One of my least favorite episodes of the series, but still better than a fair amount of what was on TV at the time.

Heretic

Congrats on the marriage!

I swear they borrowed the mask and teeth from The Mask for "future" Crichton. :D

I feel the ending was a little more bittersweet for John. He not only got a glimpse of how he could be in how Cranio Crichton acted, but he also had the self realization of how he himself acted the with Cromag Crichton . Cranio is how John usually approaches every single situation until Cromag finally shows up to do the right thing. Getting a front row seat to your inner flaws is an ego nutpunch. Especially for John because he knows his inner Cranio wasn't wrong but he has to hold out that his inner Cromag will eventually surface. His own Duality of Man

Yeah, those corridor cracking shots were probably the worst special effects shots in the whole show. I can't think of another where it's that bad. "Your time. Your place. My fate. I accept." Oh that moment always gets to me.

I've always found it really interesting the way Chiana and Aeryn react to the new Crichtons, and think it says a lot about how they see him. Chiana is intrigued by Caveman Crichton, and quickly becomes his advocate. She recognises the heart of the man who gave her a new chance at life, and who always convinces her to be her best self. But she immediately dislikes cold, Cranio Crichton and recognises the callousness in him. To her, that isn't John at all. Caveman is a John with less emotional and impulse control, which is definitely something Chiana would like (for... reasons). On the other hand, Aeryn is initially interested in Cranio Crichton because she often wishes John was more intelligent and more disciplined than he is. But soon realises that the advanced intelligence comes at the cost of John's emotional intelligence and compassion. Which is definitely something she doesn't like. Ultimately, I think the resolution of the story is a commentary of Farscape itself - not always the cleverest, most dazzling show, but always packed full of heart and warmth.

WrathOfTheGoth

I always loved this one as it plays with the evolution and de-evolution scifi tropes, the cloning tropes, and provides a taste of how the crew deals with Crichton behaving even more strangely than usual. There is also a lot of sweetness and sadness. To me, it is a mini-encapsulation of some of the best things to come.

I think it totally makes sense that they would be drawn to one personality over the other. They love John , but they connect to certain parts better.

even at the time those shots were really wonky 😆

OK, I'm gonna get a little philosophical here, so if that's not your thing, you may want to run away screaming now and not read the rest of this. 🙂 This episode asks some interesting questions, and what I find especially intriguing is that we start here with a premise that I think is more sci-fi than science, namely, the notion that extremely evolved humans would be cold and calculating and devoid of emotion. It's certainly a common theory (or at least trope), but as this episode so effectively asks, if you take emotion and empathy out of a human being, is the result actually superior? And is it even recognizably human anymore? It seems to me that, if we truly embrace the Darwinian idea of evolution, that is, if evolution is the end result of natural selection & survival of the fittest, the assumption that natural selection would, over many generations, effectively breed kindness and empathy out of human beings deserves to be questioned. Certainly, society as a whole would appear to benefit from these human attributes. The counterargument, I guess, would be that people individually benefit more from being analytical than they do from being decent and caring. So does that imply that selfishness makes a person stronger, and thus more likely to survive? People like Ayn Rand would probably say so, but if they're right, if Cranial Crichton is really the future of humanity, I'd be worried about our future as a species. I think the bulk of human history has shown, on the whole, that "every man for himself" is not really an effective strategy for long-term survival of a society, or a species. And I'd like to think that any "evolved" human with great intellect would recognize this simple fact. We associate being analytical with being emotionless, hence the phrase "coldly analytical." But I wonder if an honest and full evaluation of the human condition would not conclude that people whose analyses of everyday situations do not include an emotional component are doomed to produce a pretty unpleasant world, one characterized (at the very least) by more conflict than harmony and, by extension, more death than life. It doesn't seem like the way I'd want the world to be. So I hope that, as a society, we come to prize a real balance between head and heart, and that people who achieve that balance become the ones who ultimately are "fittest" for survival in the future.
