Hey Patrons! My dad is now pretty much totally able to move on his own and so I am back from my parents! I’m starting to ramp development up again, although unfortunately I expect the month of march will also have some distractions, though not nearly as large. In this weekly I’m going to be giving an overview of trinkets that digs a little deeper than the small paragraphs I’ve shared before.

This weekly also includes an audio Q&A! You can find audio timestamps at the end of this weekly.

Trinket Details

My current plan is for trinkets to be found relatively early in the game, during the sewers. This gives the most time for their effects to be felt, adds a bit more variety to the earlygame, and avoids adding even more gear congestion to the prison. Somewhere on floors 1-3 the player will find a ‘blank trinket’ item as loot from a special room.

This blank can then be used at an alchemy pot along with 6 energy to produce a trinket. Once the process has started the player will get to choose between 3 or 4 different trinket options. The choice the player makes will stick with them through the rest of the run, though transmutation might be usable to get a random different trinket.

In terms of theme, I think I’m going to make the ‘blank’ item a form of trinket-making catalyst, and the choices the player gets will be determined based on which items happen to be on the shelves in the laboratory room they’re in (or generally nearby if they’re using the toolkit). The trinkets themselves will all be various occult nick-nacks, the sort of items that might get thrown into a witch’s potion or used as part of a ritual.

Some examples of this might include: a rat skull, a mossy clump, a shard of glass, a piece of crystal, an eye of newt, a sundial, etc. I don’t know exactly how many trinkets there will be in total, but giving the player a few up-front options means there can fairly easily be more than the usual 12 that other equipment types have.

While all trinkets will cost 6 energy to make, they will also be upgradeable with more energy to enhance their effect, up to +3. The price of upgrading and the specific effects aren’t yet determined but will likely vary for each trinket.

Don't know if this has already been asked, but will the trinket be in the inventory, equipment section, or will it get its own slot?

Shattered Pixel

Trinkets will likely just exist in the inventory. You can only get one per run so there's no gameplay need to equip them.

any worry about that reducing inventory by 1 in the early levels?

Shattered Pixel

Not particularly, especially when inventory space tends to be the most congested in the prison. I'm hopeful that the other changes I'm making to alchemy (e.g. more accessible alchemize spells) might also help reduce congestion.

What’s your favorite lazy dish to cook? (I.e. something you can make when you’re dead and need a real meal)

I think I intended it to be a QnA question, but only if you have an answer you think is worth sharing

Dr_Purple07

Interesting stuff about damage and blocking RNG, kinda related, how are additional sources of blocking calculated? If I have a +1 plate mail and a +0 round shield is that a block of 1-19? Or are they calculated and then applied separately?

Shattered Pixel

Each source of blocking is calculated independently, which would make the result tend more toward the overall average.
