Loved the reaction, Angela! Def one of my favorites from season 2 (and one of the first episodes I ever saw). The next 3 are really great and season 2 is just left with banger after banger episodes including my favorite which is number 15 so really excited to see you get into all these hope your new year is blessed and filled with so much magic!!!!!

Given Angela's vehement declaration that Early Crichton looked nothing like Present Crichton, I was waiting for the moment when she recognized Ben Browder under the makeup and that moment wasn't verbalized. Very disappointing. I wonder if it happened when Chiana accepted him, but I suppose we'll never know for sure. As for Future Crichton's Southern accent, that's Ben Browder's North Carolina accent. We hear it a lot, although not as pronounced as it is here. I wonder if that was a conscious choice or if it was related to the prosthetic teeth (although Early Crichton didn't seem to have an accent other than "guttural"). In any event, it is a fantastic episode, and, like so many other Farscape stories, it presents some uncomfortable possibilities to ponder.

It's easy to see Cranial Crichton as a villain, and he does indeed play that role in the third act, but he's not all bad. For as much as Chiana says Cave Crichton is everything she loves about John, it was Cranial Crichton who successfully determined how to counter the sphere with the defense screen. Yes, John was thinking along the same lines, but if it was just him he would have turned on the screen at full power, it wouldn't have worked, and then he'd have realized why and they'd have had to repair the defense screen to try again - if they had time. He'd have gotten to the same place, it just would have taken a bit longer. The emotional aspect of Cave Crichton was useless in that scenario. But at the same time, he was the one who was willing to make the sacrifice immediately. As soon as he hears the message, when he tells Chiana, he doesn't tell her it'll be him with anger or reluctance, but acceptance. John reached the same acceptance - it just took him a bit longer. John is the intellect AND the heart. Not as much of either, but a balance of both. And I have to say, for as rude and unpleasant as his speech and behavior can be, Rygel's position of "the first Crichton I see gets this to the back of the head and I don't care which one" is actually fairly reasonable considering the circumstances. Not only his life, and all the rest of the crew's lives, but Moya herself is endangered by the sphere. He's selfish and greedy and all that, but we know he truly cares about Moya herself. There is a simple and obvious solution that's been known and available for quite a while, and time is running out. How can you blame him? Frell, but I love this show! (Seems like extra good timing on the three-parter! Congratulations again)

I hope that having links in a single post will mean it's easier to have any discussion all in one place. This episode's theme, exploring the nature of what it means to be human, is a cornerstone of sci-fi. This ep is clearly a descendant of the classic Trek ep, The Enemy Within, in which Kirk is split in two by a transporter malfunction, broadcast way back in 1966. The Trek version was more Jekyll/Hyde, but I really like how this focuses on the head/heart split, rather than good/evil. One Crichton is all heart, another all brain, and it's the way Classic Crichton merges those two that makes him such a compelling character, as you pointed out. It reminds me of a line I still remember from a book I read decades ago: "First with the head, then with the heart, that's how you get ahead from the start," which was something of a mantra/code of living for the book's protagonist. Happy New Year everyone!

Definitely having all the comments in one place are incredibly helpful for me to keep up with replying! I get so overwhelmed when there’s multiple post that I need to reply to. I know that splitting bodies/different personalities is a sci-fi trope that’s used to time again, but I absolutely love it in this scenario. I think John Crichton is a near perfect human and this really displays that he is in fact not perfect.

It’s not necessarily that Cranial Crichton is a villain, it’s just easier for him to make a decision that an empathetic person would struggle with. Logically it makes sense. But even typing that out feels gross. We love John because he’s intelligent and he has heart, seeing the two separate really showed how disagreeable intelligence can be when it lacks empathy.

Also interesting that the upcoming three-parter (next three episodes) happen to be particularly concerned with marriage. Quite the fortuitous coincidence!

Your Farscape Fridays are the perfect end to my week. I can't wait to see your reactions to the Look at the Princess trilogy of episodes, since they were, collectively, among my favorite episodes of the series. That's not to say My Three Crichtons is a slouch by any means, it's just bookended by a truly great string of early episodes and a phenomenal back half of the season. You are in for such a truly great and wild ride.
