Hey everyone!  Here it is - my reaction to season 2, episode 8 of Vinland Saga!  OMG YOU GUYS!!!!  Not the wheat!!!!!!!!!  Noooooo!!!!  I feel awful for them, all that work!!!  Backbreaking work, months and months and months, omg!  And wow you guys, we got some excellent character stuff for Thorfinn here.  I kinda love the idea that there's a hope in his current emptiness - like yes, he's a shell, but now that the hate is gone, you can fill that shell with anything you want.  Friendship, farming, love, etc.!  But dang, he got ACTIVATED during that scuffle with the retainers!!!  Shoot!  Also I would NOT wanna make Einar mad either, he's a gentle giant but still a giant!!!  And he was POed to boot!  What was the thing that Thorfinn was trying to remember???  Genuinely asking lol, my memory is so fuzzy on season 1.  Great ep!  Enjoy!  ~ MH

The interesting thing about the dreams Thorfinn is dealing with is that as you know, and as was brought back up here, Thorfinn was pretty much “driven” by his hatred throughout most of Season 1. It wasn’t exactly a good thing, but one does kind of shudder to think where he would’ve been if he hadn’t had it to keep him going. However, the nightmares he’s dealing with now, could be fallout from the unintended consequences of his actions. And now that he knows Einar, he’s got a face to put to the other side. Thorfinn is pretty much trying to unlearn / relearn how to live - war is all he’s known, and now that he doesn’t have it - well, there’s space that needs something to drive him. There’s an interesting metaphor about the way Sverkel is teaching them to fish - he instructs them “don’t throw the net in the same spot all the time.” It’s kind of a life lesson as well, as Thorfinn is kind of “casting his life net” around and seeing what he can come up with. Taking out the wheat crops is a lot of things: it’s dirty, underhanded, and unnecessarily cruel. Even if Pater is able to prove that the retainers did it - there are several things going against them - the first is: obviously, they’re slaves. The word of a free man vs a slave, even if the freeman is a scumbag, is valued higher. Also the fertility in the soil was already used up on the crops. I don’t quite understand completely, but as I told you last week, I have friends who actually do farm wheat over a large area. They do not plant in the same patch of soil two years in a row because of this: after the ground is harvested, they let it sit and recover for a year before they plant it again. So these two would have to clear a completely new patch to begin farming: the spot that was destroyed is currently useless. Einar and Thorfinn were both discussing if people could change or not. Obviously, Thorfinn has changed to become a lot more peaceable, and it’s kind of ironic he’s playing peacemaker because this whole slew of events got Einar really into a rage mode - not his usual style. So it’s kind of like the tables have turned on both of them. Thorfinn is trying to remember something he both wants to forget, and yet he mustn’t. Even though it seems, he’s already forgotten what it is, and is trying to jog his memory. To be fair, he’s got a lot on his plate to think about at the moment… now back to your regularly scheduled skirmish on the farm road. 😅

I know, hate was all that kept him going for so long. Now he has to deal with all of that. He has to find a whole new way to live for sure. I know, there's so much hidden meaning in the fishing lesson. I hate the way they destroyed the crops!!! Everything about it is just so cruel! Yeah I feel like even if we're able to really get to the bottom of what happened and prove it to Ketil, our guys are still at a disadvantage here. And that's what I thought about the soil/fertility :( That's so cool that you have friends that farm! I think you're right, they have to do it all from scratch :( I know, to think that Thorfinn has been playing peacemaker here is pretty wild. The tables really did turn didn't they! I know, Thorfinn's got a lot going on right now! I can't remember it either to be fair lol. I can't wait for what's next but I'm scared!

I love how introspective & philosophical this episode was. It’s hard to say what Thorfinn needs to heal from what happened in his past but I think talking to Einar about his father & Askeladd is important for the healing process and I like how it helps Einar understand his friend better. I love how understanding of the situation Einar is with his words about how you can't just get over trauma just because you are told to as well as hatred not really helping anything. I have to think at least some people were talking about how without hatred/anger Thorfinn would not know what to do with his life after the end of season one & after the chapter in the manga at that same part of the story because that is a subject in other revenge stories which makes sense because it’s an interesting concept/topic to talk about in a story. I agree it’s interesting to learn how they would make roofs back then as well how to fish with nets. I love that having heard the conversation Sverkel gives really wise advice about learning new things & making yourself into something/someone new. Even if it’s bad that Thorfinn feels empty it is a good thing for what he might want to do which is to be reborn. I also like the advice to keep your hands moving if you are unsure what you want to do. I think the concept of giving people second chances/people being able to be reborn is a great & inspiring thing and I think a lot of people aren’t willing enough to give people second chances in the present day. Obviously it does depend on people’s feelings, the circumstances/situation around a person who wants a second chance as well as actually showing that they want to change but I personally think most people who have made a mistake deserve a second chance. Also there have been a lot of good & bad things about Christianity and I think the concept of rebirth is one of the good ones. I love the belief Einar has in Thorfinn & the comment about how different he is from the past is really sweet. I like the detail of him seeing a vision of Askeladd in the distance. Also his warrior impression is comedy gold LMAO. It’s completely devastating to see what the retainers did to their fields. It’s completely understandable that Einar is full of rage but what I really love is that his rage is less focused on himself & more focused on how someone could destroy a farm when they have experienced the joy of the hard work things like this take. It is indeed strange to see Thorfinn being the one trying to calm down someone else’s anger but it really shows his growth. I think this scene with Pater is where I started to really like him with his support for the two of them & the way he can relate to and understand them. It’s hard to hear Einar talk about the situation with Arnheid’s situation which connects to how badly slaves are treated. It’s unbelievable that the retainers are actually bragging about what they just did but it’s not surprising with the ways we have seen them act. The punch is really satisfying but it’s dampened because we know that fighting the retainers would have consequences. Although I love Einar just being ready to go. It sucks that there will probably always be people who will do anything they can to feel power over others. I felt bad that you ended your week when this reaction came out on a downer of an episode. Also this was such a big cliffhanger when I was watching week to week. Awesome reaction & thoughts. Keep up the great work. :-) <3
