Haven't watched your reaction yet (I'll do that later when I have some time), just skipped to your discussion at the end. Man, you guys were bang on! Which is cool, as It means I won't drone on so much adding extra bits! Yes, Misha is so subtle. The expression on his face when Dean kisses Anna and she forgives him - the beginnings of shame, or doubt, but still a lack of full comprehension. Anna just got her grace back and therefore became a full angel again, with all that that means - losing the ability to feel and experience things in the same way that humans do. That's what Dean was referring to at the end - wanting what Anna had now. A little BTS - Apparently, Jensen got so deep into his performance at the end that he had to walk it off before they could carry on. Took him several minutes to pull himself together. Lots of people love to hate Alistair, but I also find his voice odd. I don't find this actor all that annoying, but I understand that you might. I don't know what his regular speaking voice is like - I've never bothered to look it up! Anyway, that vessel has been vapourised now by Anna (or maybe is just dead from when Sam stabbed it in episode 9). Oh, and P.S.. I get what you're saying about the tendency of TV to keep the women looking too nice even in circumstances where they should look like hell (no pun intended), but it is VERY difficult to get Gen Padelecki looking anything other than gorgeous. She can carry off make up free or just about any look.

this ep is a bit of a mixed bag for me. i like anna fine, but i feel like her and jensen didnt really have chemistry, and them having the worlds longest sex scene doesnt help lmao. on the other hand, as a huge castiel fan i really appreciate his scenes! not only is his performance great, but i think he looks very attractive bathed in the bright white light lol. It's never explicitly stated how souls are twisted into demons, but it’s my headcanon that becoming the torturers in hell is that first step in turning into a demon, and that dean was on that path, but was pulled from hell before the transformation could take place. Makes sense to me that torturing other souls would eventually strip away your humanity and turn you into a monster, literally. (sorry for going on a rant or whatever but!) pamela the psychic is always grabbing sam’s ass or making rude comments and I hate it. I know it's played for laughs, “haha sam, a MAN, is getting groped by a woman! isn't that funny?” but literally, if the scene were a guy doing the same thing, grabbing a woman’s ass, saying ”you could bounce a nickel off that” when she’s clearly not comfortable, it wouldn’t be funny. it’d be obviously gross. Honestly, not to go all hashtag me too, but I think it's just shitty sexist humor. (this “fun gag” also happened in 3x03 when the elderly woman kept groping sam, if anyone’s keeping score. hilarious.) another reason this episode is a mixed bag. Sigh. I'm gonna go back to thinking about how pretty castiel is. Wonderful discussion as always, hope you guys have a great new years, and see you in 2020!

Disagree on two points - I thought Dean and Anna had fantastic chemistry (eye of the beholder I guess). But also, the hashtag doesn't seem to leave any room for women who are comfortable in their sexuality and and not afraid to be sexually forward with a man. Unlike the old lady, Sam has no objections to Pamela and she's aware of it. He's not very used to a woman frankly coming on to him like that, but if you remember he and Dean in 4x1 both of them were quite keen on her. There is still room in the world for lightheartedness and flirtation.

This is one of my fave episodes of season 4. The ending monologue breaks my heart every time. Jensen didn’t overdo it and he didn’t underperform either. Just the perfect balance of guilt, shame, and just plain sorrow coming across. I agree with what you said about Jared’s performance too. While he intrigued me from the beginning, I think when I originally watched this, this is the episode where I really started to love Castiel, so I like you’re seeing and feeling that too!

You know the art of acting is REacting 😉, and when Jared and Jensen are playing off each other, that’s when the magic happens. You two were utterly silent for that entire end monologue. 10/10 reaction!

Alastair is seriously one of my favorite villains of the show. I think the voice just adds to his creep factor and it sets him apart from everyone else.

This was a real pleasure. A great episode and a great Reaction. I can tell when you are going to really "like" and episode, because you get really quiet and intense looks on your faces. I loved the expressions you made at certain points too! lol I like both this episode and the one before. It's great when we get the perfect combination of writer and director for the episodes. The writer for this one was Kripke himself. You can tell an episode is important when Kripke takes it on. The director was really good too. Too bad he didn't direct very many episodes. The episodes where we get so many big characters together are so much fun to watch. I understand the issues many people have with Alastair's accent. I don't recall how I felt about it originally. The dude is worrisome, though. And I was curious, but worried, about finding out what he meant about Dean "having promise". The whole Hell thing was hard for me. I take the show pretty seriously, so Dean going to Hell messed me up a bit and it hurt my heart to hear what happened to my boy. Yes, I'm a Dean girl. But I love Sam too. Our boys are amazing actors. They help make crappy scripts worth watching for me. Jensen - and Jared too - are able to fully put on their character's persona when they are doing scenes. It's amazing. The laughs they have on set can be misleading. They take it seriously and really do care. They just be sure to have some fine at the same time. Originally I was very curious about Cas and the angels. I had been worried about how the angel/heaven aspect would affect the show I had come to love. So far this season it was working out well for me and I was very intrigued. Castiel was pretty interesting, and I think it's mostly because of the actor playing him. And the building chemistry between everyone. I also like Anna. She added another interesting aspect to the growing story. Season 4 had really hooked me by this point. I wanted to see where this all lead. Sorry, I tend to go on sometimes.

Jonathan Cassell

Don't want to read everyone's comments in case it was said already but the actor playing Alistair is from Rush Hour u where right and from Saw and Shawshank etc.

AdoptDontShopPets

Love your description of Alastair’s voice as being like a Marlon Brando imitation. lol it does sound like that!

There are definitely times when I look back over the time of watching this show where I think, things could have grown too repetitive. But then a new character/idea shows up and things get more exiting and expanded. Angels, and Cas specifically, were that thing in this season. The amount of storytelling through Misha's acting was amazingly well done.

So, I know this is a bit late but I just wanted to point out the really cool foreshadowing that comes with the characters that they are romantically involved with in this episode, with Sam being with the "bad" side and Dean being with the "good" side. I think its really cool foreshadowing for who they turn out to be the vessels of.
