I'll just say it. I was bored for the first half, but absolutely loved the second half. I just wish the episode was better paced. One point -- I do worry that people who haven't seen Rebels will be just bewildered. Space whales? WTF? Who is Ezra? Etc. Other than that, I like this show a lot.

Kenny

Call backs and nods galore.. I'm with Jason..... Ashoka is really too serious or grumpy. Wish there was more chopper in this episode.

Kyle Davis

What number do I call?! I wrote notes and genuinely wanted opinions but had no clue as to what number to call. I’m just trying to nerd out amongst friends

Kyle Davis

Well this was a disappointment.

Kyle Davis

I really wanted to share thoughts and see what the guys thought

Randy Koch

I agree on the question of who is Ezra. The training sessions of legit, it gives us more insite into the training of Jedi. Luke's minor training with Obi-Wan was more of a home than this.

Randy Koch

Are we forgetting all she has been through of course she would be guarded and skeptical

Randy Koch

Couldn't be more irritated after tonight show with the disdain of Ahsokas demeanor. I've got the fix to make you happy. Let's pull a GL! Dub Ashley's voice over Rosario's so she can be boppy and happy! Yes, people change!

Maybe it’s cause I never watched Rebels and only certain episode archs of Clone Wars and have no pre expectations of how characters should be… but I’m enjoying the show so far! I have nits to pick, but overall I’m enjoying this series way more than the likes of say… Book of Boba Fett.

Dean

I enjoyed the episode. The dogfight scenes were gorgeously choreographed and I liked spending some time with Ahsoka and Sabine in the training sequence. One thing I noticed in the dogfight sequence was how Ahsoka was encouraged by Huyang to consider alternative strategy and there were a couple of really beautiful character moments when she placed her trust in Sabine and gave her the floor to get them out of trouble. Regarding the mystery box tendencies of the storytelling - one of the most important pieces of advice I've received as a writer is that a narrative should be constructed as set-up and pay-off. Set-up and pay-off. If you have multiple plot threads, they should play off one another and contribute to the set-up/pay-off structure. This episode was very much about setting up for pay-offs down the line and I hope Filoni has built them in. Ahsoka will succeed if it follows that structural maxim. The sequel trilogy failed because it relied too much on the mystery box. It's a terrible writing strategy and it reveals much about how they no idea what they were doing when they were constructing the story. Andor has succeeded (so far) because Tony Gilroy employed the set-up/pay-off strategy. It will be interesting to watch this series unfold and watch back once it's complete. A note about Kevin Kiner's score. It is fast becoming the successor to John Williams. It has the Williams foundational voice and Kiner is bringing his own to it. On my second watch of this episode, I found myself really engaging with the score and felt the spirit of Williams (and a little Vangelis if I may say) within it. Just outstanding!

Blake Weaver

Enjoyed the podcast this week guys. I’m not gonna lie I’m not enjoying this show. Bland characters with a weak plot are making this forgettable and not fun to watch personally. This weeks episode didn’t help. But hoping the latter half of the series can do something for me.

Drake Widlake

Where’s the audio podcast?

Blake Weaver

Even though Kenobi I view as worst ( that could change ) at least it had great acting. I’m really hoping something speaks to me in this second half but I doubt it at this point. We’ve wasted a lot of time so far.

So sad I missed this aftershow! With the timeslot/my Timezone I’ll only be able to jump in halfway from now on - don’t make me hand in my aftershow chat crew badge! i took notes while I listened so I wanted to add a few things that I’ve observed. First of the bat was the ‘few who knew what he would become’ from Baylin in the trailer - I assume we’ll get this next ep in their confrontation, but is he aware that Anakin become Vader and how did he know? As far as I was aware it wasn’t common knowledge. Does Ahsoka not want to train Grogu in Mando because she already failed Sabine (assuming that training attempt happened first) and uses the connection with Din as an excuse? Or did she actually treat them separately. In response to Blake’s take (which was great), we know that Zeb is on the same base as Teva, who has connections to Mando. Will Mando and Grogu help (either with Zeb or Zeb will call Teva/them for reinforcements). This might be the path to the Filoni movie. Overall, this show is doing a great job at building the circumstances to where the sequels happened. I would also recommend reading the novel Bloodline which is set prior to the sequels, and shows a bit more of the politics - Mon Mothma is around so assuming that happens later in the timeline I don’t think we will get an assassination of Mon Mothma. An attempt, maybe.

