So glad I subscribed here. First started reading sometime between 2013 and 2015 maybe. Recently tracked you back down and it’s been a joy catching up after all these years. Keep up the good work cause I’m excited for more

Shane Wegner

Jardin was the highest ranking surviving commissioned officer of the Bellarmine for a moment there, making him technically her captain. Maybe, briefly.

Classical Salamander

She makes a very good point! He's smart, learns quickly, and most important, he *should* be a complete unknown to the Umiak. Human reactions and patterns may throw them off when they are expecting either Umiak or Loroi in command of the ship.

Michael Pettersson

Excellent of Talon here. She isn't too proud to ask for advice and she did indeed notice his tactical skill something that is in his backstory. I suspect that at some point there will be an Admiral Jardin due to this. Him being a Captain now is just a technicality, he is really an ensign but a protege at that.

Ronald Homer

wait... does Talon KNOW that Jardin was originally an ensign, or not? who exactly decided to refer to him as 'captain' ?

Jeff Freeman

"A proper captain" Who's gonna tell her?

GhostlyYorick

Jardin's skill seems to be on the operational level of war. This tracks with him not being the best at combat and neither very diplomatic. But he's probably their best bet at commandering this ship, as it is

GhostlyYorick

it was back at the scene where Jardin was recognised as an ambassador for Earth's mission. No one else was left, and therefore he was technically captain of the Bellarmine. See page 61

ANTIcarrot

Options: 1) Pretend to be Umiak, as suggested 2) Run for the gate, and hope you can survive a fight with the two pursuers and they won't cripple your ability to run from the rest of the fleet 3) Accelerate towards them, blow through their formation, and run for one of the other gates, including the one leading to Earth 4) Surrender to Jardin, and gamble that the Umiak would be interested enough in a new species that they'll tolerate some pets. Kinda depends on fuel reserves, acceleration, and how long they can survive on board.

Earl Tower

Well the kid definitely has a quick wit and a knack for survival.

Nandan

Wow. Well, Alex is smart enough that he eventually would've been made captain, I'm sure. But in terms of field experience right now... Welp, it's gonna be fun to watch how he takes on that mantle. Aside from that, I'm impressed by the humility Talon is showing by requesting advice. She doesn't like loosing at "Cross-Fire", but when her life is on the line she can acknowledge a smarter mind, even one not of the same race. For some reason I feel this is a rare trait... among humans a least. Maybe the Loroi are more practical that way?

Dragoongfa

Hmm... Might be my inner writer speaking but I think that Alex will give the Pocket Historian its time in the spotlight. After all, the best way to keep the rest of the Umiak away and out of contact is to convince them that it's the best course of action; a bad case of Historian computer infestation combined with a still breathing crew trying to fix it should be enough for that.
