Well the boys are back together again....or together to start? It was like buddy cop, but buddy bank robbers! I loved their back and forth and especially Butch Cassidy.  I have been reading about how much was true and what not and what a crazy story. I am glad to finally put some faces and stories behind these names I have always heard about!

[Full Reaction] Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

Randolph Tirazona

Me and my brother saw this on Thee Silver Screen! šŸ˜ƒ

Alex Gorell

One of my favorite movies. But now Every time I see this movie and the bicycle scene comes on all I see is Jeremy Clarkson on a Porsche 928. I know at least one person here will know what Iā€™m referencing.

Bill Maurer

It's a great movie, glad you enjoyed it.

Tommy.J

Katharine Ross has been Married to Cowboy Sam Elliott for 40 years. A woman who can nab Redford and Newman in one movie, and Sam Elliot in real life must be one hell of a woman.

Jon Johns

Cherry, just about anything cherry! šŸ’in North California there is a jelly belly factory that sells belly flops! The ones that don't quite looked right. They are cheap, and sometimes are two flavors stuck together! Yummy jelly bellys...šŸ«˜

Sophie Gallo

Yes!! And Hammond looking confused in the cabinšŸ˜‚ Original Top Gear is the best!

Jon Johns

I showed this film to my kid, several years ago, he groaned about how slow it was, and wondered why there were so many shots of landscapes. I had to explain that back then, we didn't have the Discovery channel, or "Planet Earth" documentary in 4K... The big silver screen theaters were the only way to see all these places around the world in color, it was amazing, when you only had a 13" black & white TV... He still didn't like it much. Too slow, and a silly plot. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Ben Livingstone

At last, she samples the wonders of Strother Martin!

Yaisu

I hope you still plan on watching 3:10 to Yuma

Ben Livingstone

They're together in CONAGHER. I'm convinced she would love that one--great love story!

Uncle Phoenix

Canā€™t wait to vote for Open Range again.

Michael Lynch

You should definitely consider watching open range. So many people were crying out for it in the comment section and you already said you wanted to watch it.

Choof

Just read Amazon is doing a remake with Rene Jean Page from Bridgerton and Glen Powell from Top Gun Maverick, figured you would be intrigued by that duo haha

Bill Hayden

I had forgotten that this was upcoming. What a pleasant surprise. I just hope that we don't have another CandyGate on the horizon. šŸ˜‰

Richard Bourne

Certainly not a Tombstone. Silverado it about as close as you can get to that. I hadn't seen this in a really long time and did not make it through. Kinda boring to me at least.

Neill Shaughness

FINALLY! This is an all time favorite of mine. A real masterpiece of a screenplay written by the great William Goldman (he also wrote The Princess Bride and the Misery adaptation you saw as well as many other great films) l.

Celeste McAllister

Outlaw folk heroes and anti-heroes were a thing in the flower power days of the late 60's..Bonnie and Clyde 1967 was a big hit in the day..Etta Place returned to the U.S. around 1899,it's said she stayed close to the hole in the wall hoping her boys would come back, after awhile Etta dropped out of sight,Etta's fate and the fate of Butch and Sundance in Bolivia are still a mystery..I love westerns,I love a good bromance'ā™”

Mark Harrell

Yes. True story with embellishment. The end is believed to be what actually happened but some stories of them escaping and living much longer Check out in Wikipedia

Just Plain Bob

Cassie, in your reaction to The Spy Who Loved Me, you kept referring to Jaws as ā€œLurch.ā€ The actor that plays Harvey Logan, who challenges Butch for leadership of the gang, actually played Lurch on the tv show The Addams Family.

Pacmule

To answer your question the vast majority of this film is true. The part that takes place in Bolivia is theorized but they did go there and rob banks and the "official" story is they both died there. There are Butch's family members swore he returned to the states but no real proof either way. I believe Butch was born in Utah. Sundance got his nickname from serving time in Sundance Wy. Butch was a smart cookie unlike in this movie he would go to the local ranchers and stage horses so when he was being chased he had fresh mounts and would wear out the possie chasing them. Great movie thanks for reacting to it. take care

james morrow

if you are liking westerns now try lonesome dove , a great watch

Sean Stuart

Cassie since you liked this you should watch Bandits with Bruce Willis and Cate Blanchett and Billy Bob Thornton. Kind of a modern retelling of this movie came out in early 2000s set then too.

