CHIIIIIIIIIIIII AHHHHHHHHHH NAAAAAAAAAA! Yeah, she's got a great look - fantastic character design / makeup. And moral complexity? Of course! This is Farscape! It was important that it be Durka for exactly the reasons you touch on: it allows Rygel to level up his development in his ability to face his oppressors, and (more importantly, in my opinion) it escalates Aeryn's disillusionment with the Peacekeepers; before it had largely been limited to Crais and his command specifically, and the rigidity of the structure, but as she's traveled on Moya and experienced new things, she's developed new skills and expanded her capabilities beyond what would have been permitted had she remained within the ranks. And now she sees Durka, and who he really is, for herself rather than just hearing about it from an unreliable source in Rygel. She sees who he really is, and now has to deal with the disconnect between who he is and the position he held within the Peacekeepers. That the problem isn't just overly strict rigidity, but that a man like that got into the position he did. If it had just been some other random Peacekeeper, it could have been written off as "just a bad apple" - and from a storytelling standpoint, why waste the time creating a second legendary Peacekeeper ash-hole when Durka is sitting RIGHT THERE and looping in Rygel the same way would have felt repetitive.

Chiana is the reason I started watching Farscape in the first place. I had some vague awareness of the show, but at the time I had a very low expectation that anything original put out by the Sci-Fi Channel was worth the investment. Mea culpa. In any event, it was late in the first season when I happened to be channel surfing and, by some great good fortune, landed on a moment when Chiana was onscreen. Her look was instantly mesmerizing and the thought of changing channels was abandoned just as quickly. I missed this episode on the first airing, so didn't have this information at the time, but it was a great introduction to the character. Thankfully, she makes a spectacular first impression whenever it is one happens to meet her. As for Chiana's crime, it's her refusal to conform to the rigidity of Nebari customs. Nothing more. Which isn't to say that she hasn't committed other crimes, but it's her persisting as an individual that offended the Nebari the most. Edited to add: Your reaction to Chiana's surprise appearance was so good I had to watch it again immediately, and I've never done that before. I'm so happy you weren't spoiled for this. Also: I've always believed that Chiana killed Sallis, but on this viewing I think it was Durka. Sallis didn't know the mental cleansing had been broken, so he had no reason to suspect Durka's intentions or that he posed a lethal threat to Sallis. More to the point, it appeared that Sallis' throat was cut, and that means he was facing his attacker. Chiana would have had a difficult time getting that close to him. It's just speculation on my part, but I think it's a reasonable conclusion.

I love that Angela is doing Farscape! First Chiana episode! She is my favorite character. Might not be everybody's. But ya gotta admit, she is sexy AF. Angela mentioned her "breathy" voice acting. It reminds me of Brie Larson's in Scott Pilgrim as Envy Adams. And speaking of voice acting - Angela, if you want your mind blown, go watch 60 seconds of any interview by Anthony Simcoe and tell us what you think during an intro! WILD!

2024-08-26 12:36:15 "Why is this slo-mo?" One of Farscape's more unique creative choices is its use of what some might consider gratuitous slo-mo. You're gonna see a lot more of it over the seasons. Some folks I've introduced to the show don't mind it, some love it, and some hate it. I'm not a fan of it, but luckily there's so much to love about the show that I can see past it. "That was a very weird dynamic that was happening there." Chiana brings that to every scene. She's not the only character like that either. The show just gets weirder from here. It works though. As far Gigi Edgley's portrayal of Chiana, her contacts were hard to see through. So she leaned into it with her performance. Just a heads up: For the rest of the season the episodes get even more serialized since we're in the home stretch to the finale. So the YT comments might get a bit spoilery. As always, it's great to hear your thoughts on the show. I love that after 25 years I can still get some fresh insights.

"Nebari mental cleansing doesn't get the tough stains out!" It's nice to see Rygel get ahead of Durka.

there’s an piece where he talks about how he came up with the D’argo voice and the switch between the two is so jarring. some of my favorite D’argo scenes are the ones that are clearly just Anthony having fun lol.
