Hey everyone!  Here I am with the eighth ep of Oshi no Ko!!!!  Awwww Kana!  I loved having an ep where we explored how she's really feeling and all the things that have brought her to the way she thinks/feels about herself now.  I can't imagine the pressure of having to be "relevant" as a small child, only to get abandoned by your family and manager and struggle as such a young person.
I just really want  win for her!  I know she can do this - she has all the talent and skill, she just needs to believe it about herself, you know??  Can't wait for the finale!  Great ep!  Enjoy!!!  ~ MH

Of course, Ruby and MEM would try their first method of convincing Kana to be the center to be pushing her into a corner - Ruby learned that from Aqua - Kana is a individual who will cave in the more persistent you are with her. But the redhead isn’t really having it. These two don’t have quite the same, what’s the word… “influence” on her that Aqua does. Not to mention she has no desire to be in the spotlight, after her previous experiences. More on that later. It seems that the other two girls didn’t stop at one single but researched her whole album and her “improvement” over the course of it - but it’s not just the singing ability they’re after - Ruby is able to recognize that Kana has a level of responsibility and emotional maturity that the other two lack, which just makes her more appealing to be the lead. The way they actually convince her is to show her just how much worse their talent is - it’s kind of a reverse psychology of using one of her own social techniques on her and kind of “forcing” her to realize she is the best choice, no matter how you slice it. Miyako went and enlisted some help in the form of Pieyon, who basically gives critiques to the girls from experience and also puts them through harsh training - because they all need to have the stamina to get through a set, not just physically, but also emotionally, which can also drain your mental energy. (You know this, you do reactions! XD) But in this case, they have to be able to do what they need to even if they’re dead tired in reality. Seems like Kana is having one of her self doubt issues when Pieyon ends up talking to her as a one on one conversation and she’s getting a little disgusted with her own personality, as she always says the opposite of what she actually is thinking. We have a word for this: it’s called “tsundere.” Pieyon point out that Kana isn’t focusing on any of her more positive qualities - she can only see the negative ones, because that’s all that gets reflected back to her. Apparently he’s also very “observant,” and has noticed things about her preferences that the average person would fail to pick up on, which makes her get a little more interested… What isn’t crossing her mind is that MEM and Ruby have noticed that Pieyon’s body shape and stature look a lot more like Aqua’s then the one they see online… Ruby even says she’d never stop laughing if she heard her brother doing that Duck voice. Well, about that… As they’re working out, Kana starts hating on Aqua again - and basically doing the same thing she was scolding herself earlier for, saying the opposite of what she’s feeling. “There’s not a thing about him to like.” She hides behind the fact that he doesn’t use honorifics, because she’s older, but then MEM noticed, she’s never treated HER that way, either. The pot is really calling the kettle black here. Meanwhile, Pieyon is “recording” their practice session from the hallway and streaming it to the ACTUAL Pieyon, who’s on vacation, but using some time to relay coaching and advice to them, because he’s taken a liking. (Also, when Aqua as Pieyon handed a water bottle to Kana earlier, that was a callback to her refusing a bottle of water from him earlier). Pieyon also notes that Aqua is so good at his acting nobody’s noticed the impersonation yet. Aqua admits that any “advice” he would give Kana would instantly be rejected just on principle, Pieyon disagrees with this assessment. Ruby can’t sleep, it’s the night before her first big day, which is both kind of endearing and off putting to Kana, who knows the importance of actually sleeping. Kana asks why she’s so into this, as she is only focusing on what could go wrong, so Ruby kind of and kind of doesn’t tell what her real motivations are about doing this. She also wonders where “her first love” is, as the doctor who cared for her was probably the only one she saw a whole lot of. Well, funny story about that…. Kana takes the story at face value, just glad Ruby has someone who will support her. Which is a bit of a loaded sentence coming from her. Kana can’t sleep so she walks downstairs and then happens to see the mask sitting on the table next to you know who… well, so much for Ruby being the one who can’t get any sleep after that… 😅 Ruby starts responding the same stuff Kana told her last night at the idol festival, showing how rumors turn into fact, which MEM calls her out on. Kana is naturally having her mind race trying to figure out what Aqua is doing for them and why, but she needs to rest - unfortunately, they’re not on the main stage so the prep area is pretty much a locker room with no space for anyone or anything. Kana is putting on a brave front, and acting like she’s been here before (she has), but the truth is the amount of pressure she’s feeling is enormous, and it’s exponentially bigger now that she’s got people counting on her to perform. She went through a lot after her career dried up, partially due to aging out, and partially due to her inability to work well with others - but it was okay for her since it only affected her. She’s also wondering when she started the self deprecation of herself like social media did, perhaps it’s a defense? Her thought process gets interrupted by Ruby, who’s finally feeling the butterflies before performing - Kana tries to brush it off as nothing for her, but Ruby’s a little too shrewd to be fooled by that. It doesn’t matter if you’re an amateur or a professional, there’s always a degree of nerves before taking the stage. But Ruby is glad that Kana is, actually, feeling somewhat the same way as they are. Kana’s outburst kind of feels like a cathartic moment for her, her hopes, her fears, and how much she’s worried about letting the others down - but Ruby’s already stared at the bottom of the life barrel in her previous incarnation - compared to what she went through there, having the opportunity to do this, even if it doesn’t go well - it’s still a lot better than not trying at all. Having heard Ruby’s pep talk, it’s finally time for the lights to turn on so she gets ready for the show… prepared to do her best, professional, rookie, confident, scared, or perhaps a mixture of all of them, no matter what comes next.

