Two responses that IMO tell you everything that you need to know about Mal: From 1x02: Sheriff: "A man can get a job, might not look too close at what that job is. But when a man learns all the details of a situation like ours, then he has a choice" Mal: "I don't believe he does" From 1x05: Simon: "Why did you come back for us" Mal: "You're on my crew" OK, once I've *watched* the reaction, I'll see if there's anything else I want to mention!

I love how this show takes a character like Simon, a well-bred, manicured, finicky, sometimes whiny, and even arrogant man, and completely--and organically--endows him with strength. Even kidnapped, he does not hesitate to help the people of the backwater village with their medical needs. And, of course, his love for his sister proves his greatest power, bringing him to rail against the rest of his family, and to willingly die by her side when he realizes he can't save her. As Mal says, "Doc could be called a lot of things…coward ain't one of 'em." Love this show.

"Big Damn Heroes, sir!" Jayne can be such a little prick sometimes but then other times you just wanna buy him a beer and listen to his stories. He's not exactly a teddy bear but he's definitely a type of bear LOL It's interesting to me how they focused on the town leader seemingly wanting to believe River's just troubled but as soon as she inadvertently accused him of murder, he calls her a witch and joins in the crowd. A part of him probably did believe she was a witch, considering she knew something she couldn't possibly have known, but he also was probably more in self-preservation mode and wanted to kill the person that knew what he'd done. Nice catch on identifying Zac Efron! I didn't catch it until after I had seen Greatest Showman and then it was noticeable. Had no clue before that.

There's a previously on for this episode in addition to that voice-over intro? Well, that makes syncing up with the Blu-ray even more fun...

So used to reactors instantly remarking on this Zac Efron person that I started to think I'd be surprised by him not being recognised - and then... It's quite common for people to be shocked by Mal deciding to leave, but his behaviour does make sense - he has no idea where Simon & River are or where to start looking, and Book needs help *now*. Given the settlers take tradesmen, they are obviously after Simon's medical expertise, so are unlikely to hurt him - it's reasonable for Mal to believe he's 'safe' for the moment. Also, whilst the settlement itself might be relatively easy to find, Simon & River aren't actually there yet, so finding the settlement wouldn't help with finding Simon - they'd still have to spend an undetermined amount of time searching by foot.

Oh! Something to add - From what I remember, Summer Glau was an accomplished dancer but she broke her big toe which caused her to miss out on being a professional dancer. So anytime she can incorporate dance into her roles, she'll do it, which is something seen in this episode as River dances with the crowd :)

Mal is really a great leader. He would have made a good military officer. He's great at sizing up situations and quickly deciding what needs to be done. His decision to leave Simon and River seemed harsh at first, but he knew that Book's situation was critical. It was the greater need. Another great example is in episode 3 Bushwacked. Once he realized he couldn't run from the Alliance and they would be boarded, he also knew the Alliance would find the stolen goods. So hiding them would only make matters worse. He also knew how to hide Simon and River from them. I kind of miss this format of show too. It's a procedural with episodes that are pretty well contained. But there's still an element of serial to it. Some story lines continue or re-emerge, and characters do develop. It seems that a lot of recent great shows are strictly serials. Not all, but a lot.

It's worth noting, when River said "Daddy will come for us and take us home", she was talking about Mal.

The settlers were complete amateurs in terms of identifying witches. I saw no scale to determine if she weighs the same as a duck anywhere.

I enjoyed the episode, the next one is gonna be great, but this has some nice touches. Kaylee's reaction to the Doctor's description of Serenity, ranks right up there with Scotty (James Doohan) getting into a fight with Klingons after one of them suggested that the Enterprise deserved to be towed away as garbage. Fortunately the Doctor didn't have to face the Wrath of Kaylee! Inara convincing Mal where to go for medical help led to an intriguing concept, good thing it worked out. Nice to see River didn't get burned, but MAN! she's got ears like Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff) from MASH.#TimeToGo
