But but...but Sam has NO ass. It's just bone!

Jill I

Loved pamela' death scene, albeit sad, it was a realistic reaction to dyeing!

Oh no, my comment's disappeared! Bugger, bugger, bugger! Okay, let me see how much I can remember of it. First - yes, agree Sam's being a dick this season! Dean tends not to talk because he's emotionally constipated, but Sam is keeping secrets. And Season 1 Sam would never lie to that boy like he does in this episode. He's become a lot more ruthless. I think with Alistair, that's a common way that Chris Heyerdahl talks - I've seen him use that same manner elsewhere. It makes me wonder if previous incarnations of Alistair knew he was going to take over the part and mimic'd  his style? Or the reverse - did he see how Alistair had previously been characterised and followed along with it for continuity? I see him in all sorts of things, so wouldn't surprise me if he put in his homework that way. I like the way they bucked convention with Pamela. Instead of following the route of recurring character forgiving them as she is dying and becoming resigned to giving up their lives for a good cause, she's like "fuck you, I don't want to die, I wish I'd never met you". And yes, somehow it is more worrying hearing a regular human tell Sam that what he's doing is fucked up, rather than someone with perhaps a more vested interest. I agree that it would be fun to show more of the effect of death taking a holiday on the town, but I think there are 2 major reasons they don't. The first is the very practical reason of budget - they would need to hire more people and film in more locations. SPN's budget has always been very tight. Secondly, now that we are starting to build up towards the end of the season, they want to focus more on season arc. SPN tends to focus very heavily on Sam and Dean and how much misery the showrunners can heap on them! They are starting to bring in more recurring characters (e.g. Bobby, Cas, others you have not met) who are engaging enough that they can give J2 a break from lifting the entire load of an episode, but the burden tends to land very heavily on them. I love Misha's very weird method of playing Cas - he either doesn't look at the person he is talking to (usually Dean), or looks at them so intensely that it's almost uncomfortable.

Sorry for v long comment again! I will try to be more concise next time, I promise!

“Shag ass!” 🤣 The clunkiest of dialogue. I think this was an expression from the 1950’s?? and they really shouldn’t have Sam say it in 2009. Hilarious! Looking forward to the next 7 eps!

Reggie B

Toasted toad: writes long insightful paragraphs, has behind the scenes facts Me: the brown hoodie sam wears this ep is way too small for him lol But srsly, re: Sam being a dick... Yeah, kinda lol. The way I read it, all this season Sam has been laser focused on killing Lilith, even before he found out she was trying to break the devil out of hell. And everything he does is in service of that goal. (I don't think he wants to tell Dean about his powers because he knows he’d try to stop him.) And he’s willing to cross more and more lines to do this. We already saw just how obsessed he got with finding the trickster, back in those six months without Dean in “mystery spot” last season. Now as someone with a big soft spot for Sam, I can see that he thinks he’s doing all this with the “good intentions” Pamela mentioned. And I do believe part of it is just straight up Sam trying to do the right thing. But I also think revenge and anger is more of a motivating factor for him than he’d like to think it is. I’m sure everybody and their brother has told you this by now, but this final stretch of s4 is really, really good! I’m sure you’ll be getting lots of passionate, excited comments (myself included lol) as more people tune in, so I want to say I seriously appreciate that you guys take the time to read each comment and respond to all of us.

No worries! I HATE getting to the end of a good chunk of thought only to find that it didn't post & I gotta start aaaaall over again 😫 First - I lol'd at Dean being "emotionally constipated." That's a great way to describe it haha. That *definitely* seemed like a big indicator of change in Sam - the way he just flat out lies to Cole (gotta love those Sixth Sense references there too lol). Worried for the boys moving forward, there's a gooood amount of excess emotion there that's beginning to fester.. This is the first time I've known that actor's name haha, but I'm sure I've seen him before. Really loving his presence as Alistair (saw him in the Netflix thumb for the next ep, so I'm glad we'll see him a little more). I wouldn't be surprised if he looked back on the previous actors' takes. I guess it's just lucky that voice/intonation feels a lot more natural coming from him than the Rush Hour guy 😅 But I gotta imagine it probably worked that way rather than the other actors knowing in advance to base the role on him - although would be pretty fascinating if that were the case! Felt SO bad for Pamela here, but agree wholeheartedly - as much as it sucks to leave off on poor terms.. she pretty much has encountered nothing but misfortune helping the two of them out (minus, maybe, Sam's ass?). Either way that moment definitely hit. Can also see where you're coming from re: the effects of deathlessness on the town and all that. Does seem like there are ultimately bigger fish to fry at the moment in terms of what we focus on as we crest into season's end.. and it's also just starting to hit me that we're nearing the season's end haha 😅and yeah, when it comes to budget I imagine they'd want to prioritize something other than MOTW-type fun & games.. I just hope the boys can get SOME levity before the season's over, because right now I'm worried for them every which way. And YES! I think he hones in really well on... not feeling quite human? His demeanor and body language has this subtle quality of someone who's not used to all this human stuff, etiquette, etc. Definitely looking forward to seeing him some more as well.

thereelrejects

LOLOLOL what are you talking about, that's gotta be the BEST line in the show thus far!! 🤣 But who knows haha, maybe Sam was watching a lot of British television at this point in the show or something... nervous & excited for what's to come!!