Ruby is just filled with boundless optimism and it's infectious....As low as Kana feels right now, it's as nothing compared to Ruby's past life as a terminally ill child. For Ruby, there's no place to go but up....she has a 2nd chance at life---literally--and she's got no time for self-doubt or negative self-talk this time. Ruby's legitimately nervous and turns to her experienced Senpai for guidance, but in the end it's Ruby that pulls Kana out of her negative self-talk and doom spiral...."I don't want to drag you guys down" is what Kana is saying but Ruby in her own mind is like "bitch, nobody knows down like what I went through...chin up already!" (Ruby of course is kinder in her actual speech, haha) They did a great job with the Pieyon fake-out; Since he was wearing a hoodie even I didn't notice at first. But Aqua was 100% correct; Kana would've rejected anything Aqua might've said as himself. But donning the Mask and doing the Pieyon voice let Kana relax and just relate....and made her start to....fall in love with....the man she always loved....though of course that revelation coming at the high price of ZERO sleep after...I don't think I would've slept either....translating all the positive experience with "Pieyon" into realizing it was Aqua the whole time....how does she still feel about Aqua....what does it mean, these renewed feelings she thought she was experiencing for the real Pieyon but was actually Aqua....no way a restless mind tortured by those thoughts can sleep.... The episode ends on a positive note, with Kana clenching her fist in determination and then pulling tight the glove of her idol outfit.

One thing that is SO hard for musicians to accept is that lack of commercial success does NOT mean the musical performance AS MUSIC was bad or lacking talent. The market is a fickle thing and it's nice when these two coincide but they are only very loosely correlated. Many works of art, songs, etc, are not appreciated in their time but become cult classics later. The Karaoke machine gives us an objective measure of Kana's real abilities, which are solid. Kana points to the disappointing sales of her first album as evidence she's not cut out to be a singer but this is an unfair metric to apply. That two idol Otaku like MEM and Ruby LOVE her music MEANS something but Kana refuses to see it. Something can be a critical success but a commercial failure...goodness knows it happens in movies all the time! Kana should know that as an actress....but she conveniently forgets or refuses to see the same possibility is true in the music industry as well.

Facing those “not good enough” insecurities is rough as an adult. I can't imagine being so familiar with those feelings as a kid.

Exactly!!!! It happens in every form of art there is honestly. And so true that some things just aren't appreciated in their time, but might be discovered later. I couldn't agree more!!! I think Kana's having a hard time moving past her own feelings on it, even if the facts say otherwise. Totally understandable.

OMG so true, Ruby's past life was definitely the epitome of sadness and loneliness! Ruby's really not wasting time on any kind of negativity this time around. Ironic that Ruby ends up helping Kana after looking to her for help lol. I love the Pieyon situation haha! LOL it's so ironic that she falls in love with him even when she doesn't know who it is. No wonder she couldn't sleep!

Yeah I doubt anyone will have the influence on Kana than Aqua does lol. That's so true that raw talent isn't all that Kana possesses. The girls did a good job of doing their homework and trying to use some psychology to get it across to her. Hahaha I know all about stamina, especially when it comes to how much some of my shows put me through the ringer :P Yeah tsundere is a good way to sum this up lol. Hahaha all the signs were there that it was Aqua!!! Ohhh good call about the water bottle callback. Hahaha I wouldn't be able to sleep either if I'd just found out about Aqua/Pieyon! It's so sad to see how Kana's internalized all of what's happened to her. So true that Ruby's been through literal hell in her past life, so she has a very different perspective on all this. Love this ep!!
