Man, you guys sounded really overtired! Hmmmm. I don’t know if you’ll find many SPN fans who can tell you much about this episode ‘cos it suuuuuuuucks and we all forget it! SPN has almost never done a successful episode where Sam and Dean are the B plot (or almost totally absent). I can only think of 2 Or 3 off the top of my head, and both of those concerned major secondary characters in whom we had an emotional investment, not random strangers we don’t care about. Magic on tv is very unsatisfactory because we know that there was no skill involved at all. It’s not even a stage magician’s performance, it’s all done in the edit. Nothing remotely clever is happening. To me, this didn’t feel like an SPN episode at all (this part of season 4 was a bit weak). Like you say, from main plot POV, its main function is to get Sam back in the saddle with Ruby. Other than that, next!

I’ve always liked this episode. Old school vs new magic with great veteran actors. The boys taking a back seat wasn’t that alarming to me. It used magic as the vehicle, but the story was really about friends/family, trust, history, and secrets.

I love this episode. Mostly becasue of the magicians themselves. And yeah, the rules are a bit fuzzy with Charlie. But judging with how much power he had, we can assume he takes his death without actually planting a card on himself, or using that same exact spell. I think he just wanted to mislead the hunters. From the sounds of it, he allowed himself to her old becasue he found good friends, and he didn't want to give away his immortality. So after he threw Sam and Dean off, he went back to being young. And this time there was an actual card on him, so that particular spell worked on him. Also, you guys missed the part where Dean tells Jay "thanks for dropping the charges" when you guys started talking about how the hell they got out of jail 😂 I think you guys were too quick on the draw there 😅 I think I know most episode names of the first 5 seasons. Like if you name it, I'll know which one it is. The most memorable ones are super well known to most of the fandom, like "Yellow Fever", "Mystery Spot", "Tall Tales", and the premieres and finale episodes of the first 5 seasons. I would say I know a good amount of 6 and 7 by name. After that it's rough 🤣 But yes the fact that the episode names are stated in the beginning credits really has drilled them into the fanbase's consciousness, even before streaming services. You know I just remembered I used to write the episode names down in a notebook back when seasons 4 and 5 were being broadcast LMAO I had COMPLETELY forgotten. Maybe that's why I know then so well but yeah those were my favorite season and the hype was real. I was 18 ok? 🤣 and to me, my love for the paranormal and the fact that we went into this very Christian/Catholic religious route in my favorite show was mind blowing.

You guys legit laughed over the part they said how Sam and Dean got out of jail; Jay dropped the charges :D This has never been one of my favorite episodes, it's not bad, i guess it doesn't really feel like a Supernatural episode to me, maybe because Jay and his crew are kinda the main cast of this episode. I do really like the performance of the actors though. Also don't know if you noticed but this is one of the few episodes so far that doesn't have the Impala in it at all.

ive never really been super into this episode, has just felt kind of gimmicky, like "oh, this is the one with the magicians". and the pacing to this one has always been a little slow for me. but! the next episode is one of my favorites so looking forward to next week!

I was a bit surprised to see that you guys liked this episode. Was it mostly for the "filmaking" aspects of it, or did you just like it as a good episode. I definitely do not like this one. Didn't when I first saw it and usually skip it on re-watches. Part of the reason is that I don't like magicians much. Especially the ones like Chris Angel. I found this episode mostly boring and just bad. They had good, seasoned, actors though. Could have had a better script for them though. In my opinion. Maybe there was a message in this episode. The one magician didn't do anything wrong yet he ends up alone. He did the right thing, but didn't make things better for him. I didn't understand why the other dude was so angry at him either. Was he supposed to just let the bad guy keep killing people? sigh The title of episodes is an great way to jog the memory when you're talking about an episode with other fans. Much easier than saying - "remember episode 11 in season 4 when such and such happened?". Season 4 so far has been really good, so I guess having a bad apple here and there is okay.

Haha sorry if we were a bit drowsy 😅 didn't realize we'd be so outta sync with the base on this one! But I suppose that's all part of the fun. Sad there aren't that many tidbits, though. I guess from now on I'll be more wary when Sam & Dean are in the background. That is a good point re: the magic, as well. Even the best stuff you watch on TV, it's hard to buy the illusion. Although, especially for some of the death-defying gags here, I did think the editing did its job reasonably well. I guess this'll be a drop in the overall bucket. Definitely looking forward to see where things go with Ruby & Sam coming up. Just shot the next ep. this afternoon, hopefully we'll be more aligned come Saturday 😝

That's a good way to put it! And that's a lot of what I think worked for us this episode. While there do seem to be a couple muddy logistics, I liked the interplay of themes between the boys & the older magicians. And thought the vets brought a lot of presence to their roles.

Toasted Toad

True, but J2 almost never remember episode titles (with a couple of exceptions because those episodes are always mentioned). It's always the fans! I wonder if they're even aware of the episode titles as they shoot them or whether they have working titles.

Hahaha I appreciate you catching that detail about dropping the charges. We try to keep our attention as on-point as possible, but every now and again a riff gets in the way 😅 Glad you enjoy this one too! I think the trio of magicians/the actors playing them is what endeared me most to this episode. Some of the Charlie rules kinda confused us, but throwing Sam & Dean off the scent does make sense. And I very much enjoy that the titles pop up at the front. Dunno exactly how to describe it, but it kinda gives it a ghost or campfire story-type charm. That is a great way to learn the titles, though! I'm far from your level (I think the note-taking probably did a good deal to solidify those in your mind 😝), but I definitely remember "Yellow Fever," "Tall Tales," & "Mystery Spot." I think the kookier ones always stick out title-wise. But hey, no shame in the game! We've all got our geeky ways of communing with our favorite stories. Definitely feel ya on the religious tones they've been adding. Greg & I both grew up Catholic, so it's been very fun so far to see their take on that mythology. Thanks again for watchin' with us, mate!!

thereelrejects

Hahaha yeahhh 😅we try not to let things like that happen, but inevitably something slips by once in a while. Appreciate y'all keeping us straight, tho! As for this ep, I can see why it's not a popular one among fans. I think the 3 guest stars did a lot for my good-will toward this one, at least. And found it kinda cool to have a different dynamic where Sam & Dean are kind of in a subplot, but in the same breath, I can definitely see how that makes it feel sorta.. un-Supernatural. And damn, did not register that at all!! Is this the first one without the Impala or have I missed more before this?? 😅

thereelrejects

Hah! I feel ya.. I'm pretty sure that's the way I'd refer to this episode if I had to reference it to someone 😅And even though we did enjoy, I can definitely see why it's not a fan fave. The followup episode was GREAT tho!

thereelrejects

Haha I think a lot of people were! It certainly has its flaws, but I think we found the positioning of the episode interesting (with the magician characters at the forefront of the story) as well as the themes & parallels you can draw between the boys' experiences and what Jay is going through. Can definitely see why folks don't care so much for this one (especially as it pertains to the serial arc of the season), but I think we found it a pleasant diversion more than anything. Will definitely do my best in future to retain more episode titles, but I'm far from encyclopedic on any of them at the moment 😅but yeah, you're bound to have a lackluster ep. or a dud once in a while. From what I hear the next part of this season is really good tho, so that's got me excited!

Chaos T

I'm one of the few SPN fans who finds this episode enjoyable. Maybe it's placing in the season where heavy stuff is going on is why it's not well received. I'm finding it more enjoyable in a rewatch.

Amber Dustman

I'm really curious now that you are into season 9, if you would rewatch this episode with a different perspective. The dynamic of the magicians to me always had a foreshadowing feel almost to how Dean/Cas/Sam behave.
