So one of the cool things about creating a new campaign setting is that you can include your own personal shit. Today, I did that with the World of Tyne.
Way back when, I created a homebrew setting called Phantasm for a Pathfinder 1E campaign I was running. It had a lot of neat things, but one of those was the inclusion of a class of monster I called “imperishables” which was a catch-all term I used for any Dungeons & Dragons monsters I imported over. Like beholders or mind flayers. It was a cute gag, and I ran with it. One day I might even explain the dungeon I designed that had mirrors in every room and a Beholder tactically positioned at its center…
Heck, even Pathfinder has this prevalent in its setting. Seriously, the concept of Treerazer (wielder of the Blackaxe, yes that Treerazer) comes from Paizo Creative Director James Jacob’s home campaign, which I believe was originally written on a typewriter. The. Deep. Lore.
Anywho, this is all a long way of saying that I used the concept of Imperishables in Tyne. It’s not the same (we’re not reprinting D&D monsters), but instead a classification of creatures associated with the mysterious beings known as the Entities. Like the Perfectites or Malicites, the Imperishables are the servitor creatures associated with Tyne’s most enigmatic deific power.
With art from the amazing SaltyJub, the Spectromos finds its roots as a consumer of souls and a slayer of the incorporeal. I won’t lie, this original concept came from Salty’s simple file description of “ghost killer” in the art, which I ended up running with during the creation and definition of these creatures.
One final note… Imperishables are powerful. The spectromos is the least powerful creature in this classification and is 12th level. Expect to see more powerful and weirder takes on Imperishables as time goes on!
