Dearest Cassie, you know how some movies that intend to age well, just don’t? Given the sort of expositionary ‘news’ report that opens this film: “What began as a conflict in the Caucasus has now become Civil War in Russia!”….. I might offer this film as one that didn’t necessarily intend to age well, but, frighteningly, it has.

I think most films INTEND to age well. If the story is interesting and the performances are good, they generally do. You're saying that the film didn't hold up, until now, and when the warfare is over, the film will be irrelevant again?

Good gracious no! So long as we put nuclear weapons, anywhere on the planet in the control of men, this story will always be relevant. No matter how carefully we lay our safeguards, the world, life and/or human failings will interact with those safeguards in potentially species-ending ways. I always felt the setup to the story was the weakest part of this film. You take the highly ordered and regimented world of nuclear launch procedures and introduce chaos into the mix for this sequence of events to be plausible. I’m a historian. Historians love irony and it’s ironic that what before had been the weakest part of this particular story has now become far more plausible.

Dearest Cassie, my absolute favorite part of this movie is the Captain’s and XO’s conversation about the famous Lippizaner Stallions. From memory, one argues they’re from Portugal, the other Spain. The very purposefully written irony is that they’re BOTH wrong. Those famous white horses are and have always been Austrian. I don’t for one second think the writers were anything but intentional with that fact. Both men, both viewpoints, are, in fact wrong.

I would steer any interested to the, I believe GQ series on YT. There’s an episode where a former nuclear missile submarine skipper reviews this movie. From memory, he concluded that, right or wrong, the procedures state clearly that if both officers are not in agreement, missiles do not get launched no matter what. No Captain, under these conditions, can replace his XO for disagreeing with him. Those simply are the procedures as written.

Ian, I just rewatched it. If you’ll invest a few minutes of your valuable time, the former skipper answers your question and, I believe, it falls in line with the Lippizaner scene; both officers are wrong.

Ballistic missile subs are only 1 leg in the nuclear triad. We also have land based ICBM’s and strategic bombers. It would never have come down to 1 missile sub to launch a preemptive strike. This is a dramatic movie, nothing more. This movie is “loosely” based off of a supposed incident that occurred in the Soviet Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I served onboard US fast attack subs and my brother served onboard US ballistic missile subs and we both had a good laugh at what was portrayed in the movie after it came out.

Cassie I loved this reaction. I've never seen Carly so animated! Another great suspenseful submarine movie is U571 with an all star cast including Matthew McConaughey. Also a suspenseful reality film that I think you would love is "13 days" starring Kevin Costner. It's about the Cuban missile crisis under the Kennedy administration. Bye 😊

The fact that you don't know Gene Hackman as the coach from the 1986 movie Hoosiers is a crime. The next time you are looking at a sports movie poll that really should be on the list. Hoosier is a movie right up your alley. It's too bad we missed March Madness.

I'm not talking about historical or socio-political relevance. I'm just talking about cinematic relevance. Film making as it applies to the viewer- script/dialogue, cinematography, acting, editing etc. Regardless of what's happening in the real world, it is captivating within the world inside that film.

It's not entirely made up. It's based on real events on a Soviet sub during the Cuban Missile Crisis. For another film that "aged well" for all the wrong reasons, I recommend "The Siege" also starring Denzel.

Cassie and Carly another wonderful reaction. For a couple of outstanding movies staring Denzel Washington, both highly suspenseful: The Bone Collector (1999) with Angelina Jolie) and The Pelican Brief (with Julia Roberts) 1993. I also want to second Kevin suggestion of U571, (2000) great cast, great action and great suspense.

Crimson Tide is a good movie and I loved your reaction to it. But I still wait and hope to see you react to the MOTHER of ALL submarine movies! Das Boot! It was made by Wolfgang Petersen in 1981.He also made The Neverending Story, Enemy Mine and Outbreak. So Please! Please, please, please! Watch Das Boot

For another film with similar themes, I Recommend… The Caine Mutiny (1954), starring Humphrey Bogart, Fred MacMurray and Van Johnson Takes place during WWII, but is a fictional story, based on Herman Wouk’s novel of the same name.