Matt Rose

'ya reckon you used enough dynamite there, Butch?'

Robert da Spruce

Nice reaction Cassie! That was actually the first time watching for me as well! I thought it was pretty good. Like you said, Robert and Paulā€™s chemistry made the film. I particularly liked Paul portrayal of Butch. Speaking of chemistry, I kinda thought Butch and Etta made a better match. As far as Jelly Bellies go, I tend to gravitate towards the fruit flavors. Cherry, strawberry, green apple, watermelon, orange, etcā€¦I donā€™t really care for the creamy flavors you mentioned. Or things like black licorice. I think we could definitely share a bag of Jelly Bellies and not fight over the same flavors! šŸ˜‚ If youā€™re ever in the San Francisco Bay Area you should definitely take the tour at the Jelly Belly factory!

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Well now I know why my dad likes this movie so much, he's not the biggest Western fan but he's mentioned this movie a lot to me over the years, this and Jeremiah Johnson which I also really like. Fun watch, now I'm hoping Cassie watches more Westerns too, I'm getting into them now. Btw, this is the third Paul Newman movie I've noticed that has that little fella, I see his real name is Stronger (Strother, doggone autocorrect) Martin, he was Garris in this, he's also in Cool Hand Luke (probably my favorite Paul Newman movie) and Slapshot. Oh yeah haha, and he was Chong's father in the first Cheech and Chong movie, Up In Smoke.

David Freese

Just thought I'd chime in on a couple of questions: Raindrops Falling In My Head came out the same year by BJ Thomas so it's one of the first times being played in the movie. Sundance Film Festival was named after Sundance Kid. Glad you enjoyed the movie. In my mind I always thought šŸ¤” you might.

KauaiKeith

Love this movie! Thank you for watching - didn't disappoint!

Stick Figure Studios

"Who are those guys?" One of my top 10 favorite westerns. Great cast, great music, great cinematography, great editing and a script that's smart, witty and subversive (written by one of the great Hollywood screenwriters William Goldman who would go on to write THE PRINCESS BRIDE and your first foray into westerns MAVERICK) with one of the greatest closing freeze frame shots in film history). An utter delight from start to finish. Can't wait to see this reaction. :-)

David Collins

!00% Lonesome Dove must happen. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall (who was the crew chief in Days of Thunder and plays opposite Kevin Costner in Open Range) have amazing chemistry in it. The guy who plays News Carver in this one plays a prominent and memorable role as well. Also has Danny Glover from (Lethal Weapon. Great supporting cast. Loads of fun.

Mike LL

Raindrops won Best Song at the Oscars as it was written as part of the filmā€™s score by the great Burt Bacharach who recently passed away.

sharkey197

Yes, you are right. The Sundance Film festival was named after the character of Sundance in this film.

Mike LL

Oh and I looked up that Bacharach not only won another Oscar for the whole film score but he won a Golden Globe and a Grammy also for this filmā€™s score so he had a pretty good year in 1969.

Jesus F Christ

Not only did Robert Redford use the name Sundance for his film festival, Paul Newman created The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for seriously ill children. https://www.holeinthewallgang.org/ Paul Newman used to make batches of a homemade vinaigrette salad dressing, bottle them and give them to his friends. Then he was convinced to make it for sale and donate all the profits to charity. That kicked off his Newman's Own line of food products (salad dressings, salsas, pasta sauces, etc.) which has given millions of dollars to charity since it's inception. It can be argued that without the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Film Institute we'd never have had the indie film boom of the 1990s that gave us directors like Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky, Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, Robert Rodriguez, or Richard Linklater.