thereelrejects

...but seriously though, if somebody made a Sam & Dean t-shirt that just said "Shag Ass!" underneath them... I'd wear it 😅

thereelrejects

Hahaha hey, no shame in the game!! Each of you brings your unique flavor of feedback & commentary and we appreciate each! 😊 ...and I hadn't thought about it, but scrubbing back thru the episode, Sam's hoodie does look a bit snug 😝 In seriousness, though, I like your reading on the situation! Especially as it seems like so much of Dean's Hell experience and the impending threat of Alistair has taken the front seat lately. And yeah, when it comes to his powers, it seems like Sam wants to talk as little about that & its surrounding elements with Dean as possible, which is understandable in a sense.. but like you said, it seems like his darker, angrier inclinations are driving him more as things get desperate. The more I think about these 2 just as characters, the tougher everything looks, because THESE DUDES NEED TO TALK and find some sorta neutral space, buuut they've both been through so much (not to mention being each on their own for parts of that) that I have no idea how they're going to come back to a harmony.. Either way, definitely feeling the excitement (along with a heap-ton of dread 😅) moving toward the end of this season.. glad to see so many of y'all lookin' forward to it (and to hear that we're past the lackluster parts haha). Just hoping our boys make it outta this one with their relationship in tact!! ..we'll see ya for the next one in a few days!!

The brothers almost never tell the truth to each other. At least not right away. Get used to it...

Michele

"Dean tends not to talk because he's emotionally constipated . . " - OMG! LOL!!!! love this

Michele

I've always like this episode. As I've said before, the information and character stuff always appeals to me in episodes. I do enjoy action stuff too, but the meaty bits are what make this show appealing to me. I agree with pretty much what everyone else has said. I think there's some variability, but overall I think we're on the same page regarding the brothers. I will just reiterate the fact that Sam was hunting without Dean for 4 horrible months. He had Ruby, though. Ruby would bring a different influence factor to a hunting duo than Dean. Sam has had a chance to gain confidence. Especially since he started using his gifts. So he is understandably not the same Sam that he was when Dean died. I think that has made everything harder. Dean hasn't adjusted as well to a different Sam who isn't as easily led now than he was before. It's sad that they won't talk more to each other about things. Both are pretty stubborn. They have to find a way to work together and trust each other again.

thereelrejects

Heh.. at this point it's what I've come to expect 😅ESPECIALLY in this season. These boys are in desperate need of a heart-to-heart!

2021-07-15 04:54:54 It's a good one!! And definitely feel ya re: the meaty story & character bits. Always love when that stuff takes center-stage and becomes the thrill. Looking at Sam & Dean's relationship throughout this season so far, I think one big element I'm starting to hone in on is the time they spent apart. You get flickers of the classic Winchester Boys, but that's a great point - Sam's had a significant chunk of time to be on his own, accept Dean's death, & learn a new way forward with new influences. The way that affects both his own character as well as the rapport with Dean once he returns is palpable, even if it's been a while since we directly referenced their time apart. Worried for them this season.. got my fingers crossed they can come to some sort of heart-to-heart before the season's out. The further in we get, the more vivid the hell each of them has been through becomes. I love how lived-in they've been able to make this all feel. Just shot the next one, so excited to hear y'all's feedback once it's up!!

1) y’all are assholes and I love it. I laughed through some of my favorite parts because of your comments. Especially the Maisy Williams crack and all the Alistair voices 😂😂😂 2) I’m so fucking hyped for y’all to see the rest of this season!! Like it’s some of my favorite television of all time. Just a huge chunk of 5 star episodes in a row. Seasons 4,10, and 12 are probably my favorites and you’re about to see all of why season 4 makes this list

Toasted Toad

Not to mention the extra psychological damage that Dean has undergone (and that’s to someone who was not exactly a picture of good mental health even before going to Hell), and that for him, it was years that he was separated from Sam.

Toasted Toad

You're kidding! 12? Really? That makes the bottom of my list, next to 7. Agree about 10, though. My second favourite.

thereelrejects

LOL I'm glad we didn't cross too far into asshole territory 😅😝just havin' some cheeky fun, but really enjoyed this episode. And as you can tell, we've been enjoying Chris Heyerdahl quite a bit. I'm definitely feeling the excitement cresting into the end of this season. Like.. excited in a very nervous kind of way as I imagine things can only get worse before they get better (and Sam and Dean open up without a siren forcing it on them!!! lol).

Interesting to see where everybody falls in terms of favorite seasons 😈10 and 12 feel so far at this moment, but I'm gonna keep this in mind. It's fun when they're divisive haha. One'a these days we'll have to get everyone's ranking of the seasons, methinks... 🤔

Michele

I'll be interested in how you two rank the season's. And maybe you can keep track of your general ranking for episodes and season's??? That could be of interest in the future. I know that I have changed a bit on my rankings over time, as I re-watch episodes and season's.

Feather_Noir

Interesting. S12 is one of my absolute favorites too actually. Tho I'd rank S10 as middle of the road for me. It's honestly pretty hard for me to rank whole seasons as there's usually something I like or dislike about them all. I actually am more likely to rank story arcs like I do with AoS. But S12 just had so much that I liked overall that I def put it in my top 5. S7 is for sure my least favorite too. Although there were a few things I did love in S7 so I don't consider it a total wash. I can't wait to talk about some of these things once we get there.

Toasted Toad

LOL - you will not find any 2 SPN fans who agree on a ranking! The only thing you would find is that most fans would put Seasons 4 and/or 5 somewhere in their top 5 (often they get No. 1 & 2 slots, but I feel that's influenced a lot also by the fact that many fans have not watched the later seasons but fell off the wagon (especially in Season 7). It is a lot to watch of one TV show, so for many I imagine they just ran out of steam)

thereelrejects

I think on our end, a season ranking would certainly be a possibility once we get to a certain point.. Ranking the episodes I think would take some repeat-viewing haha, but we could probably get a list of favorites/standouts going at the very least. 15 seasons is A LOT, but hopefully we can stick it out haha. Mostly it's just fun to see all the different points of view since, as Toad said, no 2 fans appear to have the same rank. I love the contrasts that come out of that. Especially the hot-takes lol.
