[17:32] Carly: I'd be the one driving the bus. Cassie: I'd be crying in the back. Cassie! That's no way to talk to your sister in public! And given your own history, should you really be putting down her driving like that?! :-) :-) :-)

“I think it was called, ‘The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down’”

David Woodbridge

There's a perfectly reasonable scientific explanation for why the bus was able to jump the 50-foot gap. Buses get 1 foot of jumping capability for every mile per hour they go (1 mph = 1 ft. of air). Since the bus in the movie was going above 50 mph, it would, according to the laws of physics, fly 50 feet in the air if driven off a ledge. This is just a scientific fact.

Ria Grix

Yeh, I heard that Harry, at the very last moment, managed to jump behind a particularly well made oak dining table that shielded him from the blast. Ending up in hospital with only third degree burns to his chin and his left thumb. He decided to retire early and lives in a nice little place just outside Seattle. Jack visits regularly.

Of course there was the excellent episode of Father Ted that parodied this movie with a milk float (a slow electric vehicle used to deliver milk locally) https://youtu.be/OSstu2tzrng

Michael_AP

Nope. The bus will crash. As our 2 clever girls pointed out, the bus needs an incline to make the jump. Even a rifle-projectile travelling at nearly the speed of sound will loose height pretty fast. That's the reason the sight of a rifle is adjusted so the barrel is actually pointing a bit upwards compared to what you are aiming at, Otherwise you would have to take the drop in account even at short distances. You actually experience it in you daily life. A bicycle (or other transport means) that passes even a small hole in the pavement will not clear the hole without dropping and hence you feel the impact on the far side of the hole. Just imagine you coming with 15 mph per hour on your bike. Would you be able to cross a 15 foot gap in the road. It needs an incline to work.

I seem to recall a vaguely similar movie where the Harry (Jeff Daniels) character is revealed to be the bad guy. Can anyone help out me wee pore brain?

Variable38

When Speed was initially written that was going to happen but they changed it. Maybe you heard that.

Jay

Speed 3 is one of the all time great sequels:)

S Elphick

Speed is a great film just don’t bother with the sequel it’s terrible

I always wondered why the police never once tried to trace Payne’s number every time he was talking to Jack on the phone.

GamerGal8684

Most likely because the traces would take too long and as an ex officer, he would know they were tracing. That was one thing about Payne, not dumb. Angry and greedy, yup. Dumb. Nope lol.

Johnny

@Michael_AP - No need for the long winded explanation, everyone knows it isn't possible in real life. David was obviously joking btw.

Michael_AP

And that went completely over my head..... like bus jumping over my head 😑 LOL

Stephen Malloy

For me Speed always recalls the 1970’s movie Juggernaut, about a disgruntled former bomb squad guy who planted several bombs on a cruise ship. Cast included Richard Harris, Omar Sharif and a very young Anthony Hopkins.

Happy Hanukkah

Thanks for this interesting bit of trivia [short version: they realized that doing this well would require too much time and decided to streamline the movie], but unless younger me had an incredibly vivid(er) imagination, this isn't it.

Really enjoyed this reaction ladies, you two are a blast (pun intended).😆 This movie is just about perfect for what it is. The 80s and 90s really had so many classic action films. Cheers!