Wesley White

makes me so happy that you watched this movie, it's one of my Dad's personal favorites of his! I don't know much about the real story of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, other than they were outlaws of the Wild West lol! great movie, great reaction, haven't watched this movie in ages! I don't know if you probably noticed, but Sam Elliot (Virgil from Tombstone) was also in this movie, in fact this was his film debut, though his acting career got started on stage before film lol! I'm sure he played one of the gang members of Butch Cassidy's wild bunch, I forget which one! let alone I'm sure someone's already said this, but the actress in this movie is Katharine Ross, whom Sam Elliot eventually married when after they stared together in a film called "The Legacy" I think, never seen it lol! but, it was this film was how they met and are still married to this day! my favorite part that makes me laugh but at the same time makes me cringe in pain is the knife fight scene, Paul Newman's snarky attitude is just gold, the way he tricks one of his men about the "rules" in a knife fight, and just kicks where it hurts, gets me every time lolšŸ¤£ yup, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, they just have such good chemistry when working together, just like in The Sting! glad you enjoyed this movie Cassie, despite it's bummer ending lol! hey, who doesn't like westerns, and since you once said of thinking of watching more John Wayne westerns, I still recommend my favorite of his that he did, "Chisum"! I also recommend others that he did like "True Grit", "The Cowboys", "The Shootist", and "McClintock" those are good ones too! hope you're having a wonderful weekend, much love and support, and stay classy Cassie lolšŸ„°šŸ˜šŸ˜‰šŸ‘

Gary David Holbrook

Learn something new every day! I have watched this movie countless times over the years, and I did not realize until watching it again last night, that Agnes/the "lady of the evening" that hooks up with Butch Cassidy was played by Cloris Leachman. This lady has always kicked ass in her many and various roles! Some may also remember her as Frau BlĆ¼cher in Young Frankenstein. This was icing on the cake as I watched your full reaction.

Odd Thomas

For more Katharine Ross: The Graduate Robert Redford: The Old Man and the Gun Paul Newman: Road to Perdition

Mike LL

You hit the nail on the head that this is a "subversive anti-Western" (that phrase is not off the top of my head, but from an online article I read about this movie). Anti-heroes were all the rage during this period of anti-establishment feeling, and this movie reminds me of the other famous anti-Western of 1969, Sam Peckenpah's The Wild Bunch. For a more traditional Western from 1969, the original True Grit, but even that was a more modern Western because they tried to copy the speaking styles of the times and from the source novel.

Mike LL

It is true that TOMBSTONE is the closest she has come to a traditional Western, and Silverado is very much like Tombstone. It is funny that she has watched one traditional Western, two aniti-Westerns, Butch and Sundance and Unforgiven, and one comedy Western, Maverick, and a foreign Western, Sergio Leone's TGTB&TU. It just goes to show that they have been able to transplant any genre of movie into a Western, there have been mystery Westerns, traditional action shoot-em ups, comedies, heist films, and in the last few decades even sci-fi Westerns. I hope we can get more traditional Westerns like Silverado, Open Range, and many others

Mike LL

I love that during the extended long posse chase scene that didn't have much of a musical score that Cassie provided her own Western musical cues, instinctively going to William Tell's Overture and even an Ennio Morricone Waa Waaaa!

Mike McLaughlin

Loved watching the tumblers click in as you figured the relationship Sundance Film Festival and Robert Redford and this movie had together. Hey, here's one additional life relationship, Paul Newman co-founded a salad dressing and spaghetti sauce company who's after-tax profits go to charity. It's name is "Newman's Own". You may have heard of it. It has donated over $570 Million as of 2021. He was married to actress Joanne Woodward from 1958 to his death in 2008. He had auto racing team and also raced cars in road rallies and closed circuit race courses. Quite the man's man.

Yaisu

This is one of those rare instances where I actually prefer the remake to the original.

Yaisu

I kind of want you to watch Blackthorn now.

Odd Thomas

I'm probably in the minority but I loved Cowboys and Aliens, with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. It's a surprisingly fun mashup by Jon 'Iron Man' Favreau.

Stick Figure Studios

And I would argue that even TOMBSTONE isn't a traditional western so much as it's just a standard 90s action movie in western garb. I'd love for her to watch a standard classic Western like STAGECOACH, THF SEARCHERS or THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. Not an anti-western, not a neo-western and not a western spoof (nothing wrong with those). Just a good old-fashioned oater.

William Bryan

Just sittin here waiting for the late Sep and Oct reactions lol

Tommy.J

They've both seem like really good guys! Cassie has like a dozen Paul Newman movies to watch. I just watched The Verdict for the first time. Great court room drama. His performance was amazing.

