If only Kircheis was still alive

On the topic of marriage, it is not that Yang is not interested, he feels he is not entitled to it. He is a soldier. Soldiers are murderers. It is a soldier's job to kill. He feels he does not deserve happiness when he kills good men who could have lived on and have families. He does not deserve happiness when good men dies fighting under his command. He does not want his descendants to shoulder his sins and legacy. he does not deserve happiness when mothers lose their sons, wives lose their husbands, children lose their fathers by his doing. This is the exact reason why he continues to serve even when he hates war: to keep his boys alive. It is a heavy burden he places on himself and reminds himself constantly (all the way as early as why he cannot reciprocateJessica Edward's feelings). It is righteous yet tragic at the same time.

Eventually, Yang will have to face the music and realize that in a way, he is Caesar, and he is at his Rubicon. And at that Rubicon, he must choose between two horrible fates. He can be a good man and do nothing, yet be labeled as an enemy of the state; or he could be a good man and do something, yet be seen as no better than an usurper. This is a very similar situation to many times in history where politicians are afraid that a competent subordinate might become more popular than them, and so they purge them. That was a rather favourite thing for Stalinist Russia.
