Wednesday is named for Woden himself, although the Romans called it dies Mercurii. This is a day associated with the color purple, the planet Mercury, and the metal quicksilver—which is also called mercury. See a pattern here?
When it comes to deities... yes, Mercury! However, there are a few other gods associated with Wednesday, including Odin and Hermes, Athena, and Lugh. Gemstones like adventurine and agate come in handy as well, as do plants such as aspen trees, lilies, lavender, and even ferns.
Business and job-related issues, communication, loss and debt, traveling, and journeys are all tied into Wednesday. This is a good day to do a working to open up lines of communication—especially if your actions are preventing you from being an effective speaker or listener. Go someplace new or return to an old favorite stomping ground, step up your game, and settle up your accounts.
Wednesday, or “Odin’s Day,” is when the planets of communication, Mercury and Chiron, rule. This is the optimum time for writing, public speaking, intellectual pursuits, memory, and all other forms of communication. It is also a day to recognize your karmic duties through astrology and your Chiron sign, an important asteroid placement in your chart. Through introspection, try to find your “sacred wound” and heal it so it does not hold you back in life, trapping you in old patterns and relationships. The element for Wednesday is earth and the sign is Virgo. Colors for this mercurial day are light blue, gray, green, orange, and yellow. The crystals are sodalite, moss agate, opal, and aventurine. The herbs and incense are cinnamon, periwinkle, dill, sweet pea, cinquefoil, and ferns
Wednesday is also a day that acquired its name from an old Norse god – Odin. In the Germanic, in particular Saxon tribes, he was also called Woten or Wodin, hence Wednes-day or Woden’s day. Odin is the All-Father in the Norse pantheon and rules wisdom, mischief, poetry, quests and the runes (among many other things). Wednesday is ruled by the planet Mercury, which rules communication and more. So, if you cast on Wednesday, it should be for one of the following intentions: communication (verbal and written), technology, cars/transportation, wisdom, clarity, spiritual growth or enlightenment, travel, psychic abilities, courage, divination (particularly the runes), and power.
Odin was a god of wisdom, healing, death, royalty and many other aspects of life, so the Romans equated him with Mercury, the god of commerce, eloquence, messages, communication (including divination) among other things. The quality of being a mediator between worlds also gives Mercury a parallel with the Egyptian god Thoth, the Greek god Hermes, and the Saxon god Herne.
Wednesday is a day to contact any power symbolized by the astrological symbol of the planet Mercury ☿. The caduceus, a staff surrounded by serpents and surmounted by wings, was traditionally added to depictions of Mercury. Other depictions showed him wearing a winged helmet to symbolize speed. The Valknut or interlocked triangles is a symbol associated with the god Odin.
Wednesdays are wild and wacky days. They are for communication, change, cunning, and the arts. This is a Mercury day, and just its patron god this day is full of contradictions, change, and excitement. Some suggestions for Wednesday enchantments would include:
- Pulling a little Wednesday color magic into your life by wearing purples or orange
- Carrying a multi-purpose agate with you and tapping into its various charms
- Working with magical plants such as the fern for protection. This plant will also boost the power of any other magical plants with which it is arranged.
- Incorporating lavender into charms and spells for transformation
- Using the charming scent of lily of the valley to improve your memory, or working with the aspen tree for communication
- Calling on Athena, patron of arts and crafts, for inspiration for a new project
- Fanning out a Tarot spell to increase you creativity
- Calling on Hermes on a Wednesday night to bring movement and good luck into your life