Tommy.J

I just rewatched "The Cowboys". I saw it in the theatre when I was a kid. The ending freaked me out as an 8 year old. You know why. Bruce Dern is a creepy bad guy. Still a really good movie! All the young actors are excellent. It has one of John Williams best soundtracks. So good! I think every young boy should watch this movie. Make you want to be a cowboy. I just watch a 50 reunion of the young actors. A couple of them became a Cowboy for real after making the movie.

Tommy.J

They met making The Legacy in 1978. I never knew she 5 years older than him. You don't hear that too much in Hollywood.

Tommy.J

Ten years ago I showed my daughter "The Poseidon Adventure"(1972) & "The Towering Inferno"(1974). She loved them both.

Tommy.J

I just watched the original because of this poll. The remake is much better, but Glenn Ford was a great actor. He had a real style about him. Over shadowed the other guy big time. Were in the remake Bale and Crowe are equal as actors.

Larry Darrell

She might recognize Timothy Scott, who played News Carver, from Footloose, too. He played Andy Beamis, Ren's friend who got him the job at Lehi Roller Mills.

Mike LL

Yes, you have a point about TOMBSTONE not being a traditional Western also. I too want a plain old standard Western.

Larry Darrell

Strother Martin and Paul Newman both appeared in Six Films. The Silver Chalice (1954), Harper (1966), Cool Hand Luke (1967), Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (1969), Pocket Money (1972), Slap Shot (1977)

Larry Darrell

Nobody's Fool (1994) has always been a favorite Thanksgiving film for myself.

BRT

This one is worth watching just for all the clever banter between Newman and Redford. "Most of what follows is true" Not really, or even authentic.....but then again most Westerns are idealizations, so... In reality, Butch did try to broker an amnesty with the Governor who seems to have been cooperative. He said that Butch would have to first get Mr. E.H.Harriman of Union Pacific to drop charges. Harriman seems to have been willing but before they could all meet and get the deal to go through, Butch and Sundance robbed another of the company's trains. They did flee to South America but it was first to Argentina where they actually purchased a 15000 acre ranch. A letter exists that butch wrote to a friend in Utah stating "our little family of 3 living in a 4 room house with 300 cattle, 1500 sheep, and 28 horses." They screwed it up though because Pinkertons were keeping an eye out for them when they gave into the urge to rob a bank. They fled to Chile and made a few more robberies before Sundance escorted Etta back to the U.S. with Butch remaining and Sundance returning within a few months and this is when they both worked at the tin mine, guarding the payroll. In late 1907 is when they both moved to Bolivia, still intending to settle down as respectable ranchers. In late 1908 in Bolivia, a courier carrying a payroll for the Aramayo Mine was attacked and robbed by two masked American bandits believed to be Butch and Sundance near San Vincente. They were both lodged in San Vincente and their landlord became suspicious because they had a mule from the Aramayo Mine, identifiable from the company's brand. Officials surrounded the house, planning to arrest them but a gunfight broke out. In the wee hours, two gunshots were heard inside the house, then nothing else . In the morning it was discovered they were both dead in the house, presumably one was severely wounded and the other shot him before shooting himself. The two bodies were buried in the San Vicente cemetery. Now the reason I wrote all this is because there's a twist... IT was well known throughout the 20th century that there were stories purporting that Butch Cassidy was seen alive in the U.S. as late as 1927. A number of his relatives claimed that he had been to visit them numerous times. His sister claimed that he actually died in Washington state in 1937 of pneumonia. It wasn't until the mid 1980s that DNA tech was available to attempt matching DNA from family members with that of deceased remains. In 1991, an expedition to the cemetery in San Vincente, Bolivia to the graves considered to be that of Butch and Sundance did not turn up a profile that matched with either family. In 2019, info was followed up on that Butch had been buried at a specific spot on his family's property in Utah. Human bones were indeed located at this spot but unfortunately by this time there was not enough usable DNA in them to complete a profile. So, I guess the truth of their death in San Vincente or their survival will never be known for sure.

