Aloha Patrons!

Hope you all are well!  I've just returned from China tour - if you'd like to catch up on my tour diary, please visit my instagram (@cynthialinmusic).  It was an eye-opening and exhausting 2 weeks, and now I'm gearing up for SF Uke-tober Fest.  Look forward to seeing many Patrons there!

Thanks for voting in our October song poll - the winner is California Dreamin' by just one vote!  I've included my class video for California Dreamin' above because the original recording by the Mamas and the Papas was actually recorded out of tune, so it's really hard to play-along with.

You can join me online to learn this song in our October 2018 Live Lesson this Thursday at 4:30PM Pacific Time ($5+ Patrons) or get early access to the chord chart ($3+ Patrons).

For each of our monthly song vote winners, I teach a Live Lesson for $5+ Patrons and post a Patron-only chord chart for $3+ Patrons.  I then create a Patron-supported Play-Along to share on YouTube.  Here's a playlist of recent Patron-supported Play-Along videos.  All Patrons will get access to the recorded Lesson once the Play-Along and Chord Chart are published.  Click here to find all available Live Lessons.

If you'd like to change your pledge and join us for the Live Lesson, click here for help on editing your pledge.

Thanks!

xo cynthia.

California Dreamin' with my Intermediate Uke class

Here's my September 2016 Intermediate Uke class performing California Dreamin'. Featuring Susan, Steve, Debbie, Deborah, Kelvin, Hayden, Joseph, Julie, Nicole, Nef, and Erica (and Ankit, Steve, Roque, and Richard in spirit - plus Athena dancing in the background!). This was our first time playing separate parts, and I'm thrilled with how it turned out! Please like and comment and give the class some love! California Dreamin' has layered vocals, a complicated strum, and the 2 overlapping fingerpicked intro parts. The main challenges were the timing of the intro, clean chord changes, and learning to sing with the strum. We worked on this song over the course of our 6-week session (as well as working on other songs each week). Like it or not Sylvia, these Are the official lyrics as written by John and Michelle Phillips. While I can appreciate that putting a little 'spin' on the lyrics might make it a bit more meaningful, and poignant for you personally, they are what they are. You might enjoy a visit to Songfacts, which gives a more complete background on the song. Here is a little something copied from the site. "One of the more misheard lyrics comes in the second verse of this song, as "You know the preacher likes the cold" is often mistaken as "the preacher lights the coals." So as you can see, there are many who have taken a different meaning to the song. Have a Great day, Cheers!

Welcome back Cynthia! I Know you must have knocked 'em out when they saw you in concert! For selfish reasons though, we're glad you're back with us. Thanks for making us better ukulele players, it IS appreciated.

Joshua Green

Thanks for making this arrangement. I am curious if Cynthia avoids the original key to avoid the dreaded E chord, to make it more singable for her voice range, to better suit the uke, or some other reason. I get a lot from trying to understand the choices behind how folks arrange their versions.

Marion Tindall

I LOVE this arrangement! I can play along with you all... just awesome. 🎧🎸

I want to vote for 2 songs next month, is this the right place to do it? Hawaiian Lullaby and Sweet Caroline
