So the Historian Software Agent either has a block forbidding it from acknowledging that that's a historian ship, or, more, likely, does not have a perfect database of every historian vessel ever built.... and if that IS a historian ship on the sensors, it's a REALLY unusual one. Interesting.

OldHunter759

Interesting Indeed...

Todd Zircher

I could see a Historian rival faction or a rogue AI.

Michael Pettersson

That construct is clearly self aware. It has grow out of what resources the pad and the device it arrived on the shuttle in. This means that it would be abandoned if they leave the captured Umiak vessel. It could be fine with this but if the computer it resides in are detachable from the ship, it could perhaps transfer. I find this a bit unlikely thou.

an AI of that calibre should be able to recognise "ship styles" - if that ship is Librarian built, it should have enough similartities to be recognizable and "undetermined" is an interesting answer .. why not "unknown"?

Michael Pettersson

It never was "pounds based" that was just a title it hid under. It is possible some actual points was on the pad that it would have shown if anyone else that Alexed used the pad.

Michael Pettersson

It is entirely possible that the construct simply do not know. If data show that the ship indeed is of historian origin it could be either a captured vessel, a rogue faction or a betrayal that is so top secret that not even their construct knows. In that is the case it could, perhaps, become conflicted in its loyalties.

Theory: the historians knew about humans way ahead of everyone else, and were researching their immunity to mind reading when the umiak accidentally happened on historian installations where information related to mind reading immunity could be extracted from. The historians are trying to cover their butts.

The Construct AI stated " extract YOU " Hopefully Alec notices that and query the AI about also saving his new crewmates, likewise...

Anyone want to take a bet on the odds of Beryl going back to the Highland Shuttle to find out how inert the Personality Construct's Container may or may not be? She's no fool.

Sunphoenix72

Notice the two 'widjet' icons floating with the 'Walker' personality construct...? I wonder if they might represent autonomous but now hacked internal Umiak security measures? The "floating head" a Brilliant Expert control program and the "Eye" an internal security spyware meant to record and catalogue all encounters and mission events separate from the Expert control program.. neither subject to each other's control or override ~ but currently 'Walker's'... what ~ pets? They are likely not data that 'Walker' can just wipe from the system but Hard-Coded Hardware Components part of the ship's data systems. However, now 'Walker' controls what they can see and or do... so ~ 'pets'. But pet's 'Walker' can't get rid of.

depends on the limits of its database - the "unknown ship" might be too new, or from an area this program wasn't intended to go to.

Cosmic Pillar

Hey Arioch, how many civilian vessels does Humanity have?

Cosmic Pillar

Are they allowed to mount point defense weapons on their hulls? Or other purely defensive armaments?

AriochIV

Not normally. A special license would be required, and a good reason for needing them. I suspect that's the case with merchant ships today. Given humanity's changed position in the interstellar neighborhood, however, it will be much more common that future civilian vessels will be armed. Point defense weapons are not purely defensive; they can also be used offensively (albeit at fairly short range) and would be especially dangerous to other merchant vessels.
