with the water bottle was so angsty lol. I hear what you're saying about Kana - there's nothing beyond platonic to their relationship. Yet as someone who is very jealous I'm gonna have to side with my girl on this one :P You're so right about the right casting, Den-O is a great example! But yeah, it is kinda sad to think about all the entertainers scraping by during the big expensive sushi dinner huh. Aqua knows more about Ai than this producer could possibly imagine, yet there's still so much he doesn't know. Right, she definitely at some point was involved with a man, that much we know. Ohhhh so that's why they got the festival invite! I can't remember if I picked up on that or not lol. They all for sure have their own strengths. Poor Kana!!! The self doubt and self loathing is so sad. Kana's singing is definitely the best! YAY season 2!!! I can't wait! WHOA, something tells me that cover is gonna break the internet!!!
