With regards to jumps and momentum, IIRC the system transit speed was supposed to be *slower* than that of a jump entry? The commandeered cruiser should therefore pull *ahead* of the fleet?

Not normally. For a low-consumption transit you'd maintain jump speed during transit, only expending fuel to correct your course for the next jump point. But if you're in a hurry, you'd accelerate during the transit and slow down for the next jump.
