The Doctor comes face to face with himself! Sort of. This was a BIG swing and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a really weird bit of teasing the audience. By now it was publicly known that Tennant was leaving the show, so when the ads for this one started, the natural assumption was that David Morrisey really would be the Eleventh Doctor. And that was a pretty exciting idea, since the show had several times of the Doctor meeting previous versions of himself, but never a future one, and Morrisey’s a great actor who everyone knew could do well in the role. So a lot of fans felt quite let down when it turned out to all be a trick, with many saying Jackson Lake was way less interesting than when he thought he was the Doctor and dragged down the second half. RTD himself also quickly came to regret how he’d written the ending, coming up with what he considered a much better one where Miss Hartigan redeems herself rather than resolving the problem with an extremely forced Dalek plot mcguffin (and it REALLY doesn’t help that the actress does such a silly hammy scream, which some fans have called the single most unintentionally funny moment of Tennant’s time on the show).

I'm looking forward to watching this with you! I've been sad to know that you are aware of who the next doctor will be, since this episode fooled me for the first half until it was revealed. He truly would have made a fun doctor. Well, he actually was.

Agreed on the sentiment - I thought this was going to be the passing of the torch episode. But Chris has hinted that we *owe* the next Doctor--or at least one of the next Doctor's companions--for Chris bothering to watch Doctor Who at all, so I can't be too mad.

Watching it now I remember my one disappointment with this fun episode. I really felt Jackson should have been the one to finally ride his Tardis up and defeat the Cyber King, perhaps in a noble sacrifice or in a glorious triumph. Great reaction, thanks! I think you missed a brief powerful character moment when your sister left (good enough reason for sure) but I hope you caught it on editing.

I just knew they would use this episode to fakeout the audience. I read some reviews of the episode after I watched it and was surprised to see people enjoyed it less than I did, but it was clear their expectations of him being the next doctor heavily influenced how some viewed episode.

Yea, I knew who most of the modern doctors were long before I ever thought about watching the show. I'm not totally sure how people can go without that knowledge. I think even if I hadn't known my reaction wouldn't have been much different than it was here. I don't know the individual who played "the next doctor" so I'm not sure I would have ever actually thought he was really the next doctor. Especially since I do know from my bluray collection that this batch of specials are the "David Tennant Specials". It's so interesting how different knowledge levels can affect your experience.

Oh I caught it in editing and was so sad (because of that moment and because I missed it!) I would have actually paused it or waited to watch if I'd known she was leaving. I would have liked Jackson to have a triumphant moment in his tardis to, but I don't think he should have left his son's side so the plot would have to be reworked in some way.
