This was a 90’s romcom, how did it go under my radar? Hugh Grant was perfect, I needed him back in my good books after he was the Paddington villain! We really had a great time with it, awesome supporting cast, funny AND lovey!

The first wedding reminds me of the time I was best man at my mate’s wedding. I pretended I had forgotten the rings and was searching in my pockets for it. We had arranged this beforehand of course. I saw a video of this later on and the camera person got a shot of a lady looking relieved and cracking up at the same time.

Screw the super hero and scary movies - give the ladies what they want - more rom coms. They aren't a new invention, they've been around for decades. Just remember the date night movies you saw in the 70's, 80's and 90's (and earlier). There are plenty to choose from. And more westerns, for gods sake.

Even though I had never seen this before I knew it would be enjoyed by the ladies. That is because they love "Notting Hill" and "Love Actually" which have the same writer as this Richard Curtis... pretty sure this movie is what brought him to prominence. The song in the first wedding that seemed familiar is "Love is all around" which was a massive worldwide hit for "Wet, Wet, Wet" based on it being in this movie... their version plays in the credits. The song is familiar because Bill Nighy's character in "Love Actually" releases a version of the song called "Christmas is all around", so it is a runner through the entire movie. Never much of a Hugh Grant fan, but I listened to him on "Smartless" a couple of days back and enjoyed it quite a bit. And, I did enjoyed his work in a couple of Guy Ritchie movies in the past 10 years, "The man from U.N.C.L.E" and "The Gentlemen", probably a couple of suggestions for the channel.

Never saw this before. It was very charming and definitely british. As others have said the writer Richard Curtis also made Notting Hill, Love Actually, Bridget Jones Diary and About Time. So I think he made Cassie's hall of fame by this point.

Oh yes, I'm sure everyone got my joke, but Cassie is getting better and proves she is recognizing more and more actors every week. And of course she is watching everything for the first time, she hasn't seen this movie 5 or 6 times like many of us. Not speaking of the 8 or 9 time I've watched THE MUMMY. Hugh Grant makes a great villain—he is hillarious and you love to hate him in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. His sour and snippy Oompa Looma in Wonka is the best (and maybe only really good thing) in that movie. I tend to find Evil & Grumpy Hugh Grant far more interesting. And, by the way, bollocks is a slightly lighter version ofsaying either balls or F**k.

This is a really good movie, but for me it’s maybe a tier below the Notting Hill’s and When Harry Met Sally’s of the world. I think my main issue was with Carrie. I don’t know if it was Andie McDowell or her character, but she didn’t work for me. The side characters on the other hand, I think they nailed! More so than the other movies I mentioned. Richard Curtis nails the side characters everytime!

The thing about Carrie is Charles never committed to her until the end. He never put it out there with certainty. Half way through the movie he tells her he loves her, in a roundabout sort of way, then HE seems to change his mind and go 'no silly idea', so from Carrie's point of view she's waiting for him to be the man, lead with confidence, and tell her what he wants

I was shocked when I read Richard Curtis’s IMDB. It was like a Popcorn highlight reel. He is great at writing for women; that being said, I instantly imagined him as a real life Melvin Udall from “As Good As It Gets”.

I do love this movie, but I find the main characters insufferable. Carrie is clearly an awful person (as noted multiple times in the reaction), and who in their right mind would turn down Kristin Scott Thomas when she's throwing herself at you? Then again, Charles is awful too, so maybe he and Carrie deserve each other.

Yeah, don't get married unless enamored with and love with all your heart the person. What a face that Charles (Hugh Grant) had standing on his initial wedding day. Carrie: "Our timing's been really bad, hasn't it?" Charles: "It's been bad, yes." Carrie: "It's been a disaster." Charles: "... been very bad. God, it's lovely to see you." But had a good ending. I voted for this movie in the poll. I now realize this is a first watch for me. I liked it. Agree that the movie has good side characters and with some character development. I am glad you are getting well over your cold. I like Andie MacDowell in Groundhog Day. I like Hugh Grant in Notting Hill (he is awesome at the banter) and in About a Boy (2002). A beautiful and tender movie I recommend is "Lost in Translation" (2003) starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. I kept picturing John Hannah (Matt) as Batiatus in Spartacus series. James Fleet (Tom) is Reverend Wakefield of Outlander. The Reverend studied Frank's genealogy history with Frank in Scotland. Lastly, the guy (actor Rupert Vansittart) at "The Lucky Boatman" hotel who Carrie avoided had such a recognizable voice to me as the lord in Braveheart who exercised his right under prima nocta to take that young bride into his bed on the night of her wedding. He was also Lord Dunsany who owned the Helwater estate where Jamie was paroled as a groomsman by Lord John Grey in early S3 of Outlander -- if you got that far in the series.