Randy Koch

What did you expect and what would you change, honest question? I truly do not understand the hangup

Blake Weaver

Three episodes in and why are we looking for thrawn? Who is he and why is he a danger? What is up with Sabines wanting to be a Jedi all of a sudden? While I did see rebels the core of what’s motivating these characters to do anything in this series is missing in the writing almost halfway through. Also the live action versions of them are lacking the soul the animated ones had to me. I understand why it’s not a biggie for some but for me it’s not well executed.

zillobeast

Keeping faith in filoni Not gonna murder the show yet. Feel it’s rich and dense and action packed. Ahsoka is my all time. I love her well Ashley eckstein’s ahsoka But as I try to analogise to my mates who haven’t seen cw or rebels the ahsoka we fell in love with was like Charlene in neighbours. The ahsoka we are seeing here is more mrs mangle. To be fair in rebels she was much more sulky. NB I’m not sure if you American watched neighbours but it was a staple for us uk kids. But ahsoka and Charlene share so much personality traits. Blake. What a boy. When he first came on perhaps 2 years ago my son didn’t rally like him. Maybe envy. Now he loves him as realises he speaks sense. Top work Blake.

zillobeast

Also as an aside The best live action star war perhaps ever or perhaps after rogue one is andor. We are roughly at the equiv stage of episode 5 there Ie around 40 percent the way thru. Episode 5 people were going crazy how dull it was. If we can’t have faith in filoni we can’t have faith in anyone. It will come good

Valentin

Yes if even Filoni cannot make me say "YES THAT IS STAR WARS CONTENT WORTHY OF GEORGE LUCAS ! " then I'll be very depressed.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Preach it, brotha! I've watched every episode of Clone Wars and Rebels, some many times over, and I have zero issues with Ahsoka's depiction. Lovin' every second of how she's coming along. Great show!

Sean W. from Warsaw

Wow, man I had no idea folks were having a hard time understanding those points about Thrawn. I thought it was pretty straightforward: Thrawn was a Grand Admiral, who is a very, very high priority target by the New Republic. Perhaps more high priority than a moff or a governor. But it's worse because Thrawn was known as a tactical genius--one hand picked by the Emperor himself against his own otherwise xenophobic policies of no aliens in the upper echelons of his society and military. So Thrawn must have been very, very good indeed. For myself, it seemed like pretty common knowledge for the characters given how much time had passed since Thrawn disappeared and how the new government would naturally have been hunting down remnants of the Empire to preserve its otherwise shaky peace. The impression I got, especially from the end of Mando season 3 with thr Shadow Council, is that there had been Imperial leaders that rose up after the Emperor died that were systematically rounded up just simply due to the danger they posed of reunifying the Empire, quite apart from any war crimes and such they committed. I also get the impression, like from the original Thrawn trilogy of books, that everyone knows that Thrawn would have been the last Grand Admiral of the old Imperial Navy, which would make him that much more.a high priority due to having no serious competition. I think it's reasonable to assume, too, that Thrawn had a very strong leadership sway and many devoted to his cause, given his influence and success. Anyways, sorry this is so long! But I hope that helps a bit, at least. 😀

Eric from Phoenix

Couldn’t agree more on the score. Really enjoying it. No major themes stick out like Williams in the movies but like what Kiner has done with it.

Eric from Phoenix

I’m hopeful that they will show / explain some of the stuff that is missing. Not sure I see this series getting wrapped up in one season.

Eric from Phoenix

Got to listen to the last 30 minutes. Good calls and discussions as always. Only thing I thought of but haven’t heard discussed is Ahsoka’s foot ware. Looks like they changed from boots to Japanese(I think) shoes that samurai would wear? Was very noticeable during the training parts of this episodes. Looking forward to the next episode and livestream!

Dean

I don't remember if Kiner laid down establishing motifs in Rebels so I couldn't say if he's brought them across to this series. I think it is more a case - at this point - that there are echoes of familiar themes from the PT/OT in scenes like the dogfight and whenever the Rebel Fleet feature.

