Them Bangtan Boys have been busy!  ...although they, themselves, don't actually appear in this video lol 😅

Either way, Black Swan is a pretty intriguing turn, both in terms of the video content as well as the sound palette (at least as of the version used here).

Join me for the next step in the evolution of BTS!!!

It is an abandoned mall! and they actually shot it in California, it was called Hawthorne Plaza I believe. Lol This comeback is different from any other one bts has done and I don’t just mean that from an artistic standpoint but in terms of promotion and how they’re releasing music. Before Interlude: Shadow was live they announced the album and an initiative called “CONNECT BTS” where they are personally funding 22 art exhibits in 6 cities across the world. For each city they post an interview online with a curator of one of exhibits with bts themselves conducting the interview. Something I’ve always admired about them is that they always use their platform to promote other artists whether it be singers, dancers, contemporary artists. Cut to this and I think your interpretation is correct about the burnout but —in my opinion— I think the burnout already happened and was resolved and now this album will be them talking about it. This will be their art exhibit. The version released on streaming platforms is a different arrangement! Instead of the orchestra, the guitar is still there, but it’s driven by an emo-trap beat instead. Fun fact: a composer named Shin Myungsoo did the orchestra arrangement for this video he also did the arrangement for their Highlight Reel short films (which you will hear a snippet of if you listen to Outro: Tear) I saw a really neat analysis that talked about their use of auto-tune and layering here, it isn’t used to “correct” but more-so as a way to distort and blend their voices making the 7 voices indistinguishable, which really drives home the lyrics of the song: a loss of one's distinctive voice, a loss of one's passion for the artform. As always thank you for reacting John!

I like what you said about the visual metaphor of the empty mall. I had thought that it was really beautiful while also being haunting but when you said that, it really sounded right. And for me as well, the song and video really connected back to the shadow concept of the comeback trailer. When I’ve shown people the video I tend to reference back to it a lot lol. I’ve seen a bunch of different interpretations since it came out and I don’t really thing there’s any real “correct” one. I think I even read that BigHit gave the music and lyrics to the dance company and told them to go crazy and just be as expressive as possible. If you watch the video with the lyrics on the screen, for me things really line up. They do a good job of expressing what the lyrics are saying in that moment. I’m super curious about when all of this was happening but realistically I doubt they’ll ever give specifics. It’s extremely personal. Like did they go through a rough patch or is it more of an underlying ongoing struggle? Either way the way they convey their desperation and fear of losing their passion for music/dancing really hit me in heart haha. And there is a studio version that has less of the string and orchestral vibe and more of a trap feel. Them doing a auto tune heavy trap song while talking about fearing the loss of their love of music comes across as really ironic to me. I love it haha

There’s 2 versions of this song, the music video has the Orchestral version and the other version doesn’t. I think both of them are good

Oh snap! I'm gonna have to look this place up haha. This art initiative sounds amazing, though! I just started to peruse the website. Would love to check out some of these interviews. It's funny, even now I'm learning things about the BTS operation and how it works. I love that they're using these opportunities to showcase and elevate other artists. The more I learn about the BTS philosophy, the more endeared I become. And that's a good point re: the burnout. I guess we'll have to wait to hear the whole album, but I would have to imagine this goes to document the journey through those feelings (hopefully with them coming out on the other side, anew). And good to know re: the 2 versions of the song! I didn't realize at the time of shooting this, but I've heard a little clippet of the Spotify version since then. I'll have to go listen to that version in full, but I'm a sucker for things like this where a song gets released in multiple versions for different reasons. Really enjoyed Shin Myungsoo's work here! Cool that they keep these ties with their collaborators. I also very much enjoy when people use things like auto-tune in an actual, instrumental kind of way that accentuates the song/subject matter. It's a tool just as much as any other and can be used quite creatively. I'll pay extra attention to that next listen too. Glad you're still enjoying the reactions! More to come!! :)

Aw, thanks! Glad I wasn't too far off with that! And I definitely feel ya linking back to the Shadow comeback when showing this to people - thematically one very much flows into the other. And likewise I'm very much curious as to whether this is a situation/set of feelings they've more-or-less overcome and are now opening up about through the music, or perhaps if it's looking to chronicle the shadow sides that persist throughout this life they're living.. I gotta imagine the life they're living is a blessed, but a demanding one - and I can definitely see how these feelings can rise out of that. Wasn't expecting them to explore these feelings, but I think it's pretty cool that they are. And if that's true about BigHit, that's pretty awesome! Elle B. (above) was telling me some about their level of collaboration with other artists each time they're rolling out a new project, and I think it's really cool that they'd give this song over to the dance company to interpret. Really makes it feel authentic and collaborative. Good call re: the autotune as well! Singin' about burnout with voices becoming even more robotic.. nice sonic metaphor haha. Thanks for watchin' along with meee!! :)

So I've heard! I'm definitely gonna have to go check out the Spotify/album cut. I've heard a small clip, but not the whole thing yet. Always enjoy when artists switch it up with different versions of songs like this. Makes it all the more creative. :)