Great reaction, ladies. Watching this, I kept thinking of Rowan Atkinson in Johnny English (2003 - his spoof of Bond), and Hugh Grant in Lair of the White Worm (1988 - maybe a candidate for next SBNTS October, the whole cast seemed like they were having a blast making it). Ps - I’ve been to both hotels that served as The Boatman (one for the exterior shots, one for the interior shots - it’s said you can ask for the room with the actual four-poster bed from their first night together).

Kristen Scott Thomas played Fiona, who was the woman in love with Charles is in The English Patient with Ralph Fiennes. It is an epic Romance/ War movie. It won the Oscar for Best Picture and Director. Nine total Oscars out of twelve nominations and I highly recommend it.

I could not remember the ending to this. It was Great… I guess :-) Definitely loved it a lot more than I remembered. Richard Curtis knows how to make Rom Coms for Guys. Four Weddings, Notting Hill, About Time, Yesterday… are all films with a male lead that I can relate to. These are all some of my favorite films, with Four Weddings moving up a little in my Feel Good Film rankings. Out of those four… it still ranks 4th. I can’t say for sure if I would have made the same decision as Charles. As much as I love Andie MacDowell… See… Groundhog Day (1993) Bad Girls (1994) Multiplicity (1996) Michael (1996) The Carrie character, played by her, seemed possibly problematic. There were A Lot of red flags. Fiona, on the other hand, seemed like someone I’d like to get to know more. I mean what was wrong with her. I guess she was too good a friend to him, from his perspective. From my perspective, having just met these people, and having the feeling of looking for someone to love and someone to love me back… Fiona was it. That group of friends was the best part, and it only seemed right to marry within the friendship, so to speak. This group dynamic was very similar to the friends in Notting Hill. Those are the kind of friends I’ve always hoped to have. The sister’s birthday party/first date scene in Notting Hill, is maybe my favorite scene from any Rom Com. I couldn’t remember how Four Weddings ended, but I was really hoping he would go to Fiona. I just wasn’t 100% on Carrie. I was pretty sure she was only marrying Hamish for his money and stature. Fiona was the Duckie :-( Fiona was played by Kristen Scott Thomas, who both you saw in the first Mission Impossible (1996). She was a part of the team in the first mission, that went wrong. She is a very beautiful and talented actress, and to see more of her, I recommend… The Horse Whisperer (1998)… with Robert Redford and Sam Neill Random Hearts (1999)… with Harrison Ford Gosford Park (2001)… All-Star cast Murder Mystery by the creator of Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, who won an Oscar for his screenplay. And especially Recommend, the 12 time Oscar nominated and Winner of 9 Academy Awards… The English Patient (1996) — This Reaction was a Delight. Thank You. It certainly was the perfect ending to… a One Fine Day ;-)

Thanks for watching this. It’s been awhile and I forgot how awesome it is. We really need to get you watching some Kristen Scott Thomas films. She is fabulous. I’m sure people are already recommending Gosford Park and the English Patient which are both wonderful. She was also in the Darkest Hour which is great. Less well known but also worth watching: Military Wives, Easy Virtue, and Keeping Mum. If you can get your hands on that last one…it’s kind of fantastic and hilarious.

From what I can gather (first time watching myself) Fiona was the sister of one of his other friends. And since he's clearly aware of his issues with relationships falling apart rapidly he didn't want to potentially cause a rift that big and thus she was 'off the table' from early on in the friendship.

Splendid reaction. Splendid. 😀 I hadn’t watched this movie in ages, so I only remembered bits and pieces, but it was highly entertaining, especially with the reactions. If I’m not mistaken, this was Hugh Grant’s big break that launched him to international fame, and the character of Charles left a lasting impression on his career, with many of his later roles being somewhat similar. That said, my favorite Richard Curtis and Hugh Grant film is still Notting Hill. For a lesser known suggestion I would like to highly recommend the movie KEEPING MUM (2005). It's a charming British dark comedy starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Rowan Atkinson, Maggie Smith and Patrick Swayze. PS: Rowan Atkinson will turn 70 in January 2025. How about having a dedicated poll to celebrate him? This could even become a new PiB tradition, hosting special polls for actors or directors on milestone anniversaries. Fun reaction first time i've seen the film which is probably quite bad being a brit myself and how popular it was in the UK when it came out, I think Love is all around me by Wet Wet Wet was number 1 in the charts for many months. Didn't think it was as funny as the 1994 trailers made it appear to me though, Rowan (Mr. Bean) was kind of the comedic highlight although I did really like a lot of the characters(I think I got a crush on Scarlet) and in particular Gareth. Gareth's actor(Simon Carlow) was the bad guy in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. He's also unexpectedly in the Disney+ show Hawkeye, which benefited greatly for being only one season or a miniseries. It's a GREAT short 6 episode wholesome but cool Christmas series in the MCU if you're up for it! 92% on RT!
