Hey guys! Here is the full reaction to The Desolation of Smaug! I watched the extended version of the first movie so I thought it would be good to continue that trend, but it seems like a few people are having a hard time finding a copy. I purchased mine on Amazon from the link below.. let me know if I should just watch the theatrical release for the 3rd or continue with the extended versions. Thanks for being here!

Also, sorry for the issue with the timer in this one - I'm not sure what happened on export. Hopefully you can visually sync it at the beginning, or maybe even use the sound of the film in the background.

Enjoy!

Stay with the extended, some of the extra scenes are fun to watch

Serenity

This is my first extended watch through. I have to say that I enjoyed all the new scenes in "Unexpected Journey" - I felt like they added to a movie that felt awkward. I didn't feel as much about it in the "Desolation of Smaug". The excess Mirkwood scenes weren't really needed and I feel like the addition of scenes to the Smaug vs Dwarf confrontation wasn't necessary, either. In fact, the addition of those scenes seemed to detract from it a little bit. With that said, I found that the lengthened opening with Thorin's search for his father, as well as the scenes of Gandalf's exploration and finding of Thrain, are amazing. It was a horrible decision to cut those out, along with all this background information of what happened to the dwarven rings of power. I look forward to watching the extended "Battle of the Five Armies" next with you!

This was my favorite of the hobbit movies. I think the ring hasn't corrupted Bilbo just yet because Sauron hasn't regain enough power, he is still in "hidding". And also I think Bilbo had a stronger will then Frodo. Him and Sam were the only 2 people to ever let it go willingly. (Just a theory, technically Boramir also returned the ring but that only happened in the movies)

Kevin

Cameos: At 1:30:40 is a man who looks suspiciously like Stephen Colbert. He is a major JRR Tolkien fan and jumped at the chance to be in the movies. He wasn't able to be in the Lord of the Rings movies but got in The Hobbit. At the beginning of the movie (1:15) one of the first people we see is Peter Jackson himself (biting a carrot?) making his best Alfred Hitchcock impression.

Naryma

Your daughter in the background is so sweet!

Cassie Tremblay

Ok that is interesting that those were the scenes that were not in the theatrical. I wonder why they would take out some of that, especially about the dwarf ring and Thrain. I'm watching #3 tonight. Actually quite excited!

Cassie Tremblay

That makes sense about Sauron not having enough power at this point. You know, I didn't love Bilbo in the LOTR so if anything these movies have made me love Bilbo! Hobbits are heroes :)

Serenity

It also makes Bilbo's scenes in the LOTR that much more heartbreaking, too!

I know you are enjoying these and I'm very happy you are. It's just that I know Tolkein is rolling over in his grave from these. A dwarf and an elf falling in love, wow. I wish Jackson could have found a way to rein it in some.

Steve Smith

The worst part of the Fili and Tauriel love story in the Hobbit was after Bolg stabbed Fili and then patiently waited for them to have their little tender love gaze at each other before he Fili died.

Quacksalver Extraordinaire

The CGI of Smaug was absolutely top notch and still stands up today. The CGI that most people dislike is in the upcoming film. Aside from cameos of the actors filmed during pickups, the third film was done almost entirely in a computer environment. The reason was that the decision to go from two to three films was made after principle photography had wrapped.

Quacksalver Extraordinaire

For me, the best thing about these three films is the casting. As I've said before, Martin Freeman as Bilbo is inspired. Benedict Cumberbatch's voicing of Smaug is positively chilling. (Oh, and yes, Smaug does speak in the book.) Each of the dwarves were equally well cast. Richard Armitage brought a lot of gravitas to the role of Thorin and Ken Stott a lot of warmth as Balin (whose tomb the fellowship discovers in Moria). You might also recognize Graham McTavish (Dwalin) from Outlander and Aiden Turner (Kili, the hot dwarf) of Poldark fame.

Hey, the video on youtube seems to be blocked and the download link brings me to a download of the first hobbit movie

Benjamin Gerrald

The link is still wrong and the youtube link is broken. Bummer

Andrew Roach

Wow, no movie except a blurred image and no sound, I know WB has no right to block this. Perhaps put the reaction video back up but remove the blurred movie so it is only your reaction? Put just a moment of the movie at the start to sync to.
