Case 221: Frank & Carol Hilley

Ad-free, early release.

In May 1975, 45-year-old Frank Hilley began experiencing severe nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps in his home in Anniston, Alabama. He died just over a week later. Soon after, his wife Marie Hilley began to receive threatening phone calls, messages and damage to her property. When her teenage daughter Carol Hilley began to show the same symptoms as her late father, Marie flew into a panic trying to get to the bottom of what was happening. However, everything was turned on its head when Marie was arrested for writing bad checks.

My first thought on reading the intro is anti-freeze.

AR

I let out an actual shriek of excitement when I got a few minutes into the intro and it abruptly clicked what case this was. I actually had to stop and come exclaim about it. This case is a perfect fit for Casefile, one I have been wanting you guys to do forever, and the way you framed the intro already is great, can't wait to hear the rest!!

AR

Or "antifree" as Stacey Castor would say

Vincent

“When her teenage Carol Hilley” - just wanted to point out there’s a word missing in the episode description on iTunes podcast. This is not meant as a criticism!

Brenda Wells

Thought maybe you guys uploaded the wrong story until I was ~12 minutes in!

Tegan

This was just … I gasped out loud multiple times

Mandy G

How on earth have I lived in Alabama my whole life and never heard of this story before?!?!

CSJ

Came here to investigate this 😂

Ruth Akers

And then when they switched into Frank and Carol I thought my podcast player had skipped to a new case. What a wild ride.

Claire

These are my favorite types of Casefile mysteries. Just jaw-dropping stories where I never see that twist coming! Great episode.

Andrea Johnson

WOW this Marie woman is a piece of work!

Amber

The level of manipulation this woman was capable of is astounding. Imagine being such a sociopath that you poison literally anyone, including neighborhood kids?? John staying by her side and loving her is one of the greatest mysteries of all. Excellent storytelling CF team!

Kristin Røe

Excellent episode as usual, but I think Casey misspoke when he said that Marie and the neighbor "enjoyed" more nuisance phone calls 🤔

Megan

Her being buried next to Frank is awful. That poor man can’t even escape her in death.

David J Osborne

This case blew my tiny crime podcast mind 😬😂🤯

Ruth Tilleard

What a wild ride that was!

Megan Fields

One of my fav recent episodes!

TN Melbourne

Great episode. It’s difficult to believe how John could be so gullible.

Ruka

This case is whack!!! What brilliant storytelling too, I couldn't figure out where anything was going until it all finally clicked.

Cate Ness

How have I never heard about this?! Wowza... quite the tangled web.