Sean W. from Warsaw

He does have one theme thar I recognize. It's from sometime at the end of Rebels. I think it's with the wolves but I can't remember. In any case, you hear the music at the end credits of every episode.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Dean, I really like what you said about the set-up/pay-off as opposed to mystery box. My wife and I got into a long discussion about what qualifies as a mystery box vs traditional storytelling. The long and short of it is, we thought that JJ's definition of a mystery box, based off TED talks and interviews, etc, of his, is that the author himself doesn't even know what's in the box and makes it for the sake of just a mystery, until he feels like answering it late in the story, but not having had any real answer until then. The traditional way, on the other hand, is when the author intentionally leaves out information but does indeed know the answers, but is waiting for the moment to reveal the info when it suits the telling of the story best. For us (my wife and I), we determined there is not one gimmicky mystery box approach to the storytelling in Ahsoka. We don't believe Filoni is not a planner (unlike JJ and co) or that he hasn't thought this through way in advance. In fact, based on interviews from a long while back, we do indeed know he's thought about Ahsoka's story and it's end for years and years. We've seen his pedigree again and again. I have never lost faith in him as a traditional storyteller. The guy knows what he's doing. Any mysteries in the show thus far don't appear to be the gimmick of the infamous mystery box.

Dean

Thanks Sean! Yeah, I think the mystery box is just an excuse for bad writing - an inability to make connections in a narrative arc and/or to parlay those connections into character growth. I feel as those this has become rife in Hollywood storytelling in particular. Whether it's due to money pressures that plot threads in the development of a story are forgotten, or whether it's storytelling by committee, or whether it's a general degradation in the education and/or ability of writers, I couldn't tell you. I just know the mystery box has become a real problem that needs to be junked from Hollywood writing rooms. I never introduce a plot device into my writing without ensuring I devlop a pay-off for it down the line. I may not know what that pay-off might be initially but I work the story until I do - otherwise the plot device gets junked. That's how it should be in these productions. That it's not really colours my enjoyment of these stories.

Dean

I think a lot of people come to this series not really knowing the backstory of Thrawn (even going back to the first iteration of him from the 1990's). I don't think Thrawn - as he appeared in Rebels - was a particularly compelling or threatening antagonist. As much as he has been built to take the place of Palpatine and Vader, no one can hold a candle to those two Big Bads. So I get why people are ambivalent towards this series.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Dean, it hit me what that theme is: It plays when Sabine is training with the Darksaber with Kanan. It suddenly occurred to me when I was thinking about it and I heard those wooden stick instruments in my head, and I suddenly remembered how distinctive those were when I first heard that music all those years ago. Thought it was very Japanese. Stood out quite a bit for that dueling sequence. Good call by Kiner. I bet it's safe to assume it's Sabine's theme going forward at the end of every episode.

Sean W. from Warsaw

Very good observations about the mystery box approach, Dean. I would also add to that list that it's likely also a novelty that once was thought cool or fresh for a while. Do you know when it first started coming around, out of curiosity...? I'm not entirely sure, myself. But I think it was a JJ thing, if I'm not mistaken. So maybe like 15 years ago? In any event, my point is is that it's fairly new and yet has really driven good writing into the ground. Likely for the reasons you gave.

Jimmy Mac … MY MAN! Super points made about how they’re presenting Ahsoka to us! And imagine you’re a SW newbie & THIS is your introduction to the character. What a shame! Super reference back to how we didn’t see Luke become a mope … they’ve dumped this version of Ahsoka on us & we have no idea how she’s ended up like this!!!! Zero energy & no real reflection of the character we’ve known. If there’s a big reason for this change in her character then we need to see it SOON! Super show guys … thanks for all you do. Big shout out to all the callers & guys contributing to the chat throughout the live show. Always love hearing what folks are thinking! MTFBWY

Sean W. from Warsaw

Yeah, this is a series definitely more oriented towards the more devoted or hard-core fanbase, as opposed to the more casual. I can see some your points, Dean, for sure. I was looking at it from the perspective of Mando season 3, largely, but also looking at it from even the perspective of the term "Grand Admiral." I thought the prologue crawl set the stage for that. But you make a good point that folks who aren't in the know might not think of the term too much or its implications. And if they haven't seen Mando season 3 or Rebels, especially. As for how he was depicted in Rebels, he could have had more of the threat he had in the original books, for sure. He was...ok, I supposed. I think it was probably the fault of it being a show more towards the younger audience, myself. Still not sure on that one. Like when he had that orbital bombardment that was just about to kill everyone...but then he calls it off for unknown reasons. Took away the threat and tension. Here's hoping for a proper Thrawn with the slow burn they're building towards!

Sean W. from Warsaw

I can see where you could be coming from on those points. My wife and I have been discussing this a lot, though. We think we saw how she got this way at the end of Clone Wars season 7 and hasn't changed since then. We think it's part of her trauma she went through. But we also think it's her spiritual walk, while also being a way of showing her more like the senseis and monk martial arts masters of old in our real world, or in depictions in famous movies. Might not be to everyone's liking! But it seems like that's what's going on. 👍
