Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 7 of Vinland Saga!  Wow you guys!!!  So much going on in this one!  First off, we have a little background (or at least supposed background) on Ketil, we meet his pretty scary son Thorgil, and oh yeah....we have a really tricky situation involving some kids :(((  I think Ketil genuinely didn't want any of that to happen, sheesh.  Oh yeah, and it looks like Arnheid has a VERY important role here....erm....I don't think anyone's letting her go anytime soon!!!  Yikes you guys, the drama!!!  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The “obvious” development at the beginning of the episode is what’s going on between Einar and Arnheid - on the surface, it just looks like the two are really hitting it off. Obviously, there’s a lot more to it on her end: and I’ll just tell you that even after everything that’s revealed about her current life in this episode, you still don’t have the full picture. Thorfinn’s impression about how a wheat plant can be so tiny and yet produce so much might be a good metaphor for how something weak turns into something strong or useful. Thorgil is a new character - and he’s come home from war, as the older son. Obviously, he’s much more of a “normal” Dane, than some of the other characters at this point in time - which makes him frighten even his own dad. Then again, the ear necklace seemed a bit over the top… 😬 The reason so many names begin with Thor is because they’re Danes, and Thor is a Norse god. Don’t forget, too, battle, conflict, and war is basically their religion. It’s about how hard you fight, kill, and die, that determines your fate in the afterlife according to most of their beliefs - which is why so many of them are what we would label as “boorish.” Then again, how many wars in history have been fought over differences in philosophy? And we should address the two children - the act itself wasn’t all that damaging, but the act of thievery itself is a serious crime - even more so in this time period. No matter what the reason was, it was punished severely. Kettle, of course, would prefer to handle this without violence - but he can’t let them off with a slap on the wrist, either. Thorgil cannot afford to be seen as week, so he must punish them - if he doesn’t - then people would try to get away with more. The thinking is “if I don’t deter this behavior now, what happens the next time someone tries to steal, how much bolder do they get?” Also, should point out, after the first strike from Thorgil, Ketil did the rest of it just yo make sure the kid only got beaten as opposed to bloodied. Also, the reason that Thora (the sister) didn’t get beaten is because that Sture (the brother) asked to take her share of the punishment as well - otherwise she’d have gotten the same treatment. The whole situation sucks - but at least he didn’t lose his limbs. Okay, well, I could probably just sum up this episode by stamping a big “IT’S COMPLICATED” on every single scenario, but I still have another episode to go get.

Thor was also revered by farmers because of the rain. So it really covers a lot of bases.

I think this episode is great & I love it even with some of the heavier subject matter because it’s just that interesting. I love seeing the progress on Einar & Thorfinn’s crops. I think there can be a comparison between wheat starting small/weak and grows strong/useful and humans in general which I like. The praying scene is the funniest or at least top five funniest moments in this season. The voice acting, Thorfinn’s bewildered reaction & the way the characters play off each other is hilarious. Einar actually mentioned that he’s of English & Norse descent which explains why he is familiar with Christian & Norse beliefs. It’s really interesting to learn about the older son of Ketil. Especially the fact that he was taught by Snake which is most likely why he was able to make a mark on the battlefield. Also I don’t know who else he has voiced but I love this VA. As soon as I saw that the thieves were kids I had a feeling this was going to be rough especially knowing what punishment is in this time period. Olmar’s reaction to the severed ears is exactly why he shouldn’t be on the battlefield. Although Thorgil collecting the ears is messed up to say the least. I love the back story we got for Ketil. here it was super interesting even before the reveal later especially with the image that was shown of this person fighting with just their hands. It makes sense to assume that this was a Thors like situation especially with the way he didn’t want to talk about the past. I think the show does a good job of subtly showing how much Ketli does not want to be here when it comes to having to deal with these kids with the animation & his nervous way of talking. I love how we can legitimately see his kindness with how bad he feels for the children’s situation as well as his relief at Pater speaking up with a better solution. I don’t think Pater wanted to punish the kids with violence but most likely knows others wouldn’t accept that. I have heard of hands being taken as a punishment for stealing but not arms I think this was an example of how brutal Thorgil is. I personally think the look on Snake’s face says that he doesn’t like having to punish these kids but thinks it’s necessary but I appreciate that he wants a lighter sentence for them. It’s still messed up but with Ketil doing the beating it was not as bad for the children. But this does show us his weakness because he could just not do this but just goes along with what everyone else does in this time period because he knows it’s what’s expected of him but also doesn’t want people to look down on him for being weak if he doesn’t set a precedent. Something interesting to think about is that Thors was strong enough mentally/morally/physically to do what he believes is right no matter what but other people like Ketil are unfortunately not. I think it says something about how powerful societal expectations can be. The reveal about his lies was surprising but I like it and I think it adds to his flaws. Because even if you don’t end up liking a flawed character those types of characters are always interesting at the very least. Also we get the complete reveal of Arnheid’s connection to him which is a sexual relationship and an emotional relationship from Ketil’s side at least. It doesn’t excuse it but this relationship does explain why the wife was treating Arnheid so harshly. And to me she didn’t look happy about her position with this relationship which is really sad but makes sense for this situation. I really liked your thoughts on Ketil, Arnheid & all the different complicated situations in this episode. One of the biggest ones being how Ketil is a good but weak man IMO. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
