the scene at the start was the ancient past before they traveled across the Atlantic, and one piece of Manga only info: Hell Clime Pillar was build in ancient Roman times by people trying to rediscover Hamon after the Pillar Men killed most/all Hamon users.

A personal nitpick I have with JoJo's part 2 is that if the pillar men were asleep for 2 000 years, they would've never encountered a roman emperor, as Octavian Caesar didn't become Augustus until 27bc and for them to have slept for 2 000 years would mean that they went to sleep at around 61bc, around the time Julius Caesar was campaigning in northern europe.