Several people mentioned U-571 which made me think of the German Enigma machine which, in turn, made me think of the very underrated Sneakers starring Robert Redford. Definitely worth a watch.

Watched a couple episodes. Not all that familiar with the show. Wouldn’t really be able to comment to much about surface warfare in general because I wouldn’t have that expertise. I would know a bit more about ASW (Anti Sub) in regards to how our own Navy dealt with our subs during training exercises. In the most general terms, there is similarities between the two (surface vs submarine warfare) in the fact that the enlisted are trained to operate and repair the ship and the officers are trained to “fight” the ship tactically.

I didn’t know this, but I read that apparently Quentin Tarantino was brought in to do uncredited touch ups to the dialogue in the script for this movie. The most notable being the bickering about comic books lol

Bah. Not sure it's the kind of movie she/they would enjoy. It's weird how people recommend content without regard to compatibility. Although Cassie has broadened her horizons a lot, I just don't see her having fun with a slow-paced 3h+ long subtitled submarine flick. And I say that as a fan of the movie.

Late to the party as usual but I wanted to say that this was such a fantastic reaction to one of my favorite submarine movies ever! Such incredible acting by Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman and a premise that really cranked up the suspense. It was clear that you and Carly were on the proverbial edge of your seats which was such a treat to watch. Even on repeat viewings, this film can still feel very suspenseful. I was sad that the exchange between Denzel's character and the radio operator Vossler which referenced Star Trek was not included in the YT edit. The scene when Denzel calls to check on the radio saying "This is Captian Kirk" always gave me a laugh. Star Trek was arguably in its heyday in the mid 90s when Crimson Tide came out so the reference was timely. Lastly, this may have already been mentioned above (I didnt read all the comments) but this film was made by the late Tony Scott who directed the original Top Gun. Tony Scott was the brother of Ridley Scott who directed both Alien and Blade Runner which you may not-so-fondly remember. :)

New to the Patreon and channel so I'm just catching up on these movies. While the story is fiction it isn't to say that we didn't come that close to nuclear war. 1983 seemed to be the big year. In September the Soviet early warning system indicated a US launch on the Soviet Union. A Soviet officer Stanislav Petrov went against his training believing the system to be malfunctioning and did not report the launch. Protocol would have been for the Soviets to launch before it could be verified that the incoming missile tracks were false. A similar event had happened on the US side in 1979 where US warning systems indicated first that there were 250 incoming Soviet Missiles and then updated that to 2200. A decision to retaliate would need to be made by the president within 3 to 7 minutes. Strategic Air Command was notified, and nuclear bombers prepared for takeoff. , Satellite and radar systems were able to confirm that the attack was a false alarm within six to seven minutes of the initial response. I worked with someone who was on one of those bombers. He said they were fueled the bombs were armed, they had their orders and targets and they were at the end of the runway waiting for clearance to take off. In November of 1983 NATO ran a military exercise named Able Archer 83. The exercise was a simulation of a conventional war that escalated to nuclear. The Soviets believed it to be a ruse to cover an actual first strike by NATO. Nuclear forces were elevated to DEFCON 1. In response, Soviet nuclear capable aircraft were fueled and armed ready to launch on the runway, and ICBMs were brought up to alert. When the exercise ended the Soviets stood down. The other major nuclear accident that didn't involve a nuclear exchange but possibly a detonation on US soil was the Titan II missile explosion in Damascus Arkansas. Not a lot of people know about it but there was an American Experience done called Command and Control. My wife lived 10 miles from the missile silo where it exploded. It threw the 9 megaton warhead out of the silo and they couldn't find it at first. My wife said they were ordered to stay inside for 3 days.