BRT

Same for me! Can't believe I never caught that before but of course last time I saw this was on network broadcast television, so no telling how bad the resolution was.

Rick Williams

Great reaction, Sweet Face. Yes, the story is mostly true. Although there is some dispute over whether they actually died in Bolivia. Some claim they make it back to the states. Good movie. And yes, Cassie you should do more westerns. There are a number of good ones left to watch.

John G

Glad you liked it sweet face!

Terry Yelmene

Paul Newman was one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood history. The same can be said of Rodert Redford. IMHO, they were absolutely magical when they came together.

China Andronicus

I'm so glad this won the vote! It's been a favorite since my dad shared it when I was little. I absolutely love Sundance (definitely my favorite of the two) and the dynamic between the two characters. I was worried the ending would tear you up more but I guess that being sort of led into it rather than hit out of nowhere helped you deal with it. I'm so happy you enjoyed it!

Bill Hayden

It was over on YouTube. Someone complained that Cassie was eating candy in bed, and making NOISE. (the horror) Some have even complained about her eating popcorn in bed. Thankfully, Cassie just goes on being, Cassie.

Bill Hayden

The miniseries Lonesome Dove, or the classic, The Man who Shot Liberty Valance.

Celeste McAllister

Paul Newman's eyes and Robert Redford's smile had me from the start, best friends off screen playing best friends on screen! :)

Connor P

with how close 3:10 to Yuma scored to this (33 % to 35%, nearly a tie), it'd be great to see a reaction to that as well! :)

Two words: Lonesome Dove.

Alex Villarreal

They used to give it on TV a lot and loved it when I was 12. Director David Fincher adores this movie and credits it with giving him the dream of being a director. But apart from excellent filmmaking, his movies SEVEN and ZODIAC donā€™t have much in common with this one.

barnabas

My all-time favorite Western is Hombre (1967), also starring Paul Newman. For many years I considered it my favorite MOVIE, but a lot of great films have come out since then; still one of my favorite movies though. I recommend it for anyone who (like Cassie and Carly) thought Aragorn shouldn't have stopped Theoden killing Wormtongue, or who is still mad about the Star Wars re-edit having Greedo shoot first (George Lucas, meet John Russell)!

Brian Harris

Redford is still alive. Paul Newman passed away quite a while ago, sadly. I think Redford is great, especially what heā€™s done for movies offscreen (founding Sundance, great director, etc). But Newman is a legend. A better actor than Redford and one of the greatest screen presences of all time.

Je suis Napoleon

I hope you get to watch Jeremiah Johnson soon, it's another great Robert Redford western!

Alex Villarreal

Just noticed Kenneth Mars and Cloris Leachman are in this, two Mel Brooks regulars.

Richard Maurer

Haven't watched this since I was in my early teens, It's actually better than I remember it being. I think I can appreciate it more now that I'm older.

China Andronicus

I didnā€™t even notice Mars (though I knew about Leachman). For the first time, I picked up on Woodcock being played by George Furth from Blazing Saddles! That voice was so recognizable!

Matt Mabry

Katherine Ross is married to Sam Elliott and for quite some time as well. Raindrops keep falling on my head is a classic. B.J. Thomas performed. The some is by Burt Baccarat, I think.

Clay F

Good reaction and good movie. I have watched the movie a couple of times before, but it has been a few years. When this movie was released, Paul Newman was 44 and Robert Redford was 33. They make a charismatic dynamic duo. I was age 6 when this movie was released. As a kid, I liked the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" [reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100]. I also liked other hits by B.J. Thomas, such as "Hooked on a Feeling (1969)" and "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song." B. J. Thomas died of cancer in 2021. R.I.P. Robert Redford movies to consider: -ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN (1976 [w/Dustin Hoffman] [AFI Top 100] [I watched a zillion times] -OUR SOULS AT NIGHT (2017) [w/Jane Fonda] -BRUBAKER (1980) -THE HORSE WHISPERER (1998) [w/teen Scarlett Johansson] -SPY GAME (2001) [w/Brad Pitt] For Paul Newman, consider: -COOL HAND LUKE (1967) -THE HUSTLER (1961) [w/Jackie Gleason] -THE COLOR OF MONEY (1986) [w/Tom Cruise]
