And here's Chiana 😀. Yes it probably wasn't what you expected , but I will say no more so you get your own opinion of her over time . Rygel was great . This is one of does episodes you feel bad for him and proud at the same time .

You confused me into thinking Chiana wasn't in this episode. Your initial recap thoughts of Chiana will or will not last a couple of or one episode at least,....maybe. You kind of have to throw the conventional wisdom out with Farscape. You'll end up hating and loving each character at one point or another throughout the show. Rygel's moment to shine looked like it was a pleasant surprise for you.

I guess it's part of Farscape lore now, that Chiana was originally intended to be a one episode character, and was written to die when Durka shot her. But everyone on the show liked her so much that they rewrote the climax of the episode to keep her around. When the first season was originally airing, I watched sporadically so didn't see this episode first time around. I watched one that comes in a couple of episodes time and my reaction was, "who is this girl? She's so cool!" I like how morally grey (no pun intended) she's written to be, right from the off. Especially given she comes from a very black and white (again, no pun intended) culture. You called it when you said she's a survivor. Probably more than any of the other characters on the ship. I think she pegged John as an easy mark the moment she saw him, and knew she could play on his empathy, but was surprised at how genuine he was in his dealings with her. But I think her introduction is a marker point for when the show really goes to another level. Not necessarily because of her (though I do love her), but because everyone in the cast and crew, and the writers, seemed to hit that zone where they knew exactly what they wanted the show to be and where they wanted it to go.

I dont want to say much but keep in mind Sebacean lifespan is not the same as human life span. I guess it wasnt thought during the time this episode aired so Aeryn is surprised he is still alive

An interesting thing - Chiana wasn't suppose to survive this episode. That shot was meant to kill her. Producers decided her character and chemistry with the cast merited her surviving. I remember buying this episode on dvd (back when they released the episodes two per disc at a time. It has one of the rare Easter Eggs where if you knew where/when to click you got a bonus behind the scenes clip

Yep… episode 19 is the one I am most excited for you to see. It’s where the real overarching storyline of the show truly gets started.

From what I gather is that Chiana's crime was non-conformity. She was being taken back to her home planet to be reconditioned.

Notes from a Farscape fan: 1) Your instinctive response to Chiana is the correct one, even if it maybe feels unsatisfying at the moment. You say it yourself, every one of these aliens takes time to acclimatise as you learn more about them - the peaceful Zhaan has a violent side, the aggressive D'Argo has an amiable side, the selfish Rygel has an honourable side, and it takes time to learn these facets of them. The show will do the same for Chiana. She's just the newbie now, instead of Crichton. 2) A small fact that we learn about Rygel this episode that really informs his character - the time that Durka tortured him ended 100 cycles ago. The torture ended a century ago, and he only broke free of imprisonment at the start of the show. As the year turns from 1899 to 1900 on Earth, Rygel was being tortured by Durka. We look at him and all his blather about being Dominar, and think he's this silly self-aggrandising aristocrat. But when you consider just how long he's been a prisoner, how long he was tortured for, you realise that he is that way because that is all he has had - for over a century. It's how he stayed sane. D'Argo was framed for his wife's murder, and that's an obvious tragedy. This is Rygel's tragedy - horrific torture and over a century of imprisonment. Honestly, D'Argo kind of got off light.

I love the too close negotiations with John and Chiana. He was speaking her language, playing her game to get her to listen and talk. He made it fun and showed he knows how to talk to her. She liked that. It was strategic and brilliant and I love John.
